Samantha's POV (Monday)
It's been over a week since I left the taping and saw Shawn. It's also the day the music video comes out.
And I'm terrified.
Ever since that video of me singing "Halo" went viral, I've been getting nonstop requests from people to post another video of me singing. And I don't even know how they found me so fast.
And now, people are going to see me in Shawn's new video.
Again, I'm terrified.
Like, what if people see me and realize they don't like me because I'm portraying "Shawn's girlfriend"? This video could catapult me farther into what I've been studying and working towards or it could bomb my career before it even starts.
"You okay, Samantha?" Aaliyah asks, coming back into the living room with a bowl of popcorn.
"Oh, yeah. I'm good, just a bit nervous for the release," I try to shrug off my angst.
"When did he say it's going public?"
"One p.m." one hour from now.
"Which gives us plenty of time to talk about this weekend," she smiles at me, pushing me to stop worrying. So I do.
"What about this weekend?" I continue with her change of the subject.
"I really want you to come, but you're not getting paid, so I understand if you don't want to come," she sighs, looking down. I gently lift her chin to look at me.
"I wouldn't miss your birthday celebration for the world," I tell her sincerely. She automatically lights up, a smile appearing across her face.
"YAY! So, Mom and Dad are taking off work, and Shawn is coming in Thursday night, late, so he can be here for my whole birthday on Friday, and then he leaves early Saturday morning to get to a show that night," she happily tells me.
"I'm glad to hear I don't have to hurt him," I state and when she looks at me with a confused look, I explain. "I was going to kill him if he didn't at least stop by," I fake strangling her, like I would've done with him. She giggles through it, which makes me start laughing with her, and we end up laying on the couch, next to each other, laughing so hard tears started to form. And then she kind of just moves herself so she's using me as a pillow and turns on the t.v.
I'm grateful for her ability to make me feel so much better all the time and she doesn't even do much, it's just her natural personality.
Those darn Canadians.
Correction.
Us darn Canadians.

My phone sings but I ignore it. It's too far away to grab without making Aaliyah move, and she feel asleep on my lap. Ever since the hotel, I know she's been having trouble getting a good night sleep. So, I leave it alone.
A few minutes later, it goes off again. I ignore it again.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Again.
What the... if it keeps doing that, it'll wake up Aaliyah anyway.
Again.
Again.
What is happening?
And then it starts to ring. Crap.
I lean over to try to see who it is and see that it's Chrissy.
Why would she be calling me? She's normally at work right now.
Wait.
I snap my eyes over to the direction of the clock.
1:45 pm.
Ohhhhh crap. I reach over as delicately as I can without waking Aaliyah up and quickly answer the phone.
"Chrissy? Hey!" I quietly greet her.
"WHAT THE HELL?! What is going on?! Why didn't you tell me you were in his video?? How did you even get in it?? Do you have a manager now or something? Also, why do I keep seeing the same video of you singing Halo with Shawn as your accompaniment?? I swear if you lie to me right now, Samantha Christine Hope Simmons, I will-" I cut off the ranting best friend.
"Chrissy, hi."
"Don't you 'hi' me. What is going on?" she's calmer now, but I can tell she's freaking out.
"I used to know Shawn's little sister, Aaliyah. We were paired together for our 'buddy' system and it let me get to know Shawn. We became best friends, before they moved away, and when I came back for the summer, I saw Aaliyah one day and we caught up. It just kind of went crazy from there," I try to explain without giving too much away.
"You were best friends with Shawn Mendes?... I don't believe that. Because you would've told me before now, because I am your best friend," she doesn't quite believe me. I don't blame her.
"I'm sorry I never told you, but it wasn't exactly something I wanted to go around bragging about. He was my best friend, and he's still a person, just like he was back then. He's just older now and with many more people vying for his attention," I try to get her to believe me. There's silence on the other line. She's not answering me. "Chrissy, I'm sorry, but I also didn't think I should go around telling people that. Not many people would believe me anyway."
All of a sudden, without me realizing it, Aaliyah gets up from my lap and grabs my phone from me.
"Hello? This is Samantha's best friend?" She asks.
"Aaliyah! What are you doing?" I whisper yell at her. She shushes me.
