"I love you, (y/n)." Toshinori could see the happy tears in your eyes as he spoke the words that he'd been longing to tell you since childhood. When you smiled, he thought his heart stopped.
"I love you too, Toshinori. So much." He leaned down and kissed your lips once more, his smile pressing against yours. You giggled, eyes sparkling, and said, "I'm really not fine when your not around." Holding you closer, he pressed his forehead to yours, taking in your radiance lovingly.
"I'm the same way, (y/n). I'm not fine when I'm not with you."
"To..." Toshinori grasped desperately at the dream, at the memory of love and warmth.
"...shinori." No, he didn't want to return to cold reality, but the hand on his shoulder was persistent.
"Toshinori!" He jolted awake, dreams of you falling away despite his best efforts. Rubbing his eyes, he saw the sky lightening through the window he'd been sleeping against, dawn approaching as the train raced towards its destination.
"We're almost there," his mentor, Shimura Nana, murmured next to him. The woman had her muscular arms crossed over her chest, her posture relaxed as she looked at him knowingly, a slight smile on her lips. "Dreaming about (y/n)?"
"Yeah." Toshinori ran a hand through his disheveled hair and leaned back in his seat. He stared at the ceiling for a minute before confessing, "It hurts, Shimura-sensei. I miss her so much I can barely stand it. I'm not sure how much longer I can be apart from her."
"I know, Toshinori. I promise, I won't keep you away from her for much longer. After this week you'll be free to make out with her all you want."
"Wha-?! That's not what I-! Shimura-sensei!" He blushed, but couldn't deny it. Part of his dream had been kissing you after all. The pro-hero only chuckled and ruffled his hair even more.
"You can't even deny it! So cute! All teasing aside though are you truly ready for what I'm going to put you through this week? This is going to be the harshest training you've had yet." Toshinori blinked as she switched from fawning to serious in an instant, his blush receding under the weight of her gaze.
"I know and I'm ready. I'll do anything I need to to become the symbol of peace." 'Even if it means being separated from the girl I love.' His mentor's familiar smile returned, though this time her eyes glinted with merciless mischief.
"Great! This is going to be fun!" For her? Yes. For him though? No. Toshinori could tell this was most definitely not going to be fun for him.
'But if it means I'm one step closer to being able to protect everyone, to being able to protect her, than it'll be worth it.' Returning his gaze to the window, he saw that the sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon. You would be waking up around now, getting ready for school, maybe exchanging good morning texts with Nemuri-san. Toshinori's mind wandered. How were you doing? Had anything happened lately? Were you sick? Happy? Sad? He wished he could tell you how much he missed you, how much he loved you, how he longed to hold you in his arms and kiss you again, but he'd left his phone behind, cutting himself off from the world during this important leg of his training.
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the picture he'd brought of you. It was creased and bent after being carried there for so long, but it was the only piece of you he had. His fingers straightened the folds fondly as your beautiful likeness gazed up at him. 'I'm sorry for leaving, (y/n), but it won't be much longer, I promise. I'm not fine without you after all.'
