the devil cries ■ chapter one

I opened my eyes, expecting to see my grey painted walls, but I was quite surprised when I saw not grey but white walls.

I gripped the bed sheets, thinking that I was abducted at some point, but realised that an abductor wouldn't even think of placing the person they abducted in a fine room.

I'm nervous, but I'm trying hard not to show it. What if there were security cameras? What if they're observing me and waiting for the right moment to spill crimson red blood on these white bed sheets?

I shook my head rapidly at the thought. No. I'm only 18, and there's no chance that I'd let some scene from a murder story capture me.

Kassandra, keep calm. You're just dreaming.

Then, after I thought about that, I heard a chuckle from beside me, and I turned my head rapidly to whoever it was while gripping the lamp on the bedside table.

"Who are you?" I asked, silently cursing myself as to why my voice shook.

"The real question here is... who are you, and why are you here?" Asked the man about my age, and I blinked rapidly.

"What do you mean why am I here?" I asked, stepping out of the bed and away from the man.

"Well, you just appeared out of nowhere, so... yeah," he said, and I rolled my eyes.

"First, tell me who you are," I said, and then he smirked at me.

"Are you sure about that?" He asked, with a smirk plastered across his face.

"Well, I wouldn't really ask if I wasn't, would I?" I asked, and then he slowly nodded.

"Just don't be surprised," he said, and then I slowly nodded. "Archangel Azrael, at your service. Angel of Death."

"Wait wait wait, really?! Stop bluffing, asshole," I said, and then he looked at me as if I was crazy.

"How did you manage to get in here, with that foul mouth of yours?" Azrael asked, and then I laughed sarcastically. "What?"

"Stop kidding me. I'm not dead. I'm actually a very strong lady and a healthy one at that. And you? Angel of Death? Who are you joking?" I asked, and continued laughing.

My laugh wasn't genuine, though. My mind starts to tell me that he wasn't joking. My mind tells me that he was telling me the truth and I was only trying hard not to believe it because my mind can't just process the fact that it was true.

"See? You're even thinking about it!" Azrael said, and then I just rolled my eyes.

"Fine. Let's say you're Azrael the Angel of Death—" I said, and then he smiled.

"Archangel, actually," he said with a smile.

"No one cares, now let me continue," I said, and then he shook his head. "You really are an angel? Like... this is heaven?"

"Eh, there's no such thing as heaven. But there's Divine Realm. Just wait for Michael to explain it all to you. He's like the leader of us all, anyway," Azrael said, and I nodded my head. "But tell me about yourself first. Since I told you who I am."

"Okay... I'm Kassandra. Just Kassandra. I don't know my last name. I've always lived alone. And I'm not dead. Certainly not. But I can hear these random voices ever since I could remember hearing. Like, comforting me. Then it would be gone as if it wasn't even there. But I certainly always hear them, though, whenever I needed someone the most. I don't remember my parents' name, just their figures. All I remember is that my mother has long hair, and my father is taller than my mother." I said, stating everything that isn't confidential about me.
