The painting is called Date on the Bench and was made by Leonid Afremov.
There she was again. In her favorite spot. Just laying there unbothered by the rest of the world and the hundreds of people buzzing around. The loud noises didn't startle her as she was immersed in another world, a world of fiction. Her nose in her book as she laid supinely on a bench.
Coincidentally, I had entered a world of my own as well. One of dreams and hopes I imagined coming true before my eyes. I dreamt that I would finally manage to muster courage enough to go and talk to her. I dreamt that she would smile her dazzling smile as I spoke to her or she would laugh at one of my nerdy jokes.
I, Peter Parker aka the Spiderman, could not find the courage to simply talk, as in make conversation or use words to form simple sentences and say them aloud, to one girl otherwise known as my crush.
I know it sounds silly that I could be so petty as to merely watch her or as I have heard that is called, stalking. I never thought I would ever be doing this but then again, I never expected to be so unbelievably in love with her.
I fell in love with her little dimples that showed up when she smiled, her freckles that were sprinkled on her face. I fell in love with the way she talked and the mesmerizing way her lips moved. I fell in love with her tongue that dripped sarcasm. I fell in love with her strength, courage and loyalty... I fell in love with Y/n Y/l/n...
As I admired her from afar I saw someone heading towards her in a hurry, but she was much to engulfed in her book to notice. The man in his late thirties, walked with his hands in his pocket as he bit his lip nervously. His eyes seemed to be looking at her momentarily and then shooting back down to his feet as if he didn't want to be caught casually glancing at her.
There was something disconcerting about this particular man and he was approaching her with increasing momentum. I stood up from the grass where I had been sitting and started walking towards her as well, sensing something bad was going to happen.
The man saw my movement and must have felt threatened since he started speed walking towards her. I increased my pace in turn hoping that he didn't notice this time around. He was just passing behind her bench when he reached his hand out and grabbed her bag and then began sprinting.
I ran after the man, my spider powers helping me reach a speed much faster than that of the thief as I heard Y/n yelling.
The chase was short-lived due to my sprinting abilities being far more superior to the man's and so, Y/ns' bag was successfully retrieved. I webbed up the man in the alley way I had cornered him in and hurried back to Y/n with her bag so she didn't worry.
She saw me from afar and her demeanor visibly relaxed. She smiled softly as she waited for me to return to her, her hands intertwined resting in front of her.
"Thank you. Thank you so much," She said, the sincerity twinkling in her eyes. "I really wasn't paying attention. I was just so lost in my book and-"
"It's alright," I cut her off feeling myself begin to blush. " I'm glad I could help Y/n. Here." I handed her her bag.
"You... know me?" All the sudden, I felt my a flash of heat surge through my body as if I was caught lying.
"We go to the same school." I tried not to stutter.
"Oh. Actually, now that I think about it... I think I've seen you around. I'm sorry but are you the one who has a friend who is a little chubby and is very nerdy?" She asked me politely, her eyebrows furrowed. She was most likely describing Ned.
"Ah, yeah that's me." I chuckled awkwardly not knowing what to say after that. I cursed my inventful brain which somehow managed to create a formula for web but was not able to use a few words to form an appropriate sentence for me to say.
"I heard you guys were making a Lego Death Star. That's pretty cool stuff." Her lips turned up into a soft smile which made my heart beat faster.
"I-I didn't think you w-would be into that kind of stuff." I stuttered, taken aback by her previous statement.
"Well, not so much the Lego part but I really love Star Wars," She sat back down on the bench." Want to sit with me for a little?"
My heart fluttered, my brain becoming even more inept but I somehow found myself sat next to her.
"You like Star Wars?" I asked completely shocked. I had always pinned Y/n down as someone who enjoyed teen flicks more than science fiction and adventure.
" Yeah I think it's a really interesting story and the movies were great too. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't be caught dead in that universe." She flailed her arms around for dramatic effect.
"Why?" I chuckled, this time it was more natural. I seemed to be loosening up a little.
"It's such a scary universe. I mean it's so big and even if it is so big, I feel like there would really be no place where you would be safe. Take Naboo for example, your typical peaceful and calm place yet the federation army still invaded. Plus way too much politics and scamming." She continued with her wild gesticulation as she made her point.
"I can see your point but how is that really different from our world? Take Sokovia as your example." I thought aloud, my brain returning to it usual effectiveness.
"Maybe you're right... After all, we don't know exactly what happens to every star system in that galaxy and every person born. All we see is the heroes and their antagonists lives and occasionally a civilian population vulnerable to armed conflicts." She agreed with me, I hope. I didn't really know where this conversation was going but then she giggled.
"Do you ever think we live in a world that is not real?" She turned to me, her eyes sparkling with an unknown delight.
"Why would you think that?" I asked, a smile forming on my face. I felt strangely comfortable around her even though I was still admiring her, but this time from up close.
"Aliens invaded New York, a superhero dream team called the Avengers is actually real, Spider man is patrolling our streets, Thor is a god that came to protect earth from Asgard, which means that Norse religion is true. It's all so crazy, isn't it?" She was spot on. Her argument solid. I thought about it for a little before replying.
"I suppose we are living our own fantasy story." Her eyes twinkled at my words.
"Yes. I like that." She nodded her head looking away from me, her hair fell from behind her ear into her face. My hand almost instinctively moved up to tuck it back and just as I felt the soft skin of her ears beneath my finger tips, her eyes locked with mine.
"Thank you" She whispered, her cheeks turning rosy in a matter of seconds and I pulled back my arm, realizing what I had done. Inside my mind I was chastising myself for doing something that could be considered so creepy, especially since we had never ever talked before.
"I like you Peter. I wish I had had the courage to talk to you when I had heard about the Lego Death Star. I would have enjoyed building it with you and Ned, that is if you would have let me." She was much braver than I, speaking her mind. Ironically, she spoke about not having courage when she had way more than I did and I was Spider man.
"Well, we didn't exactly get to build it together... A-and then it sort of broke..." I stuttered remembering the night Ned found out. I was starring at my lap due to my embarrassment but I glanced up at her quickly to see her eyes filled with hope.
"We could build it together if you like?" I almost choked out and mentally beat myself up.
"I'd love to."
Four words, that brought me so much hope and so much joy. Maybe I could finally have a chance with her and as of today, I was even more hopelessly in love with her. She was just like me! But she was unique in her own way and I loved that too! I really liked how her mind came up with all those theories and I couldn't wait to hear more.
As ridiculous as it sounds, I was glad someone stole her bag. It was the small push that finally made me talk to her. Something like fate's push...
I might have forgotten about the dude I webbed up in the alley way but... the web would dissolve in about two hours.
