Samantha POV (One Month Later)
A ton of things have happened since I left the Late Late Show.
Elizabeth is now my full-time manager. Wow. That's super weird to say.
James Corden has contacted me and asked if I wanted to come back to the show in the future, not as Shawn's "plus one," but as just me.
Jimmy Fallon also contacted me and asked if I would come on the show soon.
I did an Instagram live with my followers, where they asked me a bunch of questions and things to get to know me better.
And even though all this has happened and it's been constant things going on, I still feel like there's just... one thing missing. I keep feeling like this and I still haven't figured out what it is yet. But, on another note,
I have today and half of next week left of nannying Aaliyah left and then I head back to school. I'm actually pretty sad about. I definitely didn't think I was going to say that about my summer job, but Aaliyah and I have grown really close over the summer and we really enjoy hanging out and keeping each other company.
Speaking of enjoying other people's company, Shawn and I have FaceTimed a lot since I left the Late Late Show and he went back on tour. He pretty much calls me every night after one of his shows and tells me how the crowd was and how much fun he had and what songs he sang, and then I talk about Aaliyah and how much fun we had, but we both know I would rather be there with him, cheering him on or even on stage a little as well.
"We're going somewhere today," Aaliyah announces, coming back into the room.
"Oh are we?" I ask.
"Yes, and it's an overnight, so we need to stop by your house before we go," she tells me. Okay, now I'm actually confused.
"Aaliyah, what are you talking about?"
"It's a surprise. Now, please, let's get you up and go to your house to get things before we leave."
"Pleaseeeee," And with that, I surrender and get up.
We get in her parents car, Aaliyah throws a night bag in the back and we start to my house.
We get there pretty quickly.
"You don't have to come in if you don't want to or if you feel uncomfortable," I let her know.
"No, I want to see where you live," Aaliyah happily responds.
"Alrighty then," I kind of whisper and we both get out of the car. As soon as I open the door, Nellie is there to greet me.
"Wait, you have a dog?" Aaliyah kind of squeals. Crap.
"Wait, are you allergic to dogs too?" I ask, referring to Shawn.
"No, I love them but I've never gotten one because of Shawn," she says all sad.
"Well, in that case. Aaliyah, meet Nellie. Nellie, this is Aaliyah," I introduce them to each other so Aaliyah knows her name.
"Nellie, it's very nice to meet you!" She squats down to pet her. I smile down at them. I had no idea she loved or even liked dogs.
I hear my mom's footsteps coming as she asks, "Sweetie, is that you? You're home early."
"I'm not actually home, we just came by to grab a few things."
"We?" She asks confused.
Aaliyah pops back up from petting Nellie and my mom's face immediately changes into a bright smile.
"Aaliyah! It's so nice to see you!" She moves forward to give her a hug. Aaliyah gladly accepts the hug.
"It's really nice to see you too, Mrs, Simmons." Man, she's so polite. My mom waves it off like it's nothing and then hugs her again. She lets go and they both laugh.
"Well, if you two need anything, just let me know," and then she disappears back into the hall.
"Okay, let's go get the stuff," I say, turning to go up the stairs. I watch as Aaliyah looks back towards Nellie all sad. I laugh. "She's coming with us, don't worry." Her face brightens up again and I call Nellie to follow, which she does.
••••••••••
"Are you ever going to tell me where we're going?" I ask her, slightly annoyed I actually don't know what's happening while Tim drives and Aaliyah's security guard is up front with him. Aaliyah and I are in the back seat. Whenever we go out now, we have to bring them with us. I guess I'm that well known now?
"Fine. We're going to Ontario," she finally gives me something.
"If I may ask, why?" She looks up at me, and I can see she's debating telling me.
"Fine. I wanted one last hurrah with each other before you leave for college again next week," she looks down at her lap, sad.
"Aaliyah... Why didn't you tell me? This is amazing!"
"You really think so?" She asks, looking back up at me.
"Obviously! I get to spend some quality time with my friend before I have to go again! That was an awesome idea!" I lean over in the seat and give her a hug.
"We're here," Tim announces from the front seat.
"Where?" I question.
"At our hotel!" Aaliyah answers me. We pull in and quickly and quietly get up to our rooms without anyone noticing us. Tim and Steven, Aaliyah's security guard, escort us to our room and ask if we're good before going into their room next door. Aaliyah looks at her phone.
"It's already 3!"
"Is everything alright?" I ask.
"Well, we have to be ready by 5," she tells me. "Is that enough time?"
"Depends. What are we doing?" I ask her. She's still been oddly secretive. She normally tells me everything. She must really want this to be a good surprise for me.
"Ummm. Wear something cute and fun, but nothing that'll be too hot or anything because it'll be hot where we're going," she tries to describe. I don't really know what that means. "Oh just wear the outfit I put in your bag while you weren't looking," she says with a wave of her hand. She put something in my bag while I wasn't looking? I go to my bag, and sure enough, there's an outfit in the top that I did not put in.
