I was going to be travelling with Gideon. The mere thought made my nerves rear up and I frowned in annoyance. I understood Greyson wanted me to have some sort of protection while amongst our enemies, but couldn't he find anyone... besides his brother?
Sighing, I made my way up to my room and gathered some clothes, toiletries and other necessities for my upcoming trip. I would be leaving tomorrow just after the warriors departed.
Greyson had given me the task of tracking Gideon down to tell him that he was to come with me to find the witches tomorrow. With a deep breath I mustered up my nerve and headed back downstairs to find the elusive wolf himself.
Passing by some pack members, I slowed down. "Have any of you seen Gideon around?"
They immediately straightened and shook their heads. "I last saw him early this evening on our patrol run." One offered up, looking bashful.
I nodded, giving him a smile. "Thanks." They gave me a quick, awkward bow as I continued on my way, heading for the front door. I smiled awkwardly at them as I headed outside. I guessed my best bet was to start out in the forest.
The weather had turned nasty as the storm I had sensed earlier finally rolled in overhead. There was bound to be thunder as I gingerly stepped from the gravel path onto the mossy ground of the darkening forest.
If this were a horror movie, I'd be the stupid girl running straight towards the bad guy into the dark sinister forest.
I cringed at the thought as I tried to scent the most recent trail of Gideon. It was nearly impossible in human form with all of the different wolves nearby.
Groaning, I slowly stripped off my clothes, making sure no one was nearby as I stashed them under a tree. I then shifted effortlessly, scenting the air again in my wolf form.
He was nearby. The trees were shaking in the gusting wind, sending eerie howling noises through the trees. I shivered, my ears perking up when I picked up Gideon's faint scent in the storm.
I headed in that direction reluctantly. When someone trekked out this far into the forest, it was doubtful they wanted any company. Regardless, we had an important mission tomorrow and he needed to be interrupted, whatever it was that he was doing.
As his trail got stronger, I found myself near a beautiful lake surrounded by weeping willow trees. Even in the stormy weather, the area looked magical. And who knows- maybe it was.
I found him in wolf form, curled up underneath a nearby tree. I watched him silently for a moment before I noticed there were little grave markings under the tree beside him.
Three of them in total.
Still in wolf form, I gave a small whine to let him know I was there. The last thing I wanted to do was sneak up on him and get attacked in response.
His ears twitched and his head slowly turned to face me, meeting my eyes. His eyes looked sorrowful and it made my heart ache. He gave a small wag of his tail, showing me that it was okay to come closer. In our culture, when someone was mourning, even the Alphas were supposed to give them space.
But who was he mourning?
I trodded slowly towards him, my tail down, showing him that I meant no harm. He gave a low whine, before standing up and shaking off his coat. He shifted, suddenly naked in front of me.
If I had been in human form, I would have blushed. My pack was definitely more modest.
When he saw that I had no interest in shifting forms, he gave a low laugh.
