As of the date above, there are over 798K works in the Harry Potter fandom on FanFiction.net (FFN), and I found over 2,025+ individual ships during my search!
In order to find the necessary data for this book, I sifted through fanworks using FFN's pairing filter. I realize that this strategy leaves something to be desired, since FFN didn't add the option to filter by pairing until 2013, but using the filter to estimate ship popularity is much easier and more manageable than any other option. For example, if 100K works posted before 2013 were tagged with the same four characters, there is no way of checking which characters are shipped together without going through every single one of the 100K works individually to find out! That means that my data here is based solely on pairing tags and not the number of works that happen to feature both characters, as other people may use.
