// chapter thirteen. //
"Broken? What the f.uck do you mean broken?" Riley demanded looking back and forth between her screaming sister and me.
"I mean broken like the bone that was once connected, isn't anymore." I told her raising my eyebrows. I looked around the neighborhood, it was only about ten at night but someone might call the cops about a screaming child. I picked Claire up, careful of her injured arm. "Where's your parents?" I asked Riley.
"Um, my mom is probably sleeping and my dad is at work." Riley said quickly. "Why?"
"Well someone's got to take her to the hospital." I spoke as I continued to walk to my car.
Riley stopped in her tracks. "H-hospital? No no are you sure?"
I stopped and turned around "Unless you know how to set a bone back into place, yes. Now run ahead of me and get her car seat and put it in my car."
Riley hesitated a second before running to her car. I looked down at Claire, her screaming had subsided but she was still crying. "It's okay we are gonna take you to the doctor to make it all better, okay?" I said quietly to the little girl, not sure if she could hear me over her own sobs.
Claire nodded her head but the tears continued to flow down her face. I could understand her pain, I had seen seventeen year old boys cry over broken bones.
Once I reached my car Riley had already moved her car seat. "Riley put her in the car seat, be careful of her arm." I said as I handed Claire to her sister.
Riley grabbed her with shaky hands, I wasn't sure who was freaking out more, the seventeen year old or her younger sister. I had never seen Riley so timid before, and under any other circumstances I would have been intrigued.
After Riley buckled Claire she got in the front seat and I pulled out of the driveway. "Should we tell your mom?" I said as I hastily made my way down the road.
"No it's okay." She said quietly. "We can handle this, right?" She said almost as an afterthought.
"Yeah, it's okay we've got it." I said grabbing her shaking hand. "You okay?" I said looking over to her quickly, she was biting her lip and staring intently out the window.
"Y-yeah I'm fine." She said briefly making eye contact with me. I didn't believe her at all.
--
We reached the hospital in just under ten minutes. In those few minutes Claire's cries had subsided and Riley had called the hospital letting them know we were on the way. What hadn't stopped however was Riley's shaking hands.
I pulled up to the hospital entrance and let the two sisters out. I went to park the car before joining them in the waiting room.
"Why the hell do we have to wait her arm is clearly f.ucking broken." I said after about three minutes of sitting in the uncomfortable chairs.
"I don't know I wish they would take her back already." Riley said sneaking a glance to Claire who was now silently crying while holding her injured wrist to her chest. Riley was bouncing her knees up and down.
"Hey are you okay?" I said as I brought my mouth to her ear in an effort to keep the conversation just between us.
Riley turned to look at me before shaking her head, no. I brought my arm around her shoulders in an effort to comfort her. I guess it worked because she soon brought her head to my chest. "This place just kind of freaks me out." She said just barely above a whisper.
"This place?"
"The hospital. I hate it. I hate that I hate it. I hate that I'm freaking out while my little sister is the one in pain." She murmured. Even when Riley was scared she was thinking of her sister.
