// chapter sixteen. //

The only thing illuminated the dark living room was the movie playing on the tv. Riley's head was resting on my shoulder while the rest of her body was stretched across the couch. I wasn't exactly sure what the plot of the movie was but rather how many times Riley had tucked her hair behind her ear. It was the same strand every time, she would pull it back then three minutes later it would fall out and she would return it to it's previous position.

She sighed next to me before mumbling "Stop that." She lifted her head up for a brief moment before putting it back down on my shoulder.

"Stop what?" I whispered, playing dumb.

"Staring at me, it's freaking me out." She said turning her face so that she was looking at me. We were incredibly close and it seemed as if she noticed this too. After making her point she returned her head to my shoulder.

I let out a sigh and redirected my attention to the scene playing on the tv. After a few minutes of trying to figure out who was who and what was going on I excepted the fact that I was hopelessly lost. I peeked a glance at Riley, she was watching intently.

My arm was around her shoulder hugging her body to my side and if anyone walked in on this, they may have assumed that we were dating. Did I want to be dating Riley? I'm not even sure if I knew how to date.

Looking at her again I noticed that Riley's blinks were lasting much longer than usual. "Feeling sleepy?" I teased.

"Yeah, a little." She said honestly.

"We can go to sleep now I'm not gonna make you stay up all night. I could go to sleep now, this movie isn't really interesting to me." I spoke quietly. Pulling out my phone I saw that it was almost eleven.

"Yeah it's not interesting because you were creepily watching me the whole time." She said as she stood and stretched out her arms.

"You know some people would think that was romantic." I answered, who even am I anymore? I stood and began leading her out of the living room.

"Oh yes I'm sure there are hundreds of freshman who would kill to be in my shoes right now. The Lucas Owens leading me to his bedroom. How scandalous. How romantic." She said stressing the last word as we walked up the stairs.

"Oh shut up, if you were anyone else my intentions in my bedroom would be anything but romantic. In fact if those were my intentions we wouldn't even be going to my room. We'd have to go to the guest room. Not just anyone is allowed in my room." I mumbled, just loud enough so that she could hear.

If it had been three weeks earlier Riley and I would have been going into the guest room now. But I had decided I couldn't sleep with her tonight not after earlier, and possibly never.

Pushing open my door I lead her in. My room was relatively plain with white sheets and grey curtains. All my furniture was matching wood and I had my own walk in closet.

"It's surprisingly clean in here." Riley stated as she looked around.

"Well I don't really spend much time in here other than sleeping and studying since the rest the house is usually empty." I answered awkwardly. She had yet to ask me about my parents seemingly never ending absence.

She nodded and I decided to change the subject. "So um I'm not exactly sure how this works I've never actually had a girl sleep over like this so um what do you want to wear? You can wear that if you want I just can't imagine that being comfortable but I mean whatever is cool. I could get you some of my mom's clothes would that be weird?" I started rambling but stopped myself before it got too out of control.
