Six Years Later

The phone rang and I snatched it up.

"Gretchen, I said I was not to be disturbed." I snapped, decent help was hard to find.

"I realise that Miss Gray but I have a call on line two, they say it's urgent."

"Well who is it and what's the urgency." I didn't have time for this.

"Oh, um Ill find out." I listened to her stumble over her words, obviously intimidated.

I sat there waiting, I couldn't imagine what the urgency was.

"Ah her name is Stephanie, she said to tell you that you really should take her call."

Fuck, a name from the past, a bad past. Stephanie, the last time I'd seen her was, well I couldn't remember I was to off my face. And how the hell did she find me? I'd worked so hard to get where I was, to hide my past.

I sighed. "Fine, I'll take it."

"Putting her through now."

I waited until I heard the click.

"Kylie speaking." My voice was clipped.

"Well aren't you the hardest person on earth to find." Her voice bought back bad memories. "Anyone would think you were hiding."

"What do you want Stephanie?"

"God Kylie, I'm sorry, it's Gabby."

Gabby, another name I'd like to forget. "What about her?" Like I cared.

"She's dead, drunk driving, finally killed herself." Oh god no.

I closed my eye's,  I really didn't need this. "And?"

"Jesus Miss Hoity Toity, I thought you'd like to know, maybe come to her funeral, after all we were best friends for ten years."

"I'm extremely busy." I couldn't go back there.

"Please Kylie, think about it. I need you." She gave me her number and hung up.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I closed my eye's, picturing Gaby, she'd never sorted herself out, not like the rest of us. Maybe if we'd been better friends.

I noticed tears on my cheeks, damn, little Gaby who had the biggest personality, gone.

I picked up my phone. "Gretchen, I'm unavailable the rest of this week. Please reschedule my appointments.  I have to go to L.A."

"Yes Miss, would you like me to book a flight?"

I thought about it. "No, I think I'll drive."

"Yes ma'am. " She hung up.

Well I guess I was going back to L.A. I was going back, to that horrible place, I was going to look my past right in the face.
