Samantha's POV
Ring. Ring. Ring. Please ring. I urge the bell to ring to signal the end of the class. I don't like college. At least it's almost the end of the year. Almost summer! Yay! I have four more classes and I'll be done with my first year. I wish it was less than that, but I guess it's better than having five, right? Ugh.
I am sad about this class ending, though. It's my favorite one of them all. Theatre 101.
"Samantha? Samantha? Would you like to demonstrate?" My teacher pulls me out of my thoughts. I look at the board and see we're going over facial expressions. If only that bell would ring. I get out of my seat and make my way to the front. Everyone stares at me. If I wasn't a theatre nerd, I would be terrified, but lucky for me, I'm used to people watching me.
"Okay, give me tired," Mrs. Smith tells me. I yawn a little and then rub my eyes as they "keep closing together." The class claps and I use it to pretend that it wakes me up, so I jump at the sound.
"Nice, okay how about frightened?" she goes to the next one. I start to look around me, scared. I scan the room and land on John in the back of the room. I widen my eyes, open my mouth slightly and breathe in lightly. Everyone looks to who I'm looking at.
"Very well, how about angry?" she asks.
*ring ring*
"Sorry, but I'm definitely not mad at the bell, so I'm just gonna go," I tell her, snapping my fingers and grabbing my bag.
Mrs. Smith stops me before I get too far.
"Just because you have so much natural talent doesn't mean you don't have to pay attention in my class," she tells me.
"I understand, Mrs. Smith. I'm sorry, it's just the end of the year has me way too excited. But, I promise I'm ready for the final in two days. You're my last class of my freshman year. You should be proud. That's cool," I smile as I walk off. I look back and see her laughing. I'm secretly her favorite student and we both know it.
On to my next class.
My phone starts ringing and I grab it out of my pocket to see who it is.
"Madré" I click accept quickly.
"Hi Momma. What's going on?" I ask as I make my way through the halls to my next class.
"So, you remember how you were looking for a summer job while you're home?" She asks, excited.
"Yes?" I answer, nervous.
"I found you one!" She yells happily. I have to pull away the phone from my ear so she doesn't ruin my hearing, but I quickly put it back.
"You did? What is it?" I ask, excitedly nervous.
"Babysitting," she gets out quick.
"Babysitting?" I ask, kind of disappointed.
"I know it's not exactly what you wanted, but the woman contacted me and I thought it was perfect," she keeps going.
"I guess, and if it'll help me make money, I'll take it. How long is it for?" I ask.
"All summer," she responds. I almost trip in the middle of the hallway.
"All summer? Serious? Tell me more about it!" I get more excited.
"Well, it's from 8 to 5, $15 dollars an hour and it's just one girl," she tells me some of the details.
"Mom?! Serious? That's amazing! How old is she? Is she a baby? Crap. I've never been alone with a baby for that long," I start to worry.
"Nono. She's... she's actually 13," she tells me.
"13? So not a babysitter. I'm there just so there's an 'adult,' aren't I?" I ask.
"Kind of, but they said they would pay for anything that you guys do, not from your paycheck," she keeps going. "I need to know if you'll take it by tonight."
"Are you kidding me? That sounds like a dream job! I'll take it. Thanks mom! You're the best, I gotta go though. I have my fourth last class of the year. Love ya, talk to you later!" I tell her and hang up.
'This summer is going to be interesting,' I think as I walk into my classroom.
••••••••••
I walk back into my dorm after my fourth last class ends. I had to take my final in that one, and I did not have any fun what so ever. I plop on my bed and look at the half packed up room around me. It'll be sad to leave this place, my roommate. Just in time, my roommate swings open the door and comes and plops down onto my bed right next to me.
"I'm so ready for school to be over," Chrissy says.
"Same," I agree with her.
"Do you have plans yet? Could we hang out?" She asks, hopeful.
"Chrissy, I live in Canada, remember? I'm in America solely to get my college education," I remind her.
