Samantha's POV
I'm sitting in my car in their driveway. Shawn is here. I know it. And it honestly feels kind of weird.
There's a black SUV in their driveway that isn't usually here. I feel like they should be better at hiding it, though. I take a deep breath, grab Aaliyah's present from my passenger seat and open the door. I walk up to their door and don't even get to knock before it swings open. I sigh, relieved.
"Mike! Jason!" I greet them, walking in.
"Ms. Simmons!" They both greet me back.
"What did I say about that?" I play-scold them.
"Samantha!" They try again. I smile.
"It's nice to see you guys," I tell them, going in to hug them. They seem surprised by it and kind of stumble back a step, but then they gladly hug me back.
"Samantha?" I hear a familiar voice from behind me. I turn around and see the all-too handsome Shawn.
"Shawn," I smile at him, and he responds with one as well. We both kind of just stare at each other for a little bit, and then at the same time we walk towards each other for a hug, me setting Aaliyah's present down.
We meet and his arms wrap around my back, my head burrowing slightly into his chest.
It, oddly, felt so... normal.
"It's really nice that you could come and hang out with Aaliyah on your day off," he tells me, looking at the present I set down.
"How could I not?" I scoff, then we both laugh.
"Samantha!" I hear coming from the hallway.
I turn around and yell back, "Aaliyah!" She walks/jogs over to me and we embrace. We split and I grab her shoulders. "I heard that it was someone's birthday today!" She smiles at me. "Happy Birthday, Aaliyah! I'm very grateful that you would want to spend your special day with me," I tease her.
"Who wouldn't?" I hear Shawn whisper from behind me. I ignore him and focus back on Aaliyah.
"So what's up first on the birthday celebrations today?" I ask, slinging my arm around her shoulder as we walk to the living room.
••••••••••
I watch as Shawn tries to act something out for the game, Guesstures. I watch at what he looks at and see what he's doing.
"Soccer?" I guess.
"Yes!" He exclaims, taking out the last card before it falls.
"I don't think the teams are evenly stacked," Aaliyah playfully teases.
"Did you see him?" I kind of scoff. "That was hard." It gets a chuckle out of everyone.
Except Shawn.
"Hey! I was really trying!" He protests, taking his seat next to me again.
"It's a good thing I get to act next," I whisper in response.
"Yeah! I don't think it's fair to have an actual actress on your team," Susan joins in.
"You have an extra person than we do. Which means you have more people to guess," Shawn fires back.
"Yeah! You guys have me!" Tom joins in, wrapping his arms around Aaliyah and Susan.
"I guess so," Susan concedes, laughing along with Aaliyah.
Aaliyah gets up and sets up her cards for her turn.
"You ready?" She asks her parents making eye contact with both of them.
She goes and their team gets three of the four cards. I hop up, ready to win. This is the last turn before the end of the game.
"Okay, Shawny we just have to get two of these to win. Let's go!" I start getting hyped up. I look at the cards and a wave of relief hits me. These are easy.
"Crap. She's totally got this. She's gonna win," Aaliyah sighs.
I think and then remove the cards again.
"Wait, what are you doing?" Shawn asks.
"They said I would have it easy because I'm an 'actress,' so I'll do the harder ones, just to even it out," I explain, putting the red cards into the game.
"I'll allow it," Aaliyah smirks.
I look at them. These are definitely harder.
Bat.
Moped.
Firefighter.
Mary Poppins.
Crap. Okay okay.
"Ready?" I ask Shawn, looking at him.
"Ready," he smirks at me when he answers. I unintentionally just did the thing, except we switched places. I can't help but smile at him.
I flip the switch and start acting out swinging a bat.
"Baseball!"
I keep going.
"Softball!"
I point to the fake bat and then hit a fake ball again.
"Bat!" I stop acting and grab the card.
I go to the next one. I pretend I'm sitting on one and start chugging along. He's not going to get this one.
"Car?"
"Motorcycle?"
I wish. I wave it off and go to the next one. I pretend I'm suiting up in gear.
"Superhero!" I shake my head. I pretend there's fire and it's hot then get a pretend hose and start hosing it down.
"Someone who's not in control of their body?" Shawn's voice gets higher with his unsureness. I look back at the card and it falls. Crap. We have one more card to win.
"Keep failing, Shawn!" Aaliyah teases him.
"Shut up!" He fires back. Sibling love.
Huh.
I've never had that.
I pop open a fake umbrella and Shawn gets excited and yells, "umbrella!"
I shake my head yes, but to keep going.
I jump up on the couch and hop off in the iconic Mary Poppins pose. He looks at me confused so I do it once more.
"Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins!" He yells. I don't even respond to him. I just run over to the card and grab it as it starts to fall down. I get it just before it disappears.
"Yes yes!" I start yelling.
"Nooooooooo!" Aaliyah yells as I grab it. Shawn hops up from the couch and runs to me. We embrace and he ends up picking me off the ground and spinning me. He quickly puts me down, though.
"Sorry," he apologizes. Huh? Why is he apologizing? "I'll help with dinner," he swiftly says and then starts walking away. I watch him go and almost start to walk after him, but his mom just stands up and waves it off like it was nothing. Tom follows suit.
"You girls relax while we finish stuff up. Congrats," he says, indicating my game win.
"Thanks," I awkwardly say, still a little confused about what happened with Shawn. I turn towards Aaliyah.
"That was weird, right?" I ask her, pointing in the direction Shawn disappeared into.
"Yeah... I don't really know what happened there," she looks in the same direction.
"As long as it wasn't just me..." I trail off. I shake it out and turn back to her, joining her on the couch. "So, 14. How does it feel?" I ask, focused on her again.
"Not that different. But, also really different," she kind of just shrugs.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. Like, Shawn's still gone on tour all the time and my parents are always at work, but you're back and here and I'm really happy about that," she smiles.
"I'm really glad I'm back as well," I smile at her, hugging her.
"We're all ready!" Susan yells from the kitchen.
"FOOD!" Aaliyah and I yell at the same time, jumping up from the couch.
••••••••••
"I guess mine's the last one," I say, just now realizing that she opened everyone else's presents first. I hand it to her and she happily takes it. I look over at Shawn and he swipes through his hair again. He's done that at least 20 times since we started opening presents like 10 minutes ago. He also hasn't made eye contact with me since we sat down to eat.
"Samantha..." Aaliyah breathes out. Crap. I hope she doesn't hate it. "This is amazing!" She laughs. She pulls it out and shows everyone.
"It's the first photo we took together when we were 'buddies' and the other one is from the first day I started 'nannying' her, when we went out," I explain the photos in the frame.
"Ohhhh! That's a really cute idea!" Susan smiles at me.
"There's one more thing in there," I tell Aaliyah.
"Oh!" She happily looks back in the bag and pulls out the sweatshirt.
"I know it's kind of weird, but it's a sweatshirt from my college. You once told me you wish you had a sibling's college to rep, and I know I'm not your actual sister, but I thought it would be okay if people didn't know that," I explain the random hoodie.
"You remembered?! I just kind of mentioned that randomly one day," Aaliyah's amazed.
"I clicked save on it," I tell her, winking. She looks up at me, smiles, but I can see her eyes water up.
"Oh! Are you okay? Please don't cry!" I get worried. Did I do something wrong?
"Nonono. This was amazing! Thank you, so much," she says, getting up. I get up and meet her for a hug. She holds tight and I can't help but squeeze back.
"Happy birthday," I whisper.
"Thank you so much for coming," she whispers back.
"My pleasure."
••••••••••
A few minutes later, we're all settling back down in the living room.
"I have something to show you guys," Shawn says, getting up. We all look at each other and shrug, not knowing what was going on. He comes back less than a minute later with his guitar. It's a really pretty guitar, honestly. It's my favorite color, so that's a big reason.
"I've been working on my songs for the deluxe album and I have one of them that I just recently finished up and I thought you guys should be the first to hear it," he explains, looking directly at me me, though. The first time since we won the game.
He sits down and gets his guitar ready.
I look over at Aaliyah and she seems bored. I forgot the only one of his songs she's really listened to is "There's Nothing Holding Me Back" and that was just because she was in the music video. I look at Tom and Susan and notice they seem excited, but also like they're not trying to really pay attention. Now, I'm confused.
This is cool. Shawn in debuting one of his songs in front of them.
Oh.
I guess this probably happens a lot for them. But not for me. So, you best believe I'm gonna enjoy this mini-concert. It's special. And cool.
"It's called Nervous," Shawn introduces it and then starts to play.
I immediately start digging the beat. And then he starts to sing.
"I saw you on a Sunday in a café
And all you did was look my way
And my heart started to race
And my hands started to shake, yeah"
He's so natural in this state. Normal. Calm. And he's happy about this song I know it, but there's definitely something else.
"I heard you asked about me through a friend
My adrenaline kicked in
'Cause I've been askin' 'bout you too
And now we're out here in this room"
He keeps looking up.
At me.
Whatever. Don't think too hard. Enjoy the private show, Samantha.
"I get a little bit nervous around you
Get a little bit stressed out when I think about you
Get a little excited
Baby, when I think about you, yeah"
I look over at Aaliyah and she's now suddenly very interested in the song.
