// chapter ten. //

"Dude what the hell are you wearing?"

It seemed like I had been asked that a million times today and it wasn't even lunch yet.

"I lost a bet okay?" It's like people have never seen a teenage boy wearing a princess crown and purple pants. Claire really could have done much worse, I was actually really pleased with what she decided on. Riley of course tried to get her to make me wear a dress but Claire said that was too easy.

"Hey Owens you know Halloween is next week right?"

I decided to ignore all the comments I got as I made my way to the math room for Riley and I's daily tutoring session. When I arrived at the door I saw Riley leaning over her book with her hands in her hair. She was focused so hard she didn't even notice me enter the room.

"If you keep making that face, it'll get stuck like that you know." I said as I sat down and retrieved my pencil and notebook.

"I have a test today and I can't do any of this stuff. I'm gonna fail. I'll never pass this class and then I'll never graduate because I'll never have enough math credits and then I'll be homeless." Riley explained as she looked up from her book.

"Oh come on I know you can do this stuff, I've seen you. Plus we have forty minutes to cover all the stuff you don't understand." I said honestly.

"Okay okay. So how do you do number twenty three?" The brunette said as she pointed to a problem in the book. I scooted my chair closer so I could see, I had forgotten my contacts, again. As I squinted my eyes I could read the problem.

Ah, it was simple. I explained it easily to Riley and watched her begin writing. Once again I noticed her beauty, the way her long hair hung from her face and reached the desk and her paper. The way her long eyelashes looked every time she blinked. The way her face scrunched up when she focused.

Riley looked up when she was done and handed me her paper. After looking it over I told her she was correct and she asked me for another problem. I could barely see it so I scooted closer again.

Another easy one, I explained it and Riley tried it. Correct again. She asked me the next, it was a word problem so I had a really tough time seeing it. Once again I scooted my chair closer.

"Having trouble?" Riley's voice broke me out of my concentration on the words.

I looked up and then realized our proximity her face was mere inches from mine. Her brown pupils were looking back at my blue ones with a questioning look. Up close I realized that she had slight freckles scattered on her cheeks. For the second time in ten minutes I took in all her beauty. Riley clearing her throat brought me back to reality.

"Oh um, I can't see." I said snapping my attention back to the book. What the f.uck was that?

"You know most people that can't see wear glasses, if you wanted an excuse to get this close to me you could have just asked. I would have said no, but you could have asked." Riley said as she backed away slightly. Hm, she didn't like people in her personal space. She would have to get over that if I was going to win this game.

"Um, I do." I said referring to her first statement.

"What?"

"I do. I do have glasses.. Well I have contacts, but I never wear them. But I also have glasses for when I don't have any contacts available." I explained.

"Where are your glasses then?"

"In my bag."

"Put them on then." She said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"No." I said stubbornly.

"Why not?" She said leaning back in her chair.

"I'll look stupid." It was a lame excuse, but my ego couldn't take wearing my glasses at school.

"I think that ship as sailed buddy." She said pointing to her head. And then I remembered the crown, I guess I already look stupid.

"Fine." I said as I scooted my chair over to my backpack and retrieved my glasses. I reluctantly put them on and turned to face her.

"Oh my god. I can't believe it. You actually fit the smart guy look now." She said smiling slightly.

"Yeah yeah alright let's get back to math." For the next twenty minutes she finished her math homework, tying a few lose ends on some concepts. She really was starting to understand it.

"Well thanks for the help princess Lucas. May I won't end up homeless after all." Riley said as she packed up her stuff into her backpack.

"Maybe. And be sure to tell Claire that everyone loved my outfit today." I said as we walked out of the classroom.

"I will. But really though, thank you so much for helping me with this math I have no idea what I'd do if I had to sit with my math teacher for an hour after school everyday." She said looking up at me.

"No problem. Plus I get to stare at you all the time, which is a bonus for me, you're pretty hot." I said winking at her.

"And he's back." Riley said shaking her head. "Really though, I hope you don't think I'm an ungrateful bitch." She said looking me straight in the eye, quoting my words from Friday night.

"Yeah sorry about that. I can be kind of a dick sometimes." We stopped when we got to her locker.

"Sometimes? You're kidding right?" She said as she spun the dial to get her combination.

"Hey play nice." Riley laughed as she exchanged books.

"Well I guess I'm off to class." She said when she shut the locker. She begun walking away but only made it about ten feet before she turned around, "Oh, and for the record I think your glasses are cute!" She shouted in the nearly empty hallway. Then she turned around and continued walking.

Cute huh? I would take it. And then I realized, I still had my glasses on. Oh well, at least I can finally see. Why did I care about what a bunch of idiots thought anyway?

Then rest of the day flew by but I remembered none of it because all I could think about was the brunette that was terrible at math and refused to let her guard down.
