Samantha's POV
"Okay, we got the makeup, and she looks good, are we ready?" One of the ladies who dragged me away asks the other. The second one nods and she opens the door and we start walking again.
"Much better! Let's get her on the first spot," Sandra immediately says as soon as she sees me. I look up to Shawn and instead of seeing him feeling bad for me, he's just staring at me.
He catches me catching him and he gives me a smile and a thumbs up.
"You got this!" He mouths at me as I pass him to get to "my spot."
"Attention everyone! I just want a one take raw take to see what this girl means," then she looks directly at me. "Show me you weren't just blabbing about nothing over there. I want to see what you were talking about," she tells me, then moves back to her chair behind the screen. I've never done anything like this before. Shawn walks up to me to get in his spot and moves me so no one can see me. He grabs my hands and holds them in his, comfortingly.
"You are going to be great. Just pretend it's just you and me, and show me what you learned this year at college," he gives my hands a squeeze then lets go. I take a deep breath and zone in on Shawn. I have to be in love with him, just as any regular teenager. That's easy, I've known him for years. That's the best way I know him, especially since I'm so close with his sister as well.
"Ready?" He asks me.
"Ready," I nod my head back. He smiles.
"Then let's be in love, shall we?" He smiles at me as he winks. I chuckle. 'Let's be in love,' I think as Sandra calls "action!" The music starts and a shot of adrenaline shoots through me. I'm so ready.
In a matter of three seconds, everything I've ever learned about performing goes through my brain and I feel great.
Love. Direct eye contact and not really looking at anyone else. I can do that.
Lots of smiles and giggles. I can do that.
Have him catch you admiring him. I can do that too. He holds out his hand for me to take, and raises an eyebrow as he starts lip syncing the words, only now I can hear him quietly singing the song. I duck away my face from him like I'm happy and grab his hand. I laugh as I start to pull him along with me, instead of him leading. We stop where we're supposed to and he starts opening the picnic basket and moving to get the blanket open.
What's common flirtation rule from elementary school?
Steal what is his and run with it.
Which is exactly what I do. I run over and before he can think anything of it, I grab the blanket and start running with it, smiling and laughing. Unfortunately, I don't get very far. Shawn comes up behind me and wraps his arms around me.
An intimate thing you should have for the person you love? Snuggle into them. Which I also do. He turns me around and he stares down at me, pulling a strand of hair out of my face. It almost feels like he starts to lean down to kiss me as he gets to the chorus, but as the role of "adorable girlfriend" I kiss him on the cheek and run back to the picnic place.
••••••••••
Sooner than I thought, the music stops and Shawn and I are just standing face to face, staring at each other. I didn't realize how his eyes sparkle until I was this close.
"CUT!" Sandra yells, breaking the moment we created. "I want to talk to you," she points at me, then starts walking away. I look over at Shawn and he just rushes out,
"Yes! Go! Go!" I skip a couple steps to catch up with her.
"Yes, ma'am?" I ask when she stops walking, which is in her "dressing" room.
"Where did you learn?" Is all she says.
"Excuse me?" I ask politely, not knowing how to answer.
"Where did you learn how to act like that? And how are you so good?" She's genuinely confused and interested, so I tell her.
"I just finished my first year at Brown, I'm a theatre major, but I also stared in all of my high school's musicals and plays," I explain quickly.
"Incredible. You have a true talent," she kind of whispers in awe. I take the compliment and can't help but smile with pride.
"Thank you, Ms, Sandra."
"I have a proposition for you," she turns to me, looking directly at me, no longer thinking about anything, but completely focused on me.
"And?"
"The other girl was an ant under your shoe compared to you. I want to know if you would take the job and be the girl in the video for me. Obviously, we would have to have papers signed, by you and your mom, and we would film the rest the next couple of days. We can't use that footage for anything without those papers anyway, but with consent, I would love you to be the girl in this music video," she finishes, looking at me for my reaction. I honestly don't know what to say. It would be an incredible opportunity, and I would have to get my mom to agree with it. I think it would be smart. But, I feel bad for the other girl.
"What happens to Claire?" I ask, concerned.
"She'll get paid for today, but we won't be using her for any other videos, and we'll send her home tonight," she tells me. "She'll be fine, I'll make sure it doesn't hurt her reputation."
I let the possibility sink in.
The girl in one of Shawn's videos. It's not like it's a thing or even if this will get that many views, but it could help my career in the future, plus I wouldn't have to just stand around for the rest of the weekend.
"I say, let's get those papers signed, and let's shoot a video!"
"Yes!" Sandra screams. "Amazing! I'll have a couple of my people drive down tonight and get your mom to sign the papers and we should be Golden by tomorrow morning then. I'm excited to work with you, Samantha Simmons," she sticks out her hand for me to shake, which I take in stride.
'This will be an interesting story for later in life,' I think as she pulls out paperwork for me to sign.
