Samantha's POV
I blush, turning my head down so Shawn can't see.
"Samantha, you look... stunning," he whispers. I look up at him and he smiles at me. I smile back, not being able to not.
"You look good," I tell him. His smile grows wider.
"You ready?" He asks, sticking out his hand like he did in the shoot. I smile and chuckle as I respond.
"Ready," And take his hand. We start to turn to leave and he takes my hand with his other hand and moves my hand to his arm, like people do when they walk down red carpets or like that.
••••••••••
We step out of the car that we rode in and immediately get hit with lights.
"What's happening?" I kind of whisper to myself. Shawn calmly offers his arm and I take it.
"Paparazzi," he whispers to me.
"Paparazzi?" I ask.
"Yeah, they're always here for the wrap parties. I mean, it is a party, but don't worry, they won't follow us inside. It's just to get pictures of who is in the video, along with the crew," he explains.
"Oh, okay," I stumble out.
"Hey, don't freak out. You're perfectly fine. Just smile and walk. I'm right here for you," he tells me, cheering me on. I nod slightly at him and then look forward, walking. I give them a smile, waving to some people. Fans of Shawn's.
"It's my birthday today, Shawn!" I hear someone yell from the right. Shawn hears it as well.
"Want to come with me?" He asks, looking over in the direction the scream came from.
I nod, moving with him. He stops in front of a blond, about 15. He doesn't let go of me.
"Birthday girl?" He asks her. She nods, starting to freak out. He grabs the paper she's handing him with his left hand, the one that I'm not holding, and starts signing it. I let go of him to make it easier for him and he thanks me. While he's signing it, a different girl lightly taps me. I turn around and she almost melts.
"Holy crap. You're gorgeous," she kind of just sighs. I laugh a little. She looks about 12.
"Thank you, but so are you," I tell her, smiling.
"Who are you?" someone next to her asks.
I look back at Shawn who's looking at me like, "if you want."
I turn back around to the two girls, who now have a small group that has joined, waiting for my answer.
"I'm Samantha. Shawn and I were best friends in middle school, but I'm here because I'm the other star in the music video," I tell them all.
"You're gorgeous!" They all yell at me as Shawn wraps his hand around my back, telling me we have to go.
"So are you!" I yell back as I turn around and join Shawn again.
"You're a natural," he says as we keep walking the carpet.
"Why, thank you," I smile as we pause to take a photo. Shawn wraps his arm behind my back and I step closer to him, wrapping one of my arms around his shoulder and the other resting on his chest. We both smile as cameras go off in every direction.
"Thank you," Shawn says, waving at them and then starts walking again. We fall in step with each other and we make it to the door. We step inside and immediately I take a breath in.
"It's gorgeous," I whisper to Shawn. I look around. Lights strung from the ceiling and floor, an arch filled with flowers and white decorations, vases filled with gorgeous flowers and center pieces. Everything is amazing and I can't believe I'm here, not just as Aaliyah's babysitter, but as me, Samantha.
"Ms. Simmons, Mr. Mendes, right this way."
Or as Ms. Simmons. Shawn and I follow the man as he leads us to the front table. He gestures to it and Shawn and I both nod, thanking him. We look at each other as we chuckle lightly. Shawn lets go of me and moves forward and pulls out a chair for me.
"You didn't have to do that," I tell him.
"Ah, but you're my date," he informs me.
"Alright," I let him win. I take the seat he pulled out and he helps me push it back in.
"So, who are we sitting with?" I ask Shawn as he sits next to me.
"Aaliyah came with her dancer friends so they're right next to us at a different table. We're sitting with my managers and producers, and some that just want to meet you," he tells me.
"Wait, people want to meet me?" I ask, surprised.
"Of course. They saw a raw cut of earlier footage of the video and immediately asked about you." I smile. I can't believe people want to meet me. Important people. I feel it now. This is definitely the start of something. I realize that the feeling I felt earlier this week, like I was on top of the world, doesn't compare to how I feel now. This is happening. Things are happening. For me. For my career. Plus, I get to hang out with Shawn. I sigh. Shawn looks at me, concerned.