I didn't even know she was awake.
"This is Aaliyah. Aaliyah Mendes. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that Samantha is telling the truth. She actually probably wasn't really even supposed to say some of that, but she did because you're her best friend. I won't tell she said anything if you don't, though. Do we have a deal?" She finishes, waiting for a response. "Good, she'll talk to you later, but I need her for a little while," she says and then hangs up.
"Hey! I was talking to her!" I complain, taking my phone back.
"It's alright. You can thank me later," she smiles at me, knowing she helped me out.
"Yeah yeah," I brush it off. I watch as she looks over at the clock, and then watch how her body freaks out and grabs the remote.
"What ya doing?" I ask.
"Pulling up the video," she tells me like I'm crazy.
"Wait, I don't know about that," I try and grab the remote. I'm not ready to watch this and see what people think. I can feel my heart beat start to get faster.
"Oh, you bet we're watching it," she scoffs. She searches it and it pops up right away.
In less than an hour, over 500,000 people have already watched it. No wonder my phone was going off. She looks over at me, I gulp and then nod. She presses play and we both sit forward in anticipation. It starts off with introducing us and putting individual pictures of Shawn and I, with our names. When the music starts, it's us just walking together, then moves to the picnic scene, into us running through the park. By the time the first chorus is going, Aaliyah and the dancers are with us, doing the dance that she created. I smile as she hops up and down, happy. The second verse starts and it's us driving in the car. It's the one of me sticking my head out of the car, and Shawn is laughing at me. And then it's still us in the car, but neither of us knew we were being filmed. It's when Shawn and I had our tickle fight. The cameras weren't even in the car yet.
How then?
Mike and Jason.
One of them must've started recording us.
I watch as we interact, naturally. It's so natural.
But the thing that gets me is,
we still look like we're a couple.
No wonder they put it in. And then it's back to Shawn driving, and he's just staring at me, looking at me... asleep. I fell asleep on the way back and they used that also.
I guess it makes sense.
"That's freakin' adorable," Aaliyah whispers. I look at her and she's totally enthralled with the video. I look back at the screen and look at Shawn, looking at me.
"It really is, isn't it?" I whisper to myself, responding to Aaliyah.
It goes through another chorus and it's the one where I made him try and dance with me. I laugh at his awkwardness in the beginning. The bridge comes and it's of us in the boat this time. We laugh and smile at one another and I tackle him into the water just as the beat drops for the chorus. I was wondering where that was gonna go. The last chorus is going and it keeps switching from every scene that we filmed at.
The picnic, the pretty bridge and plaza place, the boat, the car, and when the music starts to slow and get softer, it's us, under the bridge. Shawn is up against the brick wall and I'm right next to him. The kiss. I can't watch I can't watch.
"Oh, come on. This is the big finale," Aaliyah starts to whine next to me as I start to look away.
"Fine," I concede and look back to the t.v just as Shawn leans in.
I watch.
"Holy..." I whisper, just now fully realizing what that kiss looks like. It was... intense. And you can kind of tell that on the screen. Maybe I can more, considering I was there and felt it. I snap out of it and look back as we get smaller as the camera flies above us, getting the scenery around. The music fades and the screen turns black.
"THAT WAS AMAZING!" Aaliyah exclaims. "No wonder your phone was and is blowing up. I can still see it light up even though you put it on silent," she smirks at me as I look down at my phone as another notification pops up.
I open it up and it brings me to Instagram. It's Shawn's post. I look at it and it's a still from the video, the one of me sleeping on his shoulder. He captioned it "There's Nothing Holding Me Back video is OUT! Go check it out and give this incredible talent a follow! It was awesome working with her @samanthasimms"
He tagged me. Oh my. I go to my profile and see that I've gotten thousands of new followers in the last hour. Wow. Aaliyah looks over my shoulder and I can hear her sigh in my ear. I look over at her and watch as a smile grows across her face and she just gets really smiley and starts jumping on the couch.
"Aaliyah! What are you doing?"
"People know you now! Your dream is starting to come true!" She smiles and keeps laughing.
She's right. This is what I wanted. I wanted to be a famous actress. I wanted to perform. I can feel myself be able to breathe again. I was terrified, but
People are liking it.
