// chapter one. //

God I hate this place. Why am I here again? Oh yeah, it's choosing night. Whatever, I need to find the guys so we can do this and I can leave. Walking through the sea of people on the dance floor only made me regret coming to homecoming all over again. Normally I would be looking forward to choosing but I had very low expectations for my "victim" of the year. All the girls I had been keeping an eye on had a date. Stupid game and it's stupid rules. Finally I spot a familiar brunette dancing on a not so familiar red head.

"Let's go lover boy we gotta find Ian so I can get the hell out of here." I huff to my now frustrated friend, Elliott.

"What the hell man I was totally working that chick." Elliott says referring to the confused red head who was looking in our direction.

"C'mon man it's choosing night you know if you dance with the girl your interested in, one of the guys will give her to someone else." I explained as I scanned the faces of all the other sweaty teenagers in search of our other two friends. Finally I spotted Ian and Cason across the room, of course.

"Who said I was interested in her?" Elliott defends, I almost forgot we were having this conversation.

"Oh shut up, come on I found them." Walking through the dance floor again I looked at every girl we passed, seeing what I had to work with. This year should be interesting, all the obvious picks actually had dates I thought, as we approached the other members of our "group" we had known each other since we were little freshman. Cason had took us under his wing and introduced us to the game, every year at homecoming the other boys pick a girl that came without a date for each boy. The objective? Sleep with her before prom. Yeah, it's stupid but it keeps the school year interesting.

"Alright can we get this over with, this music is killing my brain cells." I exaggerated but I really wanted to get out of here. Ian and Cason turned to us with identical smirks.

"But Lucas I thought this was your favorite part of the game, choosing." Ian spoke up, I knew he was toying with me, he knew this year's chooses sucked. So I didn't reply, but I didn't have to, Cason had started a new conversation.

"Alright here we go, I choose for Elliott, Elliott chooses for Ian, Ian chooses for Lucas, Lucas chooses for me." He states while rubbing his hands together. All of us simultaneously begin looking through the crowd. My eyes find out about fifteen girls without dates, dancing with friends rather than grinding on the guy that bought them the ten dollar ticket into this shit hole.

Glancing at each girl I realize that maybe not all the chooses this year suck but the likeliness of Ian actually choosing a hot girl for me is low. I find a girl for Cason within two minutes, a senior named Anna I think, she's not ugly so she'll do.

"Alright got mine," I say, alerting the others. When I get no response I look back to the cluster of people and silently thank God that one of the rules is that the girl has to be in our class, freshman girls are just so weird. Speaking of weird I hope Ian doesn't choose Stacy for me, nerds are hard to get to. I had Emily last year, one of the smartest sophomores in our school. she was hard to crack but in the end I got her. I'm surprised no one has caught onto this little game of ours, but so far so good.

"Okay got it. Let's go." Cason says. Elliott and Ian nod in response. "Elliott you've got Amy." Elliott's gaze follows Cason's hand, well I'll be damned, at the end of Cason's finger is Eliott's red head from earlier. Looks like he lucked up, I have a feeling I wouldn't be so lucky.

"Alright, I can manage that, Ian you've got Stacy." Elliott says with a small smile, he knew Ian hated nerds.

"Oh you're playing dirty huh? Okay well I need more time, I was thinking Stacy for our little Lucas here but now I need someone else." Ian huffed.

"Well in the meantime, Cason you've got Anna." Cason looked out and found the blonde haired girl, she was laughing at something one of her friends said, she actually looked pretty hot. Damn, should have looked harder, whatever Cason will thank me later.

"Okay okay, I've got Lukey's girl," damn my mom for calling me that in front of them the first time they came over, "you've got Riley." he smirked.

"Are you f.ucking kidding me?" I managed, the only thing worse than a nerd? A girl that hates your guts. My eyes found their way to Riley, sure she was hot but she had barely looked my way these last two years. How could she not? I was hot and I know it, that's why Cason picked Elliott, Ian and I for his freshman players, he knew we were attractive. It made the game a lot easier when the girl was already attracted to you, so Riley was definitely going to be a challenge.

"Okay you all know the rules so let this year's game begin." Cason laughed as he made his way towards Anna. Even Ian started walking towards Stacy, but I on the other hand was walking towards the door, I was tired and not ready to have to deal with the wrath of Riley. So I walked to my parked car and started the engine, beginning to think of ways to get into her pants.

Mondays suck. Actually any day that starts off with me waking up and getting ready to go somewhere I hate sucks. Especially when I know today I will have to start the game. Sure I have basically all year to get Riley but with this girl, the sooner, the better.

I don't even know why I don't like her, the thought crossed my mind as I pulled into the school parking lot. Maybe because she doesn't give me any attention, not that everyone does but more people do than don't. Riley will have to give me attention if I want to win this year's game, no one knows for sure what happens if you don't sleep with the girl, it's never happened before.

Walking through the halls I realized that getting Riley would be a lot harder than previous years, we had no classes together. I swear Ian did this on purpose. Asshole.

Finally arriving at my locker I threw my soccer bag into the mess. Grabbing my Chemistry book I started making my way to my dreaded first class, I hate science. At least I had this class with Elliott, the teacher hated him so their relationship kept the class interesting.

Sitting down in my regular seat I started thinking of ways to start talking to Riley, something tells me she wouldn't want just a casual f.uck. Who would have thought that I, Lucas Owens would care what Riley Brooks wants. Maybe I could smile at her, no that never works. I know I'll do what I always do to get my "victim's" attention, I'll wink at her when I see her in the halls. I don't know why, but it always works.

"Don't think so hard, heard it's bad for the brain." Elliott said as he extended his arm to smack my head.

"Like you know anything about the brain." I said as I ran my hand through my hair making sure his childish gesture didn't mess it up.

"Yeah yeah I'm a idiot whatever. But really what were you thinking about, looked pretty intense."

"Oh, nothing. Just how I really don't wanna go to practice today." I lied, I couldn't let Elliott know I was nervous on how I was going to get Riley. Wait, was I nervous?

Before Elliott could answer, the bell rang and chemistry begun. The teacher droned on and on but finally, it was over. Now it was time to start my plan to get Riley, if you could even call it a plan.

As I rounded the corner I saw her and a group of her friends walking my way, looks like it's my lucky day. I stared her down, and right as she was passing she looked at me. I winked and sent a smirk her way, she turned her head back to face her friends but before she did that, she rolled her eyes. What the hell? The wink didn't work? The wink always works!

"Watch it lover boy. If you keep staring at her you'll run into someone." Elliott voice brought me out of my thoughts. When did he get there? Wait, he just saw that happen?

"I don't get it, the wink always works." I huffed, now pissed that my stupid wink didn't work on Riley. Who did she think she was anyway?

"I think you're gonna need to make up some new material for this one dude." Elliott said bringing a hand down to my shoulder.
