This isn't the movies.
A sentiment echoed in the very empty first floor of the condo complex.
It was Jessie's turn to zombie walk. She used her smartphone to order a taxi. Doing something would help keep the welling tears from spilling as they lingered at the precipice. She could keep everything together just a bit longer; if only she could get some fresh air.
Jessie pressed send on the cab request by the time she reached the front glass door. A great time to look up. She pushed at it blindly.
However, the door opened before she touched it.
Instead, a towering grey shirt of a wall pushed backward making her twist out of the way. Her high heels lost grip on the smooth tiles causing her to crash hip first into the newly polished floor.
"Woah. Hold up, Jake." A deep voice echoed in the empty floor. "Put it down." Referring to the all-black modern sofa positioned half-way through the door.
Rubbing her hip, Jessie looked up. Grey shirt wasn't just a tower. Mystery guy was a massive umber skyscraper of height. Wearing gym clothes, the light heather grey t-shirt pinned against his previously straining biceps and wide shoulders. His thin dark grey workout shorts accentuated his bubble butt while simultaneously showing off his dark tree trunk calves. A picture she only noticed due to the location of where she landed.
On the other side of the couch, a blonde "pretty boy" with a slim runner's body, but her attention swung back over to Grey Shirt. His deep hickory brown eyes peered at her with concern.
"You alright?" He offered a perfectly manicured hand to her. "Sorry 'bout that. I didn't see ya there." He lifted her to her feet like she weighed nothing. She rubbed her hip as it throbbed. It would probably bruise if it wasn't already.
Her own eyes dropped to her ensure she didn't have a wardrobe malfunction. Once satisfied, she kept them away from anyone- not being in the mood for peopling right now. She just wanted to get home and disappear in her comforter.
"You sure?" Grey Shirt asked.
Those words somehow became the password to open the dam. The tears that Jessie fought so hard to keep contained began percolating. He saw. Her lips quivered.
He knew. He didn't know her, but he already knew. She was pathetic.
He probably thought she was a hot mess.
She was a hot mess.
They would have a good laugh later.
This thought only made her panic.
She was pathetic- an embarrassment. She backed away to hide her shame.
"Shit! I didn't hurt you, did I?" He asked.
"Dude, I told you to slow down," The other guy he called Jake said with no pity. She didn't look towards the other guy. He didn't need to know.
Go away. Ignore me- Let me pass. Jessie pleaded in her head.
He didn't. "I'm so sorry. Do you live here? Can I get someone for you?" Grey Shirt paused. "How about a beer to say I'm sorry. The apartment is a mess since I'm moving in, but this is the last big item. You are welcome to join us for a victory beer. I have an ice pack if you need it." He said in rapid succession not letting her reply.
But when he positioned himself in front of her touching her arm, she flinched away.
You are stronger than this. Jessie said to herself. Then to him, "No thanks. If I could get past, you are blocking the door."
His eyes went wide. "Oh. Sorry." He grabbed his side of the sofa.
"Finally." Jake's voice uttered.
They pulled it the rest of the way through the door. She noted the blonde on the other side winked at her as she scooted past. She ignored them both to get outside.
However, she was close enough to hear Jake pick on his friend as he didn't wait until the door shut before speaking. "Dude, she totally rejected your sorry ass."
"Fuck you, fucker." Grey Shirt's voice boomed on the empty floor, but she heard a hint of amusement in his voice.
"You promise?" Jake laughed.
'Did she hear that right?'
She looked back at them through the glass door which was now fully shut. They were wrestling while waiting for the elevator door to open. Grey shirt had Jake's blonde curls in a vice grip in his massive arms. They were both laughing.
When the elevator doors opened, they hurried to bring the couch in the oversized lift. His eyes found hers through the tiny crack of the closing doors leaving her with the memory of his BBQ sauce eyes.
Cocky Ass. She thought and huffed.
