I sat up in my bed, my head aching. My feet touched the cold floor and with a shiver, I made my way to the kitchen. The smell of pancaked overwhelmed me as melodic hums filled my ears.
"Morning mama, what's for breakfast?" I asked happily.
"Bacon and pancakes." My mom replied in a sing songy voice.
"Mmm my favorite!" My favorite male voice cheered.
"Shane!" I cheered, jumping into his outstretched arms, he spun my around and kissed my forehead. Mamma said every time Shane went to work he was risking his life for our safety, so I always treated him nice. I did love him though, he was my mammas boyfriend, has been for the past 3 years. He kissed my mammas cheek and slung an arm over her shoulder.
"My best friend got shot on the job yesterday," Shane said sadly, my mamma gasped, "I'm going to spend the next few days tryna comfort his family. His son is devastated, refused to get out of the car."
I peaked out the front door and saw Shane's squad car, and in the front seat sat a boy who looked around my age. I'm only 11 and don't really care about what boys think of me yet so I ran outside with my pajamas on. I was wearing my fluffy pajama pants and a grey and pink t-shirt. I knocked lightly on the car window, trying not to startle the boy, and he looked up at me, tears in his icy blue eyes. He rolled don the window and glared at me.
"What?" He snapped, sniffling a little.
"Wanna play?" I asked, and a smile crept on to his lips.
The boy pulled himself out of the car and I led him to the backyard and up into my playhouse where we just played. After a while we started playing truth or dare. It was his turn.
"Truth or dare?" He asked in his friendly, childish, tone.
"Hm, truth?" I said it more like a question.
"Okay hm...Have you ever had your first kiss?" He asked nonchalantly.
"Um, no." I laughed nervously.
"Do you want to?" He asked slyly, causing me to laugh and breath out a sure.
We counted down from 3 and leaned in really quickly. It was only a peck, and we both laughed and wiped our mouths.
"Weird." We both said in unison, not understanding why adults kissed so much, "okay, your turn."
"Okay, truth or dare?"
"Truth." He answered.
"I heard about your dad, did he really get shot?" I asked, not knowing I was pushing past touchy territory.
"Yeah, where's your dad? Don't see him around." He muttered bitterly, causing tears to prick in my eyes.
"You know, I know what it's like to not have a dad, so we can go through this together." I pulled the boy into a hug which he returned.
"Children!" Shane called playfully, and we both jumped down from the treehouse. "Time to go kiddo," Shane said, ruffling the boys hair."
"You know what! We've been playing this whole time and I don't even know your name!" The boy gasped in realization.
"My name's Vallory, what's yours?""Carl, Carl Grimes."
