// chapter eight. //
"No."
"Why not? Don't you wanna spend quality time with your good ole friend Lucas?"
"In case you have forgotten, I hate Lucas. And if you think I'm going anywhere with that bitch Amy you're crazy." Riley responded to Elliott as he tried, and failed, to persuade her to come play laser tag.
"Come on Riley do me a solid, please? I really like this girl and I don't know how to go about a first date so I need my wingman and he needs you so he won't get lonley."
"Why should I care?" She said placing books in her locker. It was barely seven o'clock in the morning and I had already indirectly pissed her off.
"I don't know? Here how about this, Lucas will pay for you and everything."
"Dude what the hell." I said, this wasn't part of the plan.
"What I can't pay for her! I'm supposed to be on a date with Amy!" Elliott said defensively.
"Okay." I jerked my head around to look at Riley once the word left her mouth.
"Okay?" I said in disbelief.
"Yeah, I'll go. Mainly because I'm tired of you pestering me. And I better not have to interact with Amy. Like at all." She said closing her locker.
"Deal deal. I want to be the only interacting with her anyway, if you know what I mean." Elliott said with a wink.
"You're disgusting." Riley stated simply as she walked past us and down the hallway.

The rest of school was rather uneventful, Riley still sucked at math and my classmates were still annoying. I walked from my last class straight to my car. Tonight I was supposed to pick Riley up at six then meet Elliot and his f.uck buddy at the laser tag place. I'm not even one hundred percent sure what laser tag even is.
As I pulled into the drive way I was surprised to see my mother standing on the porch. Stepping out from my car she looked up at me.
"Hey mom." I said flatly.
"Hi Lucas. I was waiting for you to get home." She said with an uncomfortable smile.
"Oh." Was all I said as we walked through the front door of the house together. "I thought you were on a trip?"
"We were. We just got back this morning. How are you?" She said as we made our way into the kitchen.
"Good, when will you guys be leaving again?" I asked knowing it was inevitable that why would leave me alone again.
"Um, about a week I think. What would you like for dinner?" Her attempt at a conversation change did not go unnoticed by me, I just chose not to point it out.
"Actually I'm going out with some friends tonight. I should probably start getting ready." I said having a sudden urge to get out of the room. I didn't hate my mom, we just had a really awkward relationship. It seemed forced most the time.
"Oh okay. Have fun." She said as I walked out of the room.
I hurried up the stairs and to my room. I already had to go through a tense conversation with my mother the last thing I wanted to do was run into my dad.
Getting ready took me all of fifteen minutes I mean I was going to see Riley did I really have to dress up? So I sat down on my bed and scrolled through my phone. It was only about five thirty but I wanted to get out of the house so using the piece of paper Riley had given me with directions to her house on it I went to pick her up.
I rang the doorbell at five forty five, I got lost about three times, Riley sucks at directions.
The door swung open and I was greeted by a three foot two girl. "Lucas!!!!" Claire cheered.
I bent my knees so I could be at eye level with her. "Claire! What's up?"
"Are you and Riley going on a date?? Like in the movies!!!" The little girl squealed, she never seemed to run out of energy.
"Um, no. We are just going to play laser tag with some friends." I explained.
"Oh. What's laser tag?? Oh wait!! I wanna show you my new tutu come on!!!" Claire said as she pulled me into the house and closed the door. I looked around the front room, their house was nice, not as nice as mine, but nice.
"Come on Lukey!!!" Claire said as she grabbed my hand and bounced up and down.
"Lukey?" I said as I smiled down at her.
"Yeah, Lukey. That's your nickname. Now come on!!!" She said as she pulled me through the living room then the hallway. All through this time I saw no sign of Riley's parents, maybe they go on ski trips too.
Suddenly I was standing in a pink room with every princess imaginable painted on the walls. I looked around to see dolls, dresses and stuffed animals all over the floor.
"This is my room! Do you like it? Riley paints it for me, every time there is a new princess she adds her!" This caught my attention, Riley could paint? Why didn't I know that? "Oh look! Here's my tutu!! Do you like it??" She said showing me a big orange tutu.
"Yeah it's really cool!" I said taking it from her to inspect it. I had wore one of these before for school spirit day it was a joke and all the guys wore one too.
"You should put it on!! Pleaseeeeee!"
"Fine." As much as I wanted to, I couldn't say no to Claire's sweet little voice. I put one leg through then the other and then I was full on wearing a little girl's tutu. It was rather uncomfortable but Claire thought it was hiliarous.
"Owens. What are you doing in my house, more importantly, my baby sister's room? Wearing her clothes?" Riley's voice came from the doorway.
"Well I rang the doorbell and Claire answered and one thing lead to another and here I am modeling her tutu. What do you think?" I said as I posed and spun around in it. Earning more giggles from Claire but an unimpressed expression from Riley.
"I think you are an idiot." She said flatly. "Now come on let's go get this over with. Claire, mom is in her room okay?"
"Okay!!" Claire said as I stepped out of the tutu and exited her room. Claire followed us all the way to the door and when we walked out she called "Have fun on your date!!"
Riley and I both turned to respond at the same time "It's not a date!" But Claire had already closed the door.