"I forgot," she pouts.
"Please don't get upset. Look, we can still talk, and text and FaceTime like any time, since I probably won't be doing much babysitting," I sigh out.
"Babysitting?" She asks, interested.
"Oh yeah. My mom got me a summer job, but it's pretty much just being an adult in the house for one thirteen year old girl," I explain some.
"Well, how much does it pay?" she asks.
"$15 an hour."
"That's awesome!" She exclaims.
"It really is. It's from 8-5, so it's a nine hour shift, which is $135 a Day, five days a week,
so $675 a week, and $2,700 a month," I tell her, realizing just how much this is.
"Holy crap," she whispers.
"Holy crap is right," I whisper in awe.
"Hopefully she isn't a brat," Chrissy chuckles.
"That would suck, wouldn't it?" I respond, chuckling with her. "We should keep packing up," I tell her.
"In a few minutes," she says, then shushes me.
I just laugh.
•••••••••
(Three Days Later)
"Don't forget about us Americans, okay Samantha?" Chrissy dramatizes her departure from campus.
"I would never," I dramatize mine. We both laugh at each other, but then we both stop and I can feel a tear forming. "I'm really gonna miss you, Chrissy. I'll see you soon, though," I say, moving to hug her.
"I already miss you," she says as we hug. We hug tight, not wanting to let go and I can feel a few tears fall. We break apart and I can see a few tears fell from Chrissy as well. She climbs into her car with her parents and waves off. I wave excitedly back as she drives off.
"This is the worst part," I whisper when I can't see her anymore. I look over to my car, the one where I have to drive by myself, because my mom can't just cross the border to get her daughter from college. I open it up and throw in my last small bag in the front seat. I look in the back seat and still am surprised I got all my stuff to fit. It's like that Jenga game where you have to fit the pieces into each other. I climb into the drivers seat, start the car, and pull out to start my twelve hour drive back home.
••••••••••
I pull up to my house and I actually feel like I could just... fall on the ground and die. Unfortunately, my mom comes running out the door with my dog closely behind before I can.
"Samantha!" She yells, coming to open my door.
"I could sleep for two days," I grump as I get out to hug her.
"Well, that's all you have," She rushes out, moving to help me with all my stuff.
"Huh?"
"You start your job on Monday," she tells me, running back up to the house with stuff before I can say anything.
"At least I have you and the weekend," I tell my dog, bending down to pet her. She immediately starts to wag her tail. When I stop petting her, she jogs over to my car door and sits patiently. I grab a smallish bag for her and put the strap in her mouth. She grabs it and walks up to the house. Then, I grab my suitcase and another random bag and make my way to my room.
When I get to the door, a fresh wave of AC hits me and I smile. I get to my room as Nellie sets down her bag I gave her. She sits and looks back at me to await my next instruction.
"I love you, Nellie," I say as I set down my stuff. We both turn around and make our way back out to finish unpacking.
••••••••••
"Have you met the family I'll be 'babysitting' for?" I ask my mom later that night while we sit on the couch, watching a movie.
"No, but everyone I've talked to knows them and they love them. They're really nice," she says.
"Mom," I pause. "Everyone is in Canada." She looks over at me and we both start laughing.
"Well, I can say the girl's name is Aaliyah and the parents names are Susan and Tom," she tells me. For some reason, those names sound familiar, but I can't remember why.
"What's their last name?" I ask.
"They said they only wanted to be called by their first names, since you'll be a big part of Aaliyah's life, they thought it would be right to be on a first name basis," she explains.
"That's cool, I guess," I shrug. I look at the clock.
"I should go to bed. I'm pretty exhausted from the drive and everything," I tell my mom, moving to get up.
"Alright, have a good nights sleep, love you."
"Love you," I tell her, bending down to give her a kiss on the forehead.
"Come on Nellie," I whistle to her as I walk back to my room. I quickly get ready for bed and climb into bed, with Nellie jumping up to join me quickly.
