Anna's POV"Stop! What do you mean Mum's in hospital? What's wrong?" I panic, grabbing Brett's arm, making him stop.
"I don't know!" He shouts rubbing his hair in fustration.
I take a few steps back.
"I'm sorry, but we need to go now," he grabs my hand and leads me out.
My heart is thumping fast, and I feel tears coming, but I try not to well up. My mum, my beautiful num, my rock is in hospital and I don't know why.
"Where are the others?" I mumble.
"They're meeting us at the car."
Louis, Adam and Logan are already at Louis' car parked in the back of the school car park when me and Brett get there.
Adam wraps his arms around me, reassuring me everything will be okay.
"How can you be so sure? We know nothing!" I choke, breathing in his cologne.
"Guys let's go," I hear Louis say.
Adam sighs and opens the back door for me, and I slide in silently feeling the door shut behind me. Logan sits in the middle with Adam the other side while the twins jump in the front.
I ignore their sombre and short, sharp conversations, instead focusing on the landscape whizzing by us. The weather even darkens and starts to rain, the temperature noticeably drops, everything feels cold. No one seems to know quite what to say, not even Louis.
The catalyst of the household, the one who makes everything run smoothly, laundry is always in clean piles waiting at the bottom of your bed; food is always plentiful and cooked to perfection, the house always seems clean and organised. Mum is always there, she helps me with everything. I need her. We may not have always seen eye to eye, but our relationship is solid and we've been through a lot undoubtedly but we are stronger because of it. And it kills me inside that she's in hospital and I can't do anything to help her, hell, I don't even know why she is there. And that annoys me.
The journey seems to take forever, I grow impatient that potentially precious time is slipping away at an exponential rate.
"How much longer?" I say into the empty silence.
"Ten minutes," Louis checks his watch in the passenger seat.
"Are you gonna tell me anything, like why she's there, why now? What even happened?" I can't help myself, raising my voice.
"Anna, we don't know anymore than you do. Steve just rang me and told me Mum is in the emergency room and we need to get here," Brett says bluntly.
"Are you sure? You've kept stuff from me before, claiming I was "too young to handle it" - she's my mum! I deserve to know Brett!" I cross my arms angrily.
I don't know what's got over me, but I don't care. My mum is in hospital. I've already lost my dad, I cannot loose her under any circumstances.
I am always the last to know, in this family, I swear.
"Anna, I'm driving. Don't **** me off now," Brett sternly replies.
"But-"
"Anna, look at me," Adam raises his voice and I look at him, "we promise we know nothing more than you do."
I nod slightly as I look into his warm and earnest brown eyes, he's telling me the truth.
"Anna we get this is especially hard for you, but it's hard for all of us, okay? We just need to stay calm until we know what we're dealing with," Louis turns round in his seat.
