Samantha's POV
I climb into my bed after talking to Shawn for three hours. We pretty much just caught up with our lives and everything that has happened since we lost contact. I was exhausted, especially after my first day and everything that happened, like jumping into a river.
With all that in mind, I think it took me like three seconds to fall asleep.
••••••••••
I wake up to whimpering and thrashing about of blankets and such. I rub my eyes, trying to see what's going on. My eyes adjust quick enough and I see Aaliyah kicking her legs around and moving her body. I start to panic a little, thinking it's a seizure or something like that, but I keep hearing, "no. Please. Please stop. No." Whimpering. Pleading. She's having a bad dream.
I push off my covers and run over to her bed.
"Aaliyah. Aaliyah, wake up. Everything's alright. Everything's going to be okay," I start to say, but when she doesn't wake up, I gently push her and her eyes shoot open. They go wide-eyed and it looks like she's about to cry. I grab her and wrap her into a hug.
"Samantha?" She whispers, scared, not of me though.
"I'm right here. You had a bad dream, everything's alright, okay?" I tell her, rubbing her arms like my mom used to do when I had a bad dream. She looks up at me and nods, like she's acknowledging me, making sure I'm really there or something. "I'm right here," I repeat. She starts to calm down, just a tad, but then she whispers.
"Can I sleep with you the rest of the night?" I honestly wasn't expecting that from an almost 14 year old, so the dream must've been pretty bad.
"Of course, of course," I say, getting up with her to get back into my bed. We both climb back into my bed and she huddles up next to me, and so I do what my mom always did to me, I wrap my arms around her, so it feels like she has someone protecting her all the way around her.
Eventually, her heart rate goes back down and I can tell she fell back asleep, which makes me relax again, and I start to drift off.
I don't fall asleep.
"No, no please. Please stop!" Aaliyah's voice jerks me awake again.
'What is going on with her?' I think as I try and wake her up again.
"Aaliyah, wake up, it's okay. I'm right here, nothing is going to hurt you," I tell her as I gently rock her awake. She opens her eyes, but this time, her eyes widen and she lets a few tear drops fall.
"I don't want that to happen, I don't want that to happen. Please no," she whispers to herself.
"Aaliyah, you're perfectly safe. Nothing is going to hurt you," I try to talk to her, but she just keeps whispering to herself.
"Please don't let it happen, Samantha. You'll protect him, right?" She asks, finally turning and looking at me.
"Of course, of course," I automatically answer. "Who sweetheart? Who do you want me to protect?" I ask, wondering what's going on.
"Shawn, Shawn, Shawn has to be okay. He'll be okay, right?" She whispers back to herself.
She had a bad dream about her brother, no wonder she's freaking out.
"He was right there, but I couldn't do anything, Samantha, I couldn't do anything. I tried, but they wouldn't let me go. I couldn't do anything," she's freaking out. I can tell she's about to hyperventilate or something if I don't do something.
Let's do my job and take care of Aaliyah, shall I?
I grab my phone off the bedside table, not stopping rubbing my hands up and down Aaliyah's arms to help her calm down. I quickly search through my contacts and click "call" when I get to his name.
I almost think he's not going to pick up, but he answers on the sixth ring.
"Hello?" Shawn's voice is low and scratchy through the phone.
"Your sister needs you, NOW," I tell him, still listening to Aaliyah freak out. This is bad. Real bad. I've never seen her like this, ever. Not even when I was in grade school.
"I'm coming," he tells me, no questions asked. I hear shuffling next door and then a knock on the door. I worry about leaving her by herself for even a few seconds while I have to open the door for him. I quickly scoot off the bed and run towards the door, I swing it open, and see a shirtless Shawn standing there, looking worried. I get distracted for a few seconds by the surprise of him, but quickly usher him in towards Aaliyah. He doesn't hesitate to climb into the bed with her, wrapping her up in his arms, holding her close.
"Hey, it's me, Shawn. I'm right here," he immediately starts to tell her. This is the moment when I fully grasp their relationship. They are super close, much closer than I've seen most other siblings.
As soon as Aaliyah sees that's he's right next to her, she calms down, and starts to breath normally again. I watch as Aaliyah leans into her brother like she's making sure he's real and wanting his comfort. It's the cutest thing I've seen.
Shawn turns around and waves me over, I skip a step and make my way back to the bed.
"She was asking for you," Shawn tells me.
"Oh, okay," I say, and make my way over to where I was on the other side of the bed. I rub her back like my mom did and tell her,
"I'm right here Aaliyah." I can tell she finally starts to relax and breath normally, which makes me feel better.
"Can you stay with me?" She whispers to Shawn. He looks up at me, wide-eyed, like he has no idea.
"Of course he can," I answer for him, starting to get up and move to the extra bed.
"No, Samantha, you too," I hear her voice say, which stops me dead in my steps.
Sleep. With Aaliyah. With Shawn in the same bed. Crap. But I can't say no, I'm too freaked out on if she'll even sleep through the rest of the night without having another nightmare, but having us both next to her will probably help. Shawn looks up at me, and shrugs like he doesn't know what to do either, but also kind of has this pleading look in his eyes, worried for his little sister.
"Of course," I finally get out and make my way back to the bed. I climb in and help Aaliyah back under the covers. I look back at Shawn and realize he's still shirtless and that's probably even worse, so I grab the t-shirt he gave me earlier in the day so he doesn't have to be... half naked.
