Earth the beginning of the fall

Chapter 22

   "Okay everyone my I have your attention" the low murmur of the room went completely silent all eyes were now focused on Kurt, he had waited until Mitch and the others had finished handing out what little flashlights they had found throughout the station, it wasn't nearly enough but it would have to do.

   "By now I'm sure everyone is aware of the creatures outside however I'm not sure if you are aware of their potential weakness towards the light, now based on earlier observation the lights effect only works in assisting to do damage for example shooting them without light is like shooting a armored vehicle your bullets do no damage but if you should shine light upon them and shoot on the spot the light touches your bullet goes straight in causing damage"

   "Why's that?" Someone Asked "don't know, I'm only aware of this because my officer and I took one down while escaping from over a dozen of those beasts." "Beast" Mason said looking at Kurt "Yes beast their different from the spiders here in town" murmurs went up around the room as the fear settled in with the knowledge of not one but two potential threats.

   "Does the light work on the spiders too?, "where are the beast now?, "what happens if there both outside then what do we do?" The questions came rapidly Kurt held both hands up to stem the flow and quiet the room, it took awhile but the room got silent again. "It's a possibility they may already be outside, I don't know if the lights carry the same effect on the spiders, but what I do know is we can't stay here while every minute that passes more and more of them gather outside, the longer we stay here the less chance we have of actually escaping."

He paused his speech and looked around making eye contact with has many of the people he could, no one said anything so he continued "right, so here's what we're going to do I need two people in each group as designated flashlight holders, the other three will cover the rest on their way to a car or truck, get it started and get in quickly, we'll do this one group at a time so the rest of us can give your group cover fire as well. Starting with the groups with children you guys will go first."

    The room was extremely quiet as people glanced around at each other, Curt realized he may have to choose a group if no one chose to go first, just as he was about to do so a man spoke from the left side of the room, Kurt recognized him has one of the persons Mason was talking to earlier "we want to go first" he said the others nodded behind him and the woman to his right held the three small children tighter against her body.

"Ok, Kurt said giving the man a nod then addressing the others in the room, those who are confident in their ability to aim will be in the front with me to provide cover, ok let's get this show on the road" turning he walked out the lobby heading for the front doors, all four groups trailing closely behind.

Kurt watches has Mason and some others including the hairdresser down the street pull apart the barricade at the entrance, accepting a shotgun from Mitch with some extra bullets he drops them in his shirt pocket, and steps foreword through the broken glass door both hands on his shotgun. The sound of crunching glass was loud in his ears has he walked towards the first of the five large stairs leading up to the stations doors. Mitch and Mason followed behind with three others spreading out on both sides to provide cover.

    The streets were deadly quiet, small ash flakes floating in the wind covered almost everything, the smell of smoke was strong a sign that the fires were getting closer. Looking pass the perimeter the floodlights created, Kurt checked each building thoroughly with his eyes. "I don't see anything" Mitch whispers "do any of you see anything" a collective of whispered "no" was the answer from everyone.

    Kurt looked back over his shoulder and waved the group foreword, they walked through the broken glass door being careful not to cut themselves on the jagged pieces "quickly and quietly" Kurt whispered and watches has they hurried down the stairs and to the first car. Has the doors close behind them Kurt releases a breath of relief, looking back Kurt waved to the second group this one sported two teens and three small kids, they moved through the doors and quickly made it to two cars, four of the kids went with two of the adults, while the rest got into the car behind theirs slamming the doors shut behind them.

   The sound echoed like the beating of a drum breaking the silence with its eerie sound. Everyone held their breaths listening. The first thing Kurt noticed was the rattling sound of the splinters on the ground at his feet, has he looks down at them another piece fell from the door crashing to the ground shattering into more pieces.

   Looking up Kurt made eye contact with Mitch and saw he had lost all color in his face "chhhh..Chief" he stutters out, with out a second thought Kurt turned back to the rest of the group shouting "get to a vehicle now!"
