I wasn't scared.
I wasn't panicking.
The smoke was filling the room and forcing itself down my throat.
I hurried to try and get out, the door wouldn't budge.
Not much was going through my mind and my body moved on pure instinct, the instinct of survival.
I pushed against it but nothing worked.
The rusty fire escape, I climbed down it.
The height meant nothing to me.
I could feel my heart pounding but I wasn't scared.
Adrenaline.
I was close to the ground by now just a few more floors but the window on the bottom floor burst.
Heat and flames and smoke poured out, all desperate for oxygen.
What now?
It was melting the railing.
I had to jump or run now.
As I made a run for it, the flames licked my arms. Pain erupted from my limbs.
I stumbled but caught myself and kept going down.
Down until there was nowhere else for me to go down.
I was trapped
The flames threatening above me and the heat taking a toll on my body.
There was nowhere to go.
A window burst beside me from the inferno getting shards of glass all over me.
What an awful way to go...
The window had opened up a passage...
However it looked bleak.
Well I didn't have a better choice so I jumped inside... tired and sore...
The smoke was way too intense in here
Bad choice
All around me were children's things and that was when the ringing in my ears ceased
A baby
There was a baby crying
I ran around coughing trying to find it
All alone surrounded by bars
It was screaming and screaming
I held it in my arms, the soft pudge of skin...
I didn't know where the parents were but maybe I could save this baby, if not myself.
I ran out of the little apartment going down the main stairs
But my muscles, my lungs they needed air
I was beginning to slow down
I fell against a wall trying to shield the baby from the smoke
Is this as far as I could get?
Another window broke and I shut my eyes covering the baby with my body.
Glass pierced my skin but then...
Someone, someone was here
I couldn't hear them but they were trying to pick me up
"No, no the baby..." I pleaded
I couldn't see the face either but it was covered by a mask
The person took the baby and within seconds had disappeared.
I was so out of it I must have dreamt up an angel
I coughed again
My lungs felt like they were disintegrating as if by poison
I finally blacked out.
~~~~~~~~~
Thump
Thump thump
Thump
Thump thump
"Hurry! We're loosing her!"
Someone was pushing against my chest incessantly.
Stop it... It hurts...
All of the sudden my eyes open wide and I cough more than I ever have before
My throat is raw
But the oxygen I'm fighting to inhale isn't enough
As if someone heard me an oxygen mask goes around my mouth and nose
I can breathe
My eyes finally see where I am
People are all around me watching me with concerned eyes
Someone saved me?
I looked up at the sky darkened with smoke
Someone just flew by
Someone in red
People began to cheer
After such a fire? Cheer...
"Spiderman!"
Spiderman?
My brain then remember the masked figure that took a small crying baby from my arms
Spiderman...
I hope one day I can thank you...