"Are you okay? Is something wrong?"
"Nonono. I'm just really...happy," I tell him, leaning over and giving him a hug. He definitely wasn't expecting that, but I can feel him relax after the initial shock and hug me back.
"I'm happy you're happy," he tells me, smiling back.
I just smile wider in response.
"Ms. Simmons?" A voice asks.
I turn around and am met with four very important-looking people. I immediately get nervous, which Shawn feels so he grabs my hand under the table and gives it a squeeze. I can do this.
"That's me," I smile welcomely.
"I'm John, this is Elizabeth, Micheal, and Mary," he introduces himself and then the other three next to him. I stand up and shake each one of their hands.
"It's nice to meet you. Go ahead, take a seat," I welcome them to get comfortable.
"It's wonderful to meet you as well, Ms. Simmons," Elizabeth smiles at me as they all take a seat.
"Oh, call me Samantha," I insist.
"Alright then, Samantha, how do you know Shawn again?" They ask, looking over at Shawn, who has stood up once again to help me sit back in my chair.
"Thank you," I tell him, not being able to not smile. "We were best friends in middle school before his family moved to a private school. I'm actually watching Aaliyah for the summer and I came along with her, but ended up doing much more than I originally thought I would," I explain.
"Too much?" Micheal speaks up.
I look over at Shawn, who has put all of his attention on me. He's totally fine with not talking or even being the center of conversation. He's truly happy for me.
"I think it was just the right amount to get me started and excited about what's to come," I answer, trying not to sound boastful or anything.
"From what we've seen, you have a bright future, and if what we're hearing is true, you would like to keep growing in the industry?" John speaks up again.
"I would love to," I answer honestly.
"Well then, we'll have to stay in touch," John tells me, smiling.
"We will," I smile back.
••••••••••
Shawn's managers and producers came a little while later and they all congratulated Shawn and I on a very successful music video. All of them were very impressed by the quality of it and were surprised when I told them it was my first acting job.
We ate and talked about so many things.
Aaliyah.
How Shawn and I know each other, again and again. Mostly because people didn't believe that we were best friends. Shawn never mentioned me before.
He simply said it was because we hadn't seen each other in years, which was true, but there was also something else he didn't want to say.
I could tell.
We talked about my schooling. They also didn't believe I had only taken one year of college. They said I was "far too advanced" in my acting abilities for only one year.
So, I explained how many productions I had been a part of in my middle school and high school career.
52.
I know, crazy. But I was also in my community's productions every summer/ time they put one on.
Then I told them that it was plays, and musicals combined. And that's how I got in the situation I was in now.
••••••••••
"Please, please. Sing something for us," Tracy, one of Shawn's managers pleads.
"Oh no, I can't. That's Shawn's thing, plus I don't have a song that I could just go for," I try to shoo them away from the idea.
"You said you were in 'The Sound of Music,' right?" someone from a different table asks. Crap. They were listening.
"She was, but I think she just needs a little accompaniment," Shawn tells people, getting up from his seat. He holds out his hand and asks, "What do ya say? You up for it?"
I look around and see everyone is waiting for me to respond. Well, I guess I can't exactly say no now. Shawn sees the decision in my eyes and smiles. "Ready?"
I take his hand and he helps me out of the chair.
"Ready," I say as we make our way onto the small little stage, while the crowd erupts with cheers.
I think that "Ready?"
"Ready." has become Shawn and I's thing.
It's nice to have a new thing with him. It feels right.
We step up on stage and two people bring out a microphone stand for me, and a stool and a guitar for Shawn.
I guess this is happening.
Shawn takes the guitar and positions himself on the stool, preparing himself.
He looks up at me and I give him a nod.
"This is your chance. What do you want to sing?" he whispers. He's giving me a chance of a lifetime. To sing in front of many people that could help me with my future. Okay. What do I sing?
Powerful.
But not too in your face.
"Halo," I whisper to him. He smiles and nods at me. He moves back to face everyone and he starts to play.
I look out at everyone, and they're all intently watching me. I look over and Aaliyah is trying to get my attention.