"Smooth, sister," I laugh while pulling it out.
It's a maroon crop top with a Once Upon A Time design, from the show, and black high waisted shorts. Oh. Along with some high white converse. "Well, I do have to say it's really cute and I'm excited to wear this," I tell Aaliyah as I go to change.
When I come back out, Aaliyah's changed as well, wearing a similar-ish outfit as mine, but still different enough it's not weird.
"Nice outfit," I tell her, winking.
"Oh, thanks! I picked it out myself," she replies, laughing at the end.
"Hair up or down?" I ask, still not aware enough to know what I should do.
"Up." Cool. I tease my hair slightly to give it more volume and then put it in a high ponytail. Aaliyah helps me and crimps it slightly, giving it some waves. I help her with her hair and put it in a complicated braid, bun updo.
When I finish, Aaliyah looks in the mirror.
"This is awesome! How did I not know you could do stuff like this?" She asks astonished.
"I kind of learned myself, considering my mom can't do braids at all," I tell her.
"That's cool, but I wish you would have told me sooner, because I would've made you braid my hair almost everyday," she sighs out. We both chuckle. "Okay! Makeup!" She shifts away from our conversation. "We only have an hour left for both of us, so let's do this!" she says, finishing with making a fist, like she's empowering herself or something.
"Okay, let's go girl!"
••••••••••
Fifty minutes later and we were leaving the building to go to wherever Aaliyah had planned for us to go.
I start walking to the car, with Tim and Steven right behind us, but Aaliyah tells me no.
"Umm where are we going?" I ask, confused.
"Literally a block away. It's easier to just walk," she tells me.
"Okeyyyy," I drag it out and we start walking, falling in stride with each other.
We turn the corner and get halfway down the street before someone passes us and I see their eyes light up as the small group recognizes us.
"Oh my god! Samantha! Aaliyah!" the girl slightly squeals, her friends all smiling at us, pulling out their phones.
"Do we-" I start to ask Aaliyah, but she cuts me off, knowing exactly what I'm about to say.
"We definitely have time," she says, moving towards them, greeting them.
We take about ten minutes with them, taking pictures and talking for a little bit, and then we have to leave again. We wave goodbye as we go our separate ways. I hear squeals of excitement as we walk away.
"Are you used to it yet?" I ask Aaliyah. Her brother has been in the spotlight for four years now, and with that, so has she.
"It's still weird that people want pictures only because my brother is famous, but they always tell me why they like me, so it's also not just because of him, if that makes sense at all," she confesses, still walking.
"No, I totally get it," I agree with her. "It's crazy to think less than three months ago, I was just Samantha, college student in need of a lot of money, and now, I can do live streams and have over fifty thousand people join to watch me and ask questions that they want to know. It's.... crazy," I sigh out.
"And less than three months ago I was going to get stuck with some total stranger to spend my entire summer days with, but then I got you, and we're good friends... I mean, I'd like to think we are..." she fixes herself.
"Oh, we totally are," I tell her, smiling and leaning over to hug her.
"Okay, we're here. Steven, what door are we supposed to go through?" Aaliyah asks when we break from the hug.
"Oh, cool, where are we-" I break my sentence short when I see where we are. "You got us tickets to Shawn's birthday show?" I ask in awe.
"Do you like your surprise?" she asks, looking up at me, with her arms behind her back, nervous.
"Are you kidding? Of course I do! Aaliyah, this is amazing!" I stop and hug her again.
"I wanted to surprise him, just like he was able to come for my birthday. Luckily, it was close to home and not in Japan or something. I needed someone to go with, Steven's not the best girl talk person, and Mom and Dad couldn't go and I also thought you'd really like to see him as well," she explains.
"Aaliyah, you're the absolute best!" I happily sigh out. This is amazing! I'm so happy she thought of me.
"Right this way ladies," Steven directs us, going across the street to the giant arena.
He takes us in through a back entrance. Apparently, we aren't allowed to go through the front where all the fans are because it would be too much chaos, which I totally get. I do peek around the corner at the main door to see a HUGE line of people waiting. The concert doesn't even start until seven, but the doors do open in another hour, so it makes sense. We had to go in before the massive crowd does, that way we didn't get stopped too many times or got bamboozled with a bunch of people which I also totally understand.
We make our way to our spot and it wasn't on the floor, Tim and Steven couldn't really do their jobs if we were, but we were the closest you could be on the second tier. Like, we were above the floor, but not all the way at the top. It was close enough, I could still see the stage perfectly. I was super excited. I had never experienced a concert before. Shawn Mendes will be my first, which is also super crazy to think about. When we get to our spot, Aaliyah and I both decide to sit down, considering we were going to be on our feet a whole lot and it didn't even start for another almost two hours.
