I smiled contently as I sat with my husband’s arm around me. I took a lick of my chocolate death ice-cream, humming at the taste. It was the next morning and Alec decided that he wanted to get out of the institute. Inquisitor Herondale was taking over everywhere and he finally had enough. Now here we are, sitting in a park and both eating an ice-cream that we bought from a food-truck.“This is nice.” I commented, before taking another lick of ice-cream.
“It is. We should do it more often.” He said and I snorted. Like we’d get the time. Well, I would. Alec wouldn’t because he’s the head of the Institute. “What?”
“You’d never have the time. Between running the institute and going on missions, there wouldn’t be time.” I told him. This was one part about being a shadowhunter I didn’t like. Our time was never our own. Not really.
“Excuse me?” A voice called from beside us, making both Alec and I tense. I turned to see two girls, they couldn’t be older that fifteen or sixteen. A brunette and a one with raven hair. May the angel help them if they are about to hit on my husband.
“Yes?” Alec asked the girls, as I raised my eyebrows.
It was the brunette who spoke, “We just wanted to say that you two look so amazing together.” I immediately relaxed and gave the girl a small smile.
“Thanks.” I told them and they giggled in unison before turning around and walking away.
“That was weird.” Alec noted and I shrugged.
“Compared to our usual lives?” I asked and he chuckled.
“Fair point.” We were quiet for another while when my phone rang. I smiled fondly at the screen when I saw it is Izzie calling. Then I frowned, she knows Alec and I are taking the afternoon of, so why would she call unless it is important. With that concerning thought in mind, I picked up. I didn’t even get a word in before she started speaking.
“Sam, he took Jace. We were just checking out a werewolf death and he ambushed us. I fought off his men, but at the time I was done, he was gone. And he took Jace with him.” My blood ran cold and I felt the ice-cream slip from my fingers. Alec immediately became alert and I put the phone on speaker phone. Even though I had an exact idea of who took my older brother, I still hoped to the angel that I was wrong.
“Who took Jace, Iz?” I whispered, my voice small and fragile. My husband’s face filled with pain and fear when he realized that Isabelle’s call to me was not a social one. It was one that would bring pain to all of us.
“Jonathan.” She breathed and I closed my eyes as tears started to brim on my eye banks. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself before opening my eyes again. It didn’t work. In Shadowhunter School, they teach us that feelings are nothing more than a distraction. And right now, I am thinking that they are onto something, because right now I’m not thinking about the proper procedure to go after the Demonic Morgenstern. All I am thinking about is getting my brother back and getting rid of that monster, once and for all.
“Sammy?” My sister-in-law called, but I didn’t answer her. Alec took the phone out of my hands and they talked to each other, but I didn’t listen. All I saw was Jace, lying somewhere, in pain. And Jonathan hurting him with that sick grin on his face.
Arms wrapped around me and from the comforting sparks that shot through my arms, I knew it was my husband. I didn’t even need that, I knew he was right by my side. “Babe, I know you’re hurting. Don’t bother denying it, I can feel your pain in my heart, through the runes on our hearts. I am going to ask you something and I need to do it.”
