Catching Edward

I make it to Italy and try to see anything, but all I see is the three thrones in Volterra making me groan. I know nothing of what is going to happen except that I end up in the throne room of the Volturi at some point. I flit close to Volterra in an attempt to catch him before he enters the city and possibly talk him out of this deranged idea. My phone rings and I accept the phone call being careful to listen for Edward. I haven't paid any attention to the caller I.D. so when Alice talks I get a pleasant surprise.

"He'll be there in a minute. I figured you would be unable to see him coming and I'm gonna check on Bella. I saw her jump, but I didn't see her come out."

"You were right I can't see anything right now. Thank you for the heads up."

We hang up and not long after that I hear Edward's thoughts and flit to his side startling him. He flinched back in shock making me raise an eyebrow until I read his plan and cross my arms over my chest. He won't look me in the eye which becomes annoying because I need him to look at me. He won't believe me if he doesn't look me in the eye and see the truth in them. At that thought his eyes flicker to mine and hold them making me relax a bit.

"Obviously, you know Bella has jumped off the cliff back in Forks. What you don't know is if she is alive and how would you feel going through with this plan if she was alive?"

"Alice didn't see her come out which most likely means that she didn't come out Donia. I wish she came out, but there is a possibility she didn't." He says softly with pain in his tone.

"Fine! If you go through with this then I'm going to be by your side because you aren't going to be alone."

"Donia you don't have to come with me." He replies softly which infuriates me.

"Damn it Edward are you that thick? You're a brother to me just like Jasper and Emmett are even though you left us without telling us at all! You told me to stop worrying and I agreed to, but the truth is I never stopped. That's what family does when one of them disappears out of nowhere."

"Do you really want to risk the Volturi knowing about you? I knew before you yourself that you thought of me like a brother, but why doesn't that mean you have to come?"

"I don't care if they know about me at this point. I have to come because I would hate myself if I was to let you go alone."

He huffs out a breath knowing he isn't going to shake me making me give a triumphant smile. The two of us enter the city, but we won't meet the Volturi until tomorrow considering it's too close to sunrise. We get a hotel room where the two of us sit on the beds waiting for night to fall. I'm lost in my thoughts when Edward breaks me out of them.

"Who is Canaan and why are you so worried about him?"

"He's the surprise I was telling you about on the phone because I've adopted him. I don't know how old he is because James wouldn't tell me and I didn't want to upset him more. He's half-vampire and a witch, but not like I was. I don't exactly understand how, but his father was a vampire and his mother a witch who died giving birth to him. It shouldn't be possible yet here he is and I saved him from his father who was going to kill him. Coincidentally, I kicked his father's ass twice in the last few days because of it."

"You should talk with Carlisle about it when you get back and maybe the two of you can come up with an idea. That's what the two of you did when you first showed up out of the blue for us. Alice didn't tell us you were coming until the day you moved to Forks and she wouldn't say what you looked like. She just told us you were going to be important to us. So, you and Jacob had a falling out?"

"Yeah that's why I went back the first time and I was there when he phased, but Paul kept me behind him. I walked up to him and he didn't react until I was going to touch his head then he snapped at my fingers. At first I thought he was confused, but he did it again confusing all of us. I told him that wasn't any way to treat his best friend and he said his best friend was dead. He's so angry that I'm around the pack because he thinks I'm going to kill them all."

"Embry accepted that you were a vampire though and weren't you best friends as well?"

"Yeah Em and I are still best friends and when he saw me for the first time he was shocked, but happy. When he phased back into a human he tackled me in a hug and started crying because I just seemed to go missing. Then I showed up as a vampire and he realised something had happened, but he didn't ask me about it. Like I told Carlisle if Jacob wants to stay like this then I lost him and I can't help it."

"How is everyone really?"

"Well everyone kind of sticks to the house unless we're hunting and Carlisle goes to work with me following him. Esme is upset because you're gone and I'm home sometimes, but not all the time. I've been splitting my time between home, La Push, and New Orleans since I need answers in New Orleans."

He falls silent and I do as well while looking outside waiting for the sun to sink below the horizon. I've caught up to Edward, but if Alice doesn't tell me that Bella is okay then this may be the end for Edward. A part of me would go with him because he's the brother I've never had and it's going to break Esme's heart to hear the news of his death.