"Thank you," he mouths to me as he puts it on. Aaliyah scoots up close to both of us, pushing us all closer together. I don't know how I'm supposed to fall back asleep with... freakin' Shawn Mendes in my bed. If anyone finds out about this, he's totally screwed, which totally proves how much he loves his sister and how much he's willing to sacrifice for her. There's a couple minutes where none of us say anything, but just the sound of our breaths are heard.
"Do you want to talk about it, Aaliyah? Your dreams?" I finally break the silence, realizing I always felt better after I verbalized my dreams and my mom told me that they would never happen and why. I don't hear an answer, but I feel her head nod.
"Well, someone took you in the first one. They took you right out of Mike and Jason's security, and they ran off with you. Shawn wasn't there and when I tried to stop them, Mike and Jason held me back. Then, it was like I was just watching what was happening to you. They were hurting you, bad. They were hitting you and... and stabbing you, I think and you kept crying out for help, but no one came and I couldn't do anything," her breathing starts to get choppy, like she's about to cry, and so I scoot even closer to her. I look up and a single ray of light hits Shawn's face, showing that he's staring at me, eyes-wide, and kind of scared as well. It almost looks like a teardrop fell down his face. I look back down at Aaliyah.
"That's never going to happen. Ya know why? Because Mike and Jason are only two people out of a whole army that would protect me if anyone where to try even throwing a pencil at me," I tell her. It seems to help her calm down.
"But there was another dream wasn't there?" I ask her, nervous as to what she had to go through next.
"Shawn. He was on stage and people started throwing things at him. First, it wasn't bad things. Like, flowers and pieces of paper that had poems written on them, but then they started throwing tomatoes, and all kinds of fruits and vegetables. But then, they started throwing rocks and small bricks. And then, people were throwing knives and large rocks and they kept hitting him and he was dying. He was dying and I couldn't do anything about it. I tried to get them to stop, to tell them that they were wrong, but when I went on stage to help, someone shot a gun, and Shawn ran in front of me to save me, and I watched him bleed. It was everywhere. Everywhere..." she trails off, shaking. Shawn and I look up at each other this time, and we both scoot closer, making sure she could feel someone around her, protecting her.
"Heyheyhey. That's never going to happen, either. Because my fans love me too much, and I also have an army of security ready to protect me at a seconds notice. And I know that everyone loves you more than me, so no one would do that. Plus, you have Samantha and me to protect you and stay with you," Shawn explains why it wouldn't happen this time. And he's right. I am with her, always here to protect her.
She wraps her arms around one of each of our arms, pulling them in so she has something to hold and then leans back her head. She sighs, feeling better, but she doesn't close her eyes again.
"I'm scared to go back to bed," she whispers.
"Shawn and I will fight off anyone who tries to get into your brain. And we're right here, and we aren't leaving anytime soon, okay?" I tell her, soothing her to fall back asleep.
We lay in silence for probably fifteen minutes before I know she's asleep again, and Shawn and I wait another fifteen minutes to make sure she's alright. After that, Shawn turns to me.
"I'll go now," he whispers, barely loud enough to hear me.
"Nonono. You have to stay. If she wakes up, and you're gone, she's going to freak out even more, especially if it's in the night still. And if she has another bad dream, I'm gonna need you to help me out," I whisper back to him. He thinks about it and realizes I'm right, so he settles down in the bed, as I start to get up.
"Wait. What are you doing?" Shawn whispers from across the bed.
"I can't stay here, and you knew why," I try to not be awkward about this.
"You have to stay right here the exact same reason as I do. She needs you here, next to her. You're a part of her family, of our family now, Samantha. Lay back down and try and get some sleep, superstar," I can see him wink at me at the last part, even though it's pitch black. I sigh, knowing he's right. I don't know why I thought I could get up after I yelled at him to stay. I climb back into the bed, settling next to Aaliyah, who subconsciously settles in towards me. I can't help but smile down at her.
This is still super weird and crazy on so many levels, but I'm going to be here for Aaliyah, especially if she has another dream about losing us in a horrible way.
I feel terrible for what she's had to go through, especially since she was so worried about me for one of them. I wish I could bundle her up and keep her safe or share my nice dreams that I've been having, just so she had some happy in those scary dreams of hers. I just hope she sleeps through the rest of the night nicely, without any more scary dreams. And even if she just sleeps through without any dreams at all, good or bad, I would be fine with that.
With her sleeping soundly next to me, I finally get hit with that exhausted bug I know has been coming. I am going to be dead tomorrow, especially being up for at least an hour and a half with her.
I feel the sleep start to hit me, so I yawn.
"Goodnight, Sammie," I hear Shawn say. I can hear the smile in his voice.
"Goodnight, Shawny," I know he can hear the smile in mine.
__________
So, this is cute and terrifying. I hope this never has happened to anyone, but I know I've woken up before in a terrified state and made sure my sister was next to me, sleeping soundly because I've had bad dreams. But I wanted to write this to show how close Shawn and Samantha are getting again and how much they both truly care about Aaliyah.
She is how they both met each other, the first time and now, again.
Anyway, hope you're enjoying and I'll read you next time (that was supposed to be a pun, but it was really bad)
