Anna's POV

The bell chimes as I walk through the entrance of the sweet, cozy cafe.

"Hi, Oscar."

"Anna, you greet me nicely for once," he stands up, rolling his eyes and motions me to sit down opposite him. "So, how are you?"

"Good thanks," I smile, "you?"

He nods, asking me what I've been up to this weekend.

After five minutes of easy conversation, a young woman comes up to us - "what can I get you, Oscar and-"

"Anna," I smile at the blonde waitress. "You know Oscar?" I can't help myself.

"My Mum owns this cafe," Oscar admits.

"Oh, wow," I say surprised. "It's lovely," the walls and furniture are all pale pastel colours with pictures of tea cups making it a very cheerful cafe to be in.

"So, what do you want? My treat," Oscar points to the menu.

"I'll have the avocado and eggs on toast please."

"Great choice," Melanie grins and I return a smile.

"Pancakes with maple syrup for me, thanks Melanie," Oscar tells her and then she goes, saying it won't be long.

"So, your family owns this cafe then?" I sip some of my orange juice that Oscar already took the liberty of ordering before I got here.

"Yes, my mum does. My dad's in the military, he comes home on leave when he can, but that is not often," his eyes turn slightly sad as he reveals his father's occupation.

"I can't say I know what that's like but I'm sorry to hear that. It sounds like you and your dad are close."

"Yes, we are. Our family is close. I have an older sister too, Bea, who's away at college, but she comes home once a month and I talk on the phone to Dad so it's not too bad," he shrugs. "What do your parents do?"

"My Mum is a nurse. My um, Dad was a builder slash contractor, he had his own company and everything," I say, it's my turn to feel nostalgia.

"You say it in the past tense?" He quietly probes.

"He died, when I was nine," I looking down.

"Anna, I'm so sorry to hear that," I take the risk at looking up and he grabs my hand, squeezing it and looks genuinely concerned.

"Thanks, it's okay. Well it's not, and it never will be, but time is a miraculous healer. My mum remarried last year to Steve. Steve is great, he's the reason me and my blood brothers moved to this city. Although I didn't like it here much at the start; I'm glad we moved; it's offered me a fresh perspective on life," I admit.

"I'm glad," he grins. "How many siblings do you have?"

"Two blood brothers and two step brothers," I sigh and Oscar whistles at this news.

Our brunch comes and me and Oscar both dig in hungrily, not leaving much room for conversation.

"Maybe we could do this again sometime?" I boldly suggest after breakfast is finished.

"Definitely, I would love to Anna," he smiles, a real smile, not one of his infamous smirks.

"Anna, you had alcohol?"

"Morning Mum," I yawn, pouring myself some tea from the steaming teapot on the counter.

"Anna, you had alcohol?"

"Yes, sorry, only a sip. You see it was truth or dare," I smile at her apologetically. "And you know how a group of teenage girls are," I play the 'Anna Has Friends Card'
which always works with Mum.