No.
Loving it. And they like me.
And I was happy, I really was. But, weirdly, I didn't feel like jumping on the couch with Aaliyah to celebrate. There's something missing and I can't quite figure out what it is.
••••••••••
I'm watching comments roll in on the music video laying in my bed later that night.
"She's awesome!"
"Who is she?"
"This is so cool!"
"This is adorable!"
"Oh my gosh!"
"I want to be their friend!"
"I can't believe no one saw them filming this!"
"Oh my gosh! Aaliyah's in it toooooo!!!! That's amazing!"
I smile as I read them. People keep tagging me in things all day. Like, their favorite parts from the video or how pretty the places where.
And all of a sudden I get a flush of notifications that are alerting me that I was tagged a bunch. I leave the video comments alone and go back to my Instagram to see what's going on. I click on the most recent tag and it pulls up a video of Shawn at a VIP QandA for his tour. I look at the comment and see it's from just a few hours ago, from his show tonight. I watch him and feel happy for him. He loves this kind of thing. He calls on someone and you can barely hear her as she asks, "Who's the girl in your new music video?" Everyone shuffles around and all their attention shifts from the girl who asked the question back to Shawn. He doesn't know how to quite answer the question and I don't blame him. It was hard answering how I knew him at the wrap party. He smiles at the girl before answering.
"That is Samantha Simmons. We actually were best friends when we were younger, but we lost contact for quite a few years. Then we reconnected after she bumped into Aaliyah first. They also were friends back then," he answers without giving the most important things away. Like, how I'm her babysitter. He calls on someone else.
"How was filming for the new video?" He chuckles lightly as he starts to answer.
"It was awesome. It only took us three days to film everything. Samantha is truly amazing and I couldn't have asked for a better person to film this music video with. She was incredible and most of the cute scene ideas were hers, not mine. She's much more creative than me," he answers and I can see a light blush in his cheeks. And the video ends. I feel the same way, Shawn. I put my phone down and can't help but fall asleep happy.

(Thursday)
"You can't do that!" Aaliyah yells at me, pointing at the screen.
"I totally can, cause I just did it!" I yell back. "You're just mad I'm winning this game!" I tease her.
"No, it's because you win at all of them! It's not fair! You're totally cheating!" She tries to complain.
"You know I'm not though," I smirk as I say it.
"How should I know that?"
"Cause I'm Canadian," I answer, and we both burst out laughing.
"I guess that's a pretty good reason," she admits in between laughs.
We look over as the door opens, Tom and Susan stepping inside.
"Hello!" I greet them.
"Hi, Samantha! Aaliyah, what are you two doing?" Susan answers me.
"We're playing Wii Sports and I'm totally winning," Aaliyah tries to tell them.
"In your dreams!" I laugh as I finish the game, winning again.
"Yeah... I've lost every round," she admits in defeat.
"It's okay, I'm sure you'll win sometime in the future," I tap her back.
"Nope. Everyone in this house is better than me. Mom and Dad at least get beat by Shawn. He's the master," she huffs out, defeated.
"Well have to see about that," I smile as I get up, grabbing my bag and car keys. "I'll see you tomorrow!" I start to leave, but Susan stops me.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay? Shawn's supposed to be getting in earlier than he had planned and I'm sure he would be so happy to see you," she asks.
"Nono. I'm coming and invading your family tomorrow anyway, I wouldn't want to invade more time of it," I shake it off.
"Invading? You're not invading! We invited you!" She tries once more.
"Thank you, but I really should get back to my mom," I tell her.
"Well, alrighty then. We'll see you tomorrow! Have a good night!" She waves to me as I get to my car. I wave back as I pull out and drive away.
Tomorrow is definitely going to be interesting to say the least.
I was glad and beyond grateful that Aaliyah wanted to spend her birthday with me. But,
I wasn't going to lie, I was excited about seeing Shawn tomorrow. It was weird from going to hanging with him nonstop for three days and shooting a music video with him, to not speaking to him at all for two weeks.
I was ready to hang and talk to my best friend again.
__________
Cute cute cute. I hope this chapter was at least somewhat cute for you guys. Get ready for the next chapter, though, it's about to get real cute in the Mendes household.
