Days became weeks, weeks became months, and I soon learned the ways of my new surroundings. Or, so I thought. The things in the trees were radioactive fruit, which explained the glow. The weird lizards were actually mutated frogs. The blue jays don't shoot any regular acid, but stomach acid, which is capable of melting cement. The rats' fur acted like a hedge hogs', which explains why it was so spiky. The bugs had doubled their size and strengthened their armour, so the spiders' webs evolved into a thicker material. Yes, some of the guide books helped me figure these things out. I had also captured some creatures and studied them, documenting them as I learned more and more about them. So I guess things were going alright.
One day, out of my stupidity, I left to scavenge and forgot to close the shelter doors. I searched for at least four hours, and when I came back, I finally saw my mistake. I quickly ran into the shelter, stopping suddenly half way down the steps when I saw a strange zyrite. If you had no idea, which you probably didn't, we call 'statues'--or whatever--'zyrites'.
"Uh... What the heck?" I slowly stepped the rest of the way down the stairs, holding on to the straps of my backpack.
Out of nowhere, the zyrite's head jerked to face me, then it began to stomp over. I bolted, not even thinking about anything, and ran as fast as I could. Zyrites came out from behind buildings, all of them brightly colored. None of them had eyes, so I had no idea how they saw me. My heart pounded as I ran away from the only place that could protect me, knowing that it was too infested with those mutants to ever return. I ran deeper into the woods, refusing to stop myself. The fruits in the trees glowed and twinkled like stars, lighting the way as it got darker.
I ran into a lot of wildlife, too. All of which were mutated, of course. I didn't have much time to look at them, though.
I could only run.