I get a phone call and swipe to answer it.
"What's up Chrissy?" I answer quick.
"I'm already so bored and I miss you like crazy," she tells me.
"I know, but I won't be able to be bored for very long because I start my new job on Monday."
"Monday?! Already? Wow, looks like they really need you."
"I know. I'm just really nervous. Like, I got the job without even meeting the girl or the parents yet. I don't know if that's a very smart decision. Like, what if the girl hates me and never talks to me?" I finally share my angst.
"If she hates you, that would be one idiotic girl." I just groan. "Look," she continues, "You're a super fun girl to be around and you're really funny, so at least she'll laugh."
"I guess. I just don't want her to hate her summer, ya know?"
"Then do stuff with her! Don't keep her trapped in her house all summer long!"
"That's right! My mom said they would pay for anything we did!" I get some ideas.
"Well, I guess I'll leave you to figure some of that out. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Bye, Chrissy."
"Bye, Samantha."
"We just have to get through a couple days, that's it," I whisper to Nellie as she cuddles up next to me.
•••••••••
"They live about 10 minutes away, towards the west," my mom tells me as I get ready to leave Monday morning. I spent most of the weekend sleeping, catching up on my favorite tv shows, and eating homecooked meals from my mom. "I'll text you the address."
"Cool, thanks Mom. Love ya," I tell her, kissing her on the forehead and walking out the door.
I get in my car and look down to see the address from my mom come through. I put it into my maps and click start. I pull out and start driving.

Five minutes in, I feel like there has to be some mistake. The houses keep getting nicer and nicer. And bigger and bigger.
"Turn right into Prairie Lanes," Siri tells me, but that's the blocked in sub division.
"I swear if this address is wrong, I'm going to actually fall on the concrete and die this time," I whisper as I turn right. I stop at the pole and roll down my window to talk to the security guard.
"Can I ask why you're here, Ma'am?" He asks me.
"I'm here to babysit Aaliyah, Tom and Susan's kid," I tell him, trying not to freak out if I'm totally wrong.
"What's your name?" He asks, looking at something.
"Samantha. Samantha Simmons," I tell him.
"Okay, you're good to go," he says, clicking a button to open the pole thing. I drive through and follow Siri's instructions until I pull up into the driveway of the nicest house I've seen in my life. It's almost like a mansion, but a smaller version. Like, it has the elegance and beauty of a mansion, but it's half the size of the rest of the houses. I grab my backpack from the seat next to me and get out of the car. I swallow as I make my way up to the door. I wipe my hands off on my pants and ring the doorbell. The door opens almost immediately.
"Samantha?" The woman rushes out. I nod.
"Good good. I'm so glad that you could take the job. We asked around and your name kept coming up, so we knew we wanted you," she keeps talking, walking further into the house. I follow steadily behind her, her not stopping her talking rant. She finally stops in the living room, I think that this is that room, and a man is there, waiting for her.
"This is Tom, and oh! I guess I never introduced myself. I'm Susan," They both stick their hands out to greet me, and I shake both of their hands in stride.
"It's so nice to meet you. I think you and Aaliyah will get along great," he says, smiling.
"I'm excited to meet her," I tell them both, reciprocating his smile. They both smile and jump slightly from their excitement. They walk over into a new room, where a girl waits quietly on her phone.
"This is Aaliyah," they say in unison, making the girl jump.
"Is Samantha here?" she asks, looking up.
When I see her face, something in me changes. I know her. I know her face. I know this girl, but from where?
And she knows me too. Her face changes from bored to smiling, not a big smile, more of a smirk I guess. She recognizes me, but I can't put my finger on where I know her from.
"Well, we need to go so we aren't late for work, but you two have fun. We have some money in the kitchen if you want to go anywhere and there's a car in the garage, so you don't have to use your gas. We'll see you at five," Susan smiles as she and Tom leave, the door shutting behind them.
"Hi," Aaliyah says, looking at me.
