Gideon and I sat awkwardly on the floral love seat in Agatha's dark and dreary home. The colourful couch was just about the only thing somewhat happy within these walls. I was half expecting a big, hairy spider to crawl across my thigh. It was that stereotypical.
I shivered, shaking off the thought as we watched people stream quietly through the doors.
More people than I had been expecting, to be honest. There were about fifty people in the house when Agatha called us in to the kitchen.
"Everyone," Agatha's voice cut through the noise of the crowd, "please welcome our newest coven member, Halle."
I turned red. I had never been a fan of attention, yet here we were. I had been expecting angry, judgmental faces but instead... I was being met with warmth. Despite the open friendliness, there was no forgetting the fact that these very people also willingly decided to curse an entire species and sentence them to a painful death.
Was it the entire coven that made that decision? Probably not, but either way... I was no fan of theirs. My narrowed eyes took in the crowd in front of me.
I was sure that if I was still part wolf and had my abilities the friendliness in their eyes would have been replaced by something else.
Agatha scuttled towards me sporting a disturbing expression of adoration on her face. I cringed away from her when she gripped my cheeks in her hands. Her mere touch repulsed me.
"Oh, Halle. I've waited many years for this moment." My heart sped up at her words; she almost sounded sincere. I wanted to pinch myself. This woman was anything but sincere.
Agatha turned once more to the excited crowd in front of her, gesturing excitedly with her arms open wide. "We are here to welcome and complete the ceremony that will ensure Halle Brynn is able to take her rightful place next to-"
Someone in the crowd gave a loud cough, which caused Agatha to lose her train of thought.
She glared in the direction of the cough, then carried on. "Which will enable her to be a participating member of this coven. Her lineage is now pure," Her voice seemed to sneer, "and dates back many millennia, all the way back to the founding witches."
There were some shocked murmurs within the large mass of people. I wanted to both roll my eyes and rip Agatha's wrinkled hands off of me, especially after gloating once again that she had successfully gotten rid of my werewolf abilities. She knew how to get under my skin like no other on this planet. Well... except maybe for Greyson.
And that was in a different way. My cheeks blushed brightly.
"Yes, I know. Very exciting," Agatha seemed to agree with what she was saying. I furrowed my brow at her strange behaviour.
Why is she so excited about this? My mind whirled with confusion.
"Follow us to the circle." Agatha announced, dragging me towards a door that had just appeared in front of us. I opened my mouth to protest, but she paid no attention to me.
She yanked me through what I assumed was a portal and when we reappeared on the other side, I bent over as I braced my hands on my knees. I was practically wheezing as my body tried to readjust to the world around me. The magic door had made me feel like I was about to throw up my last meal.
Agatha and a few others that had already made it through to witness my weakness chuckled lightly to themselves. I wasn't feeling quite sick enough that I couldn't manage a earth stopping glare in their direction, which made them look away sheepishly.