"Do your thang!" She whispers up to me. I smile at her and then face back to the mic. Deep breath in, deep breath out. I close my eyes and let the soft purrs of Shawn's guitar pull me in.
Shawn's POV
I'm as excited as everyone else in the audience. I look over as she closes her eyes. I can tell she's getting overwhelmed by the music around her. I did the same thing.
"Remember those walls I built. Well, baby they're tumblin' down," she starts singing.
I don't expect it at all.
Her voice.
She never sang like this before. She's just been messing around singing.
That one day I found her singing to the radio, jumping around. It was nothing like this.
This was amazing.
I know she's lost in the music now.
The chorus comes and she starts belting it out.
She's into it, and I know it comes from her music bone in her body. She's intense, but not too intimidating. She's simply singing, but not to anyone. It's to herself. She's breaking out of a shell or something. She's preparing herself for her future.
She stops singing and I strum the last string, and there's silence.
I look up at her and she looks down at me.
"I did it!" She yells, smiling, pulling me back into reality. The screams and shouts are deafening coming from everyone. I stand up, push my guitar onto my back and go to hug her.
She hugs me back tight. "Thank you," She whispers in my ear as we hug.
"Anytime, Sammie," I tell her, smiling as we pull away. I know she's slightly embarrassed by me using her nickname in public, but she can't help but smile as everyone cheers for her.
"Thank you! Thank you! You all are too kind!" She yells as the cheering slowly quiets down.
"But now, I think it's time for Shawn to perform his song that's the reason we're all here in the first place," she says, motioning at me.
••••••••••
Samantha's POV
Everyone is cheering and clapping for Shawn as he finishes singing.
Me, obviously, cheering the loudest.
I honestly didn't really know his full capacity at singing really at all.
He blew me away.
He is absolutely incredible.
"Yes Shawn!" I yell, which he hears and looks at me. He motions for me to come back up on the stage, I try to protest, but it's no use. He takes the few steps to me and takes my hand, and walks me back on stage.
The cheers get louder. I laugh nervously because I really wasn't that great.
Shawn motions for me to bow, so I curtsy, and then I motion back to him, and he bows as well.
"Thank you!" I yell out one last time and Shawn helps me back down the steps to our table. The cheering grows quieter and everyone quiets fully down as Sandra steps out on stage.
"All right, all right," she says, quieting the last few people down. "That was quite amazing. I didn't even know she could sing like that!" she jokes as everyone chuckles. "Well, I'm really glad everyone was able to come out and join the celebration with Shawn and the team. I want to thank Samantha for being so willing to step in and step up when I needed her to," she pauses and everyone claps for me. I smile, ducking my head as I feel my cheeks blush. "We are very proud of this project, and after looking over footage and everything from the past few days, we are officially closing filming. We plan on releasing 'There's Nothing Holding Me Back' next Monday at 3pm, eastern time," she pauses again as the guests clap and celebrate. "Again, thank you for coming and we wish you all safe travels," she finishes, kissing her hand and waving to everyone. Everyone starts clapping again and before anyone starts to move, Shawn leans over and whispers in my ear, "are you ready to leave?" As I listen to his question, I realize how exhausted I am. It's been a really long day.
"So ready," I whisper back, sighing.
"Give me five minutes. Go say goodbye to Elizabeth, Micheal, John, Mary and Tracy and then meet me at the door," he tells me, then gets up. I watch him leave and realize he's doing the same thing. Saying goodbye to his team.
I have to say goodbye, otherwise I could give off a really bad impression. I stand up, stretching myself up, tall, proud, and confident, and make my way over to the small posse of people I need to say goodbye to.
I make my way over and they see me before I say anything.
"Samantha! You were absolutely incredible!" Tracy gushes. "I knew you needed to belt it out."
I laugh lightly. "Why, thank you. That means so much. I really didn't want to take away from Shawn's night."
"Trust me, darlin'. He wanted you to sing as much as all of us, probably even more than all of us combined," John jokes to the small group.
I laugh with them.
"It was really nice meeting all of you," I smile at them, shaking all of their hands.
