Chapter 15 (Not a Second to Late)

Nicole's POV

It's Monday! I couldn't process everything that's going on. I went to school early and was surprised because Violet was already there.

"Friend, good morning," she said.

"Good morning." I replied.

"Let's check the results of the exams."

I forgot about the exams. She pulled me to a notice board and checked the list. We checked her name first and I was shocked that she was rank fourth.

"Wow! Congrats, Violet! You're really smart," I was happy for her.

"Yeah! I heard that if you're in the top one hundred, you get to join the field trip for free," she said.

I suddenly felt anxious. I didn't want to look at the rankings anymore.

"Well, I don't know who's smarter," Violet said.

"Why?"

"Am I smarter than the girl who got zero on her quiz, but afterwards, ranked ninety-seventh on the exams," she was giggling while she said this.

I looked at the board and saw my name exactly at rank ninety-seven! I was so elated! I could join the field trip for free! I was about to cry but quickly got a hold of myself because there were a lot of students already. I was smiling like crazy. Then I heard someone.

"Congrats, Miss Flores."

I turned around to see prez looking over my shoulder, but he wasn't wearing a mask anymore. I heard the girls near us talking.

"He is so handsome. Do you think he's a student here?"

"Are you an idiot?! He's wearing our uniform; so, yes!"

"What year is he in?"

Then all of them walked towards us.

"Uhm, sir, what grade are you in?" one of the girls asked.

"I'm currently a freshman. I'm Clyde Rubio, your student council president."

All of them were shocked. I heard them whispering, "I thought he was ugly and was hiding behind a mask."

"Excuse me ladies," Prez was off again...the girls followed him.

"You must thank him Nicole," Violet said.

"I was just lucky you know! What's his rank anyway? Maybe I'm higher than him!" I laughed.

Violet casually pointed at the first name on the notice board. I gulped but my throat seemed to have run out of saliva. Prez is really smart! After having our laughs, we proceeded to our classroom.

"Congratulations to the rankers in our previous exams! Special mention to Miss Nicole Flores! You made me so proud!" Ms.Leila said with much delight in her voice. "In addition, as I mentioned, rankers will have free tickets for the field trip! But, you can only claim this free ticket if you join a club."

"What are the clubs?" I asked.

"Well, there is the chess club..."

When I heard this, I didn't pay much attention to what she said next. I'm not good at playing chess, but at least I know how to play the game. I decided right away that I would join the chess club.

It was lunch time. I remembered what Violet told me: thank prez for tutoring me. I bought a sandwich and a soft drink then headed to his room. I knocked on the door of the student council office.