We sat awhile and just hung out. We took pictures together and by ourselves of the stage and stuff, and then we started to play two truths and a lie.
"1) I have a scar on my left thigh from falling on barbed wire when I was younger 2) my middle name is Christine and 3) I have a cousin that lives in Alaska," I tell my three things, and make sure she can't see my thigh to see if I'm lying about that one.
"Ohhhh. That's not fair. I don't really know any of that... BUT I don't think I've ever seen a scar on your thigh from when we've been together. Crap! But, I didn't think you had like any other family besides your mom," she tries to figure it out. "Okay, whatever! It's the scar. I would have seen it if you had one," she makes her final decision.
"Nope." I get up and turn around, pointing to where it is.
"Oh my gosh! How have I missed that before?" she face palms herself.
"I really don't know," I shrug, sitting back down.
"So, what's the lie?"
"My middle name. It isn't Christine. Well, it is, but it's actually Christine Hope. I have two middle names. And I do have family other than my mom. I'm not a complete loser," I explain the other two.
"I feel like that shouldn't count. You totally tricked me!" she complains about my lie. "Tim! Steven! Tell her that what she did was cheating!" she tries to get help.
"It was a lie," they both say, siding with me. I smile at them, and give both of them high fives.
"Ugh. Traitors," she slumps down. They both shrug it off.
It's Aaliyah's turn, but before she says anything, a loud girth of noise comes rushing in at once. We both look down and see a smallish crowd of people come walking in. It must be the start of the audience.
And then I notice the tags around their necks and realize it's the VIP group. They must have just got done with their QandA with Shawn. Bet that's cool. When most of them make their way in, a different door opens and another group of people come rushing in as well. I look at the clock. They're a little late to open the doors. Oh well. There's only forty five minutes left before it starts.
••••••••••
I look at my phone as I hear the screams get even louder than before.
"7pm"
It was time. Aaliyah and I help each other up and just as the lights come down, I hear screams. Except not normal screams.
"Samantha! Oh my god! It's Samantha and Aaliyah!! They're here! Look at them! They must be hanging out together!! Oh my god!! They're here for Shawn's concert!!"
They noticed us, but it's not like we expected them not to. I do the one thing that I know will make them happy. I look down at where I know it came from, found the girl with her phone pointing directly at me and wave, smiling and mouthing a "hi," because I know they won't be able to hear me anyway.
All of a sudden, the stage lifts burst on all at once at the exact same time music starts playing. You can hear Shawn singing, but no one can see him yet. I feel just on edge as most of these people. I have no idea where he is and the excitement of seeing him after all this time makes me anxiously excited. Suddenly, I can see him coming up from an elevator in the stage. The screams grow louder. I can't help but join in a little, yelling "yes Shawn!" as he comes in full view.
"What's up Ontario!!" he yells as he comes to the front of the stage. The crowd yells in response. I can't help but smile.
••••••••••
45 minute later, I was still jamming. Aaliyah, on the other hand, was pretty... on edge or something.
"Okay, Ontario. As most of you have found out, I will be releasing 'Shawn Mendes: Revisited' in two weeks. In it, I will be releasing five new songs that I have written and or didn't make it into the original album. A friend gave me this idea tonight, but since you all came tonight, and it is my birthday, I thought I would release one of those songs early and play it for you guys tonight. What do y'all think?" he asks the crowd, after finishing explaining himself. The crowd screams... very loud in response. "I guess that's a yes?"
More screams.
"Alright. This is called 'When You're Ready,'" he drops the name and then starts to play. It's a great song. It really is. But, this isn't one of the ones he told me about that didn't make the cut originally, which means, he wrote it over the past couple of months...
I turn around and see Aaliyah start to leave.
"Where are you going?" I get closer to hear and yell so she can hear me.
"Oh, you're coming with," she tells me and then starts walking away again.
I give her a confused face and she turns to me and chuckles a little.
"Did you really think we were going to come to his birthday concert and not do anything?" she scoffs.
"I'm guessing not," I whisper, following her, with Steven in front of her and Tim behind me.
We make our way around the arena and then we make our way backstage... without anyone stopping us or asking us anything. That's weird. We keep going until we take a sharp right and suddenly, we're in a kitchen. I look around and see a ton of different sweets options.
"What is going on?" I ask, not fully knowing what was going to happen, the sound of Shawn's voice still heard.
"What would he enjoy the most?" Aaliyah asks, kind of to herself but also to me.
"He loves muffins," I automatically respond. She looks at me, back to the muffins in the corner, and then back to me.
"You're totally right," she agrees with me, picking one out of the box and grabbing a candle to put in it. I'm still really confused, to be honest. Because why would we get a muffin ready like he was going to see it right now? Wait.
He's not gonna see it right now, right?