"It was really nice meeting you as well, Samantha. I hope that we'll be in touch very soon in the future," Micheal tells me, and they all agree.
"I hope so as well," I smile as I wave to them, walking away. I get to the door and wait.
"I knew you could do more than just act," a familiar voice from behind me says.
"And I thought I was going to be able to sit with you tonight, but I guess we all are surprised," I smile as I turn around to greet Aaliyah.
"You leaving?" She asks, noticing my position by the door.
"Yeah," I sigh, "I'm totally exhausted and so ready to just go and sleep."
"I get it. But, just to let you know, he'll probably ask to go get ice cream," she tells me, and then walks away, just as Shawn comes over.
"Ready?"
"Ready," I smile, taking his arm.
He opens the door for me and we walk out together. Screams greet me.
But not flashes.
I guess the photographers decided to head out early.
"You didn't tell us you could sing!" A girl screams out.
"If you don't know Shawn can sing by now, then I think we need to talk," I joke.
"No, you!" Someone else yells.
"Yeah!"
"Why didn't you say something?"
"You're amazing!"
"Can you do a duet?"
I turn towards Shawn.
"How do they know I can sing?" I ask, not breaking my smile.
"I have no idea," he whispers back. I go up to the girl who I was talking to earlier.
"Why is everyone asking about me singing?"
"It's all over the internet," she tells me, pulling up something on her phone. I wait, Shawn right next to me, for her to show me what she means.
The girl turns around her phone, and there it is.
There I am.
It's me, with Shawn playing guitar, singing 'Halo.' I have no idea who took the video or how it got out that fast, but from what I know. I sang that just over 45 minutes ago, and this crowd already has seen it.
It's everywhere.
"Thank you," I tell the girl and start walking. Shawn steps right in stride with me, moving his right hand to my back. I immediately feel it and calm down a little.
This isn't bad, Samantha.
You're out there now.
This is good for you. Mike opens the door for us and Shawn gets in, sliding over so I don't have to.
I climb in and Mike shuts the door behind me.
Before I can say anything, Shawn speaks up in his cute, gentle way.
"So you like ice cream?" He asks with a smile.
Aaliyah was right.
••••••••••
She was right, but we didn't go out for it. We had Jason go get it for us, and then we went back to our hotel. I changed out of my dress while he changed out of his suit.
He came back to my room after that with the ice cream. Having this nice of a hotel room, it comes with a living room, which is where we sat.
On the couch, with our ice cream, watching a movie.
Tangled, actually.
And after the movie ended, we still sat, except we talked.
"Are people gonna recognize me now?" I ask.
"Some, yes. But you should still have plenty of privacy," he answers me honestly.
"I have to go home tomorrow, don't I?" I ask, sighing.
"Yeah... and I have to go back on tour," he sighs with me.
"Oh yeah! I almost forgot that was going on! Wait, you are gonna be home for your sister's birthday, right?" I ask nervously.
"Of course. I made sure there wasn't a show scheduled for next Friday," he tells me like I'm crazy.
"I just wanted to make sure," I inform him.
"But I can't say the same thing about my birthday. I tried to get close to home, but I'm in Washington that day," he sighs.
"Does that really suck?" I ask, genuinely curious.
"No, not really. But I do wish I could be with my parents and Aaliyah for my 20th," he shrugs. "It's all right, though. I'll get plenty of birthday gifts from fans that day. They'll know it's my birthday," he smiles.
"Tracy and my other managers want me to write a 'deluxe' album. Like, one with all the songs I released, but then some that I recently wrote. Like, three to five new ones. So, I have to try and write some. I already have a few that didn't make it on the original album, but I still have to write some more."
"That's cool!" I get excited.
"Write something new and sing it for the first time for your birthday show. That would be pretty cool," I suggest.
"Yeah, that sounds nice. Thanks, Samantha," Shawn smiles at me.
"Anytime, Shawny," I use his nickname like he used mine earlier at the party. We both laugh.
And then I look up at him and he looks down at me, and I just feel... happy. Like genuinely happy. Content. Filled. Like, my soul was full and it was smiling.
