Pack Surprise

We finally make it to Sam's house and Canaan peels out to see that I have stopped finally. His curious eyes take in his surroundings and I calmly allow him to do so with a small smile. I'm distracted from him when I hear the front door open and see Emily looking out confused. I give a bright smile before slowly walking up the stairs and her eyes widen in surprise before a smile appears on her face. She moves to hug me, but notices that my arms are full right now. I give a soft laugh before setting Canaan down where he hides behind my legs with big eyes. Emily gives me a quick hug before moving back so as not to scare Canaan which makes me give a sweet smile. I swing him up into my arms and he wraps his arms around my neck carefully watching Emily.

"Li this is Canaan and Canaan this is Emily. Canaan darlin' you can trust Emily like you trust Jasper and Edward."

He nods before I set him down and he toddles over to her with a smile causing her to give a laugh. He grabs onto her legs before she picks him up and enters the house with me right behind her. He blinks taking in the house in a few seconds before she sets him down to look around. I smell the food that is on the table and turn to her with a smile, but I keep a close eye on Canaan just in case.

"So, the pack will be back in a few?"

"Yes and I'm guessing Canaan is the surprise you promised us? He's such a cutie, but why do you have him?"

"I'll tell you when the pack gets back because it upsets me when I think about what he went through. I'd rather only have to tell the story once today. Have we had any new wolves since Jacob?"

"Yes there was another wolf that phased while you were gone. His name is Quill and we were going to tell you, but Alice told Jacob you wouldn't be able to answer your phone."

"Ah Quill phased while I was stuck in Italy. Well it'll be a double surprise for him then when they show up."

The two of us fall silent as we watch Canaan walk around the room and a soft smile appears as I watch him. I sit on the counter watching him with careful eyes as I hear the pack coming up the walk. I carefully scoop Canaan up and hop back onto the counter where he sits on my lap. Emily looks up from leaving the dishes when she hears the hoots of laughter that makes me giggle. Canaan presses himself closer to me almost as if he can hear the wolves and I feel his slight fear. I run my hands through his hair as the wolves come into the house and stop seeing me on the counter. I give a smile before Embry comes forward slowly before bending down to Canaan's eye level with a smile.

"Hey there bud my name's Embry. What's yours?"

He looks up to me with wide eyes and I can feel his heartbeat rise as he begins to freak out. I hum a tune as I stroke his hair instantly relaxing him as the pack watches on. I can feel awe from all the wolves except Jacob who is still angry. Once he calms down he looks at me, but asks me a question in his mind knowing I will answer.

"You can trust everyone here and none of them will hurt you darlin'. You can go ahead and introduce yourself to them."

"My name is Canaan." He says speaking for one of the few times he chooses to.

They all come forward and introduce themselves in a way so as to not scare him making me love all of them more. Paul presses a kiss to my cheek before moving back and I notice Jacob has not come forward. I look at him to see what he's going to do, but he continues to refuse to say anything to Canaan making me upset. He could put our differences aside for a few minutes to introduce himself, but he chooses not to which makes me such in a breath.

"Li can you take Canaan upstairs for me?"

She nods and comes over to Canaan who reaches out to her. She carefully picks him up before going upstairs and I turn my gaze on Jacob with a furious look. I hear Quill whistle before shifting away from Jacob when I get off the counter. Jacob crosses his arms over his chest as I slowly move forward with careful steps. Before I can get too far Paul wraps an arm around my waist pulling me close to him.

"Jacob he's just a child. You couldn't put our differences away for a few seconds just to introduce yourself? What has he done to receive such a negative reaction?"

"He's not human and that's wrong!" He hisses at me making me still as a statue.

"Yes, He is half vampire as you have sensed, but you are judging him harshly. He didn't ask for his father to be an asshole or a vampire, but that's the cards he was dealt. His mother died giving birth to him and the night I saved him his father was going to kill him. I saved him from that man and let me say this Jacob. If anyone tells me you're rude to him I will rip into your hide words than a wolf."

"You're going to keep him then?" He says with thinly veiled disgust.

"Hell yes I am. He's four for fucks sake Jacob and he doesn't trust anyone really. He trusts me, Jasper, Edward, and Emily. What do you think would happen if I sent him away?"

"You're a danger to him and so are the Cullens!"

"None Of is would dare to hurt him and he was glued to Jasper for days. Jasper has a problem with his thirst like I do, but he didn't hurt him and I haven't hurt him. I get you're upset Bella chose a leech over you, but I need you to back the fuck up. I legally adopted Canaan which means he is my son and if he is upset because of you then I'm coming for you."

Quill looks shocked until Embry quietly tells him what's gone down between Jacob and me. I take a deep unnecessary breath before Paul pulls me outside where I sit on the porch with my head in my hands. I run a hand through my hair as Paul sits next to me on the porch and I give him a weak smile. He quickly kisses me making me give a goofy smile when he leans back.

"I love you," I say seriously.

"I love you too and by that look you have to go."

"Of course, but I'll be around more now that we're back in Forks permanently."