••••••••••
Sandra immediately sends out two people, a man and a woman, to go get signatures from my mom.
She tells me to follow her back out to where everyone is waiting, which I do. She calls Claire over and I start to walk away, but Sandra tells me to stay... which I do.
"Am I fired?" She asks, rubbing her hands together. I can feel the nerves radiating from her.
"Yes," Sandra bluntly tells her. I can't help but cringe at it.
"I knew it," she sighs, looking down.
"I'm sorry," I start to say, but Sandra cuts me off.
"You'll still get paid for today and your reputation won't be tainted, but we won't be using you for any other videos in the future," she snaps for two people to come over and get her. Before she walks away, Claire looks back towards me.
"You were amazing. You're going to do great in the future," and then walks away.
At least she didn't start screaming and yelling at me. Or slap me.
Sandra waits until Claire is completely out of the building and then yells to get everyone's attention.
"This is our new star in the video, Samantha Simmons. She's incredible and I expect everyone to treat her that way," and then turns back to me. "You will get Claire's old dressing room. Be here by 8 tomorrow morning to have people get you ready, and I'll see you then," she smiles at me, which is the first time I've seen her do it all day. She starts to walk away, but as she does, she yells out, "I see the beginning of a beautiful partnership!"
As soon as she's gone, Aaliyah comes running up to me.
"You did it!" She yells, running into my arms to give me a hug.
"I did it?" I ask.
"Oh come on, as soon as she put you in front of the camera, she was thinking about getting rid of Claire. You just had to impress her, which you did. Yay you!" She smiles at me and gives me another big hug.
"Well, thank you," I tell her, hugging her back.
"I knew you were gonna crush that," Shawn comes out of nowhere and tells me. I turn around and smile.
"Thank you."
"Is everything gonna be good with your mom?" He asks, a little nervous. I knew I forgot something.
"I have to call her right now!" I tell them as I run to get a better signal. I can hear them both laughing at me. "That's rude!" I yell, not looking back, but I know they can hear me.

(Later that Night)
I sigh, scrolling through channels on the tv as Aaliyah gets ready for her brother-sister date. I stop on Jurassic World. It's a good movie.
*knock knock knock*
"I'm not ready yet!" I hear Aaliyah say from the bathroom. I laugh, getting up.
"I'll get it," I tell her, walking to the door. I open it up to reveal a Shawn Mendes wearing a suit, but without the coat and just suspenders instead.
"You clean up nice," I tell him.
"You..." he looks down at me, I'm in shorts and a tank top, with my hair in a messy bun. "Look adorable," and then smiles.
"You don't have to lie," I tell him, hitting his shoulder lightly.
"I'm telling the truth. It might not be dress up adorable, but you still look adorable," he tells me, winking.
I honestly don't know what to say back to that. I guess I do look like sporty cute or something like that. I honestly didn't expect to answer the door or talk to Shawn at all tonight, but here we are.
"She's almost ready. Just finishing up changing, I believe," I tell him, pushing the conversation back towards Aaliyah... and not me.
"Cool cool," he says, leaning up against the door frame.
If I didn't know better, I feel like he's flirting with me... which can't be true, because I'm just Samantha Simmons and he's Shawn Mendes. That would be...
"You're a really great brother," I say, interrupting my own thought. He raises his eyebrow and tilts his head slightly. He kind of reminds me of a puppy like that. "For doing this with her and how you interacted with her earlier today. She really loves you and really misses you," I explain.
"Well, I really appreciate you saying that. I try my best to be a great brother when I'm with her, considering I don't get to be with her like a normal brother," he thanks me. And I know he really means it, because his whole demeanor changes. I smile at how much he truly loves and cares for his little sister. "Jurassic World?" He asks, referring to the tv behind me. I laugh.
"I really like the movies and it was the only good thing on, so yep," I reply back.
"I honestly wouldn't have thought of you as a Jurassic anything girl," he shrugs.
"Oh! Because I'm not all boyish and intense?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.
"Kind of, Yeah," he shrugs again.
"Well, for your information, I also really enjoy muddin', although that's more of an American thing, and four wheeling and rock climbing! Those are super fun," I tell him, laughing slightly afterwards.
"Well, good to know," he smiles at the end.
"Okay! I'm ready!" Aaliyah yells from behind me.
"Yay!" Shawn and I both say together.
I step back and Aaliyah steps forward. Shawn smiles down at her.
"Amazing," he says, looking at her. She poses a couple times and then we all chuckle. I get fake serious and say,
"Now, don't be out too late partying. You both have a full day of work tomorrow. Have fun and be safe." I hug Aaliyah and wave to her as they both leave. 'I wish I had a sibling,' I think as I hear their laughs from down the hall. I slump back onto my bed and look up to see Jurassic World. I'll be up late, most likely until she gets back, to make sure everything's good.
My brain starts freaking out about tomorrow, so I turn up the volume and hope to drown out my nervous thoughts.
