The deputy spent the rest of her day at the Hope County jail, making up stories about what John did to her when people asked. As everyone started heading to bed, Amelia made her way to John's holding cell where the two guards who were previously stood there had retired for the night. She glanced around before slipping into the room, John was still sitting in the chair looking a little tired. He hadn't slept at all considering the uncomfortable position and hadn't had anything to eat or drink.

Amelia frowned a little before walking over to him, pulling her flask of water out of her pocket. "Here, drink something" she ordered and held the flask to his lips. He just smirked and chuckled before taking a drink from the flack. She smiled before returning the flask to her pocket and walking over to the table.

She picked up a switchblade before walking back over to him, he eyed the bladed as she cut his restraints. As soon as he could, John stood him the chair and dusted himself off before rubbing his reddened wrists gently. "Here, take your coat and your gun but please don't shoot anyone unless you literally have no other choice" Amelia told him as she loaded her own handgun.

John smirked, watching her in 'full deputy mode', before walking over to her and wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "John this is serious, they will kill you and me" Amelia sighed, placing her gun down onto the table.

"So we should make our last moments memorable" she could feel him smirking against her neck.

"Or we could get out of this alive and make a lot more memorable moments" Amelia suggested, spinning around to face him and placing her hands on his chest.

"Well, that is tempting" John hummed before leaving a lingering kiss on her lips and pulling away from her.

"Now, take the coat and the gun, and lets get out of here" Amelia smirked as she pushed his coat and handgun into his chest. John chuckled as he took the items, slipping his coat on and loading his gun. "How can you be so calm right now?" she asked, looking at him with a confused expression. She wished that she could feel as sure and relaxed as he looked right now.

"I am calm because I trust you, I have faith in you and I know that you are going to get us out of here" John told her, looking at her with an expression as if he couldn't believe that she asked that question.

"Alright, apparently only the outer wall has anyone patrolling it. We should be able to get out of the jail pretty easy as long as nobody is near the front door. Then when we get to the wall we have to stay against it, use the shadows as a cover. Of course we can't just walk away from the jail, we will have to go through the trees on the left" Amelia spoke, just staring at the door of the holding cell as if she didn't want to open it.

John sensed her hesitation. He both loved and hated seeing her like this. He hated that she had to be 'the deputy' again after he promised her that she wouldn't have to do this again, but he had to admit that it was fascinating to watch her like this. "Amelia, we are going to get out of here. We are going to be fine, and we are going to go home" John assured her as he placed a hand on her shoulder from behind.

Amelia smiled to herself and nodded. John's hand dropped back to his side as Amelia opened the door and peered out into the corridor. When she was sure that the coast was clear, she stepped out of the room followed by John. Amelia led the baptist through the jail, since she had spent the day memorising the layout of the building. Fortunately, most people were sleeping so it was pretty easy to sneak through the less used corridors and abandoned rooms. Amelia was amazed that John was actually managing to keep quiet and let her take the lead in this situation. John knew that Amelia knew what she was doing, that if anyone could get them out of here it was her. Yes, he could be demanding and feels the need to be in control but he wasn't stupid, he knew when to back down and let somebody else take the lead.

They managed to make it to the door, next to the small general store that the resistance set up, without being spotted. Amelia knew that was the easy part, the hard part is actually getting away from the jail. Now they are standing behind the door that would lead them to their freedom, as long as none of the resistance members on duty catch them. "Alright...after we go through this door, we need to stick against the wall in the shadows...just follow me" Amelia told him as she took a deep breath to prepare herself, she was obviously nervous.

"Amelia...you've got this. You have escaped so much worse" John grabbed her shoulders gently and turned her to face him. Amelia nodded but adverted his gaze, still feeling unsure. John smiled a little to himself before leaning down and kissing her, he wrapped one arm around her waist and his other hand held the back of her head. Amelia was taken off guard but kissed him back, holding on to his biceps as if she was scared to let him go. That's when realisation hit John, she wasn't technically scared of getting caught, or even of what they would do to her if they found out that she was helping him...she was afraid of loosing him. That realisation just made John hold her tighter against him. The baptist was still getting used to the fact that somebody other than his siblings actually cared for him, that Amelia could care about him so deeply. After, what felt like, forever but not long enough at the same time, they pulled away from each other.

Amelia was suddenly filled with certainty and motivation. She was going to get them out of here. With more confidence this time, she opened the door and slipped into the shadows with John. Pressing themselves against the wall as they walked around it. Amelia tried her best to get a view of the top of the wall where resistance members were pacing up and down, eventually stopping to scan the area. Amelia grabbed John's hand, her grip tightening as she watched the member of the resistance turn away from them and walk away. John didn't have much time to react before Amelia was pulling him towards the trees, both of them ran, only stopping and hiding among the trees when the deputy knew it was safe to do so.

"Well, we didn't have to use the guns" John commented, tucking his handgun into his pocket.

"Thank God" Amelia sighed, the last thing she wanted to do was shoot somebody who trusted her.

She also tucked her gun into her jacket pocket before beginning to walk away. John walked beside her with a small smile on his face and admiration in his eyes, he didn't admire Amelia for being the deputy...he admired her for being Amelia.

They kept walking until they came to an abandoned pick-up truck at the side of the road. Amelia walked around to the driver's seat and broke the window with her elbow before reaching in and unlocking the door, she climbed into the driver's seat and reached over to open the passenger door. John shook his head as he climbed into the passenger seat. "Of course you know how to steal a car" John mumbled as he shut the door and looked at her focused face. She smiled a little when the engine started.

"Of course I do" she smiled back but John could sense the tension in her body.

Before she could drive off, John placed his hand on hers. "Amelia, look at me" he ordered softly and she sighed before turning her head to look at him. "It's over now, we can just go home. You are not 'the deputy' anymore, you are Amelia" he told her seriously and sincerely, running his thumb over her knuckles.

Amelia let out a breath and smiled, John could almost feel the tension leaving her body. She pulled her hand away from John's before shifting gears and taking the handbrake off.

"Let's go home" Amelia smiled before driving away, towards the ranch. Home.