"Aaliyah, he's not gonna see that muffin right now, right?" I ask all nervous.
"You bet he is," she devilishly smiles at me, grabbing the muffin and starts to walk back out. Oh goodness. What's about to happen? She keeps walking and I nervously follow her. She stops, and I realize I can hear Shawn a whole lot clearer than a minute ago. Some guy comes up to her and hands her a mic and then sees me and gives me one as well. I try to give it back, but he walks away as soon as he hands it to me. Smart. Aaliyah is all pumped, geeked. Oh my... I hear Shawn finish a song and the crowd start cheering. Aaliyah starts walking again. I start to follow and when I turn the corner realize she's going straight onto the stage. She pauses, looking back at me, and then back tracks to get me to go with her. I give in and walk willingly with her. I can tell the moment that people see us, because the cheering grows a decimal in an instant. Shawn is surprised and involuntarily takes a step back. He doesn't know we're here yet, that is, until the fans closest to him start to yell and point behind him. In the exact instant that Shawn turns around, Aaliyah starts to talk in her mic.
"Happy birthday, Brother!" she announces into the mic and the crowd cheers for her. Shawn doesn't see me. I know it. Aaliyah goes up to him and gives him his muffin, along with a hug. The whole audience "aww's," including me. They let go of their hug and he looks behind Aaliyah and I know he sees me. His eyes go wide and he smiles all cute like he does.
"Samantha?" he questions.
"Happy Birthday, Shawn," I say, walking towards him. We hug as well and the crowd "aww's" again, maybe even louder than the first time.
"I can't believe you're here," Shawn whispers in my ear as we hug. I can't help but smile as we pull away. Seeing Shawn again makes me be able to breathe again and I feel like myself again.
"We brought the muffin out here, you have to make a wish and blow out the candle," I tell him, speaking in the mic, and almost jump at how loud my voice is.
"That seems fair," he smiles, closing his eyes for a second before opening them again and blowing the candle out.
"What ya wish for?" Aaliyah asks. The crowd cheers to show they agree.
"I don't think that's how it works," Shawn tries to say, but Aaliyah and the audience isn't having it. They start chanting to tell them the wish, and he eventually gives in.
"Okay okay. I wished that, since I haven't sang it yet and she's here now, that Samantha would sing 'Holding me Back' with me," he yells the ends, and the crowd goes wild.
"Nonono, I couldn't," I try to get out of it.
"Sa-man-tha! Sa-man-tha!" The crowd starts to cheer for me. I look out at them, down at the mic in my hand, back towards Aaliyah, and then over at Shawn. I can't say no. Can I?
"Let's do this then!" I yell, all excited. In a swift minute, Aaliyah takes the muffin back from Shawn, I get a different mic, apparently one more made to sing and everything and I'm given an earphone set, that I quickly put in my back pocket. The music starts up, and I start tapping my foot to the rhythm. Shawn starts out with the first verse and I start clapping above my head for the fans to do it with me. I join in when it gets to the chorus, just like we did in the Late Late Show. He turns his body towards me, still singing into his mic and I turn towards him, and it's like we're a real pair of performers, singing to each other on stage. The chorus ends and the second verse starts, which I take as a solo. I can't help but smile big as the crowd starts cheering for me when Shawn drops out. I start walking out to the part of the stage that goes farther into the crowd and I look to see Shawn right next to me, his guitar laying on his back, microphone in his hand. I smile at him and he smiles back at me. I feel it. I feel complete. Like, everything's perfect. Apparently, I really do like performing.
The chorus comes and he jumps right back in. We both face out towards the crowd and we sing out to them. I get on my knees, and touch hands with fans that are reaching theirs out to me. This is so weird. It's the first time this has happened to me. I can't help but keep the smile on my face. I get back up and run back to the main part of the stage with Shawn next to me as he puts his mic back on his stand and pulls his guitar back out in front of him, playing it again. We get to the bridge, and we both just go all out. It was such an incredible feeling. I can't even begin to describe the feeling the crowd, lights, noise and screams are giving me. We get to the very end and we both end together, jumping with the end of the beat. The crowd goes absolutely nuts and I just am standing there, completely amazed and thankful for what just happened. I almost feel like I could cry I was so happy. Shawn comes up next to me, grabs my hand and we bow together. He steps back and points to me, the crowd still yelling.
"Thank you all so much! This was truly amazing! I love you all! Thank you so much!" I yell into the mic so everyone could hopefully hear me over the screaming, blow them all a kiss and turn to Shawn. We hug again and this time, it was my turn to whisper something.
"Thank you so much for making me do that," I tell him, and then let go, waving one last time to the crowd and walk back to where Aaliyah is waiting for me.
"So?" she asks, all excited.
"That was... incredible," I happily sigh out. I can't believe that just happened. Oh my. I think I'm on a cloud right now. Best. Day. Ever.
