Chapter 16

It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.

~Rose Kennedy, upon losing four of her children

John Jr had watched helplessy as one of the shooters fired his single shot at the street. The bullet flew into Governor Conally's head. His head exploded into a mass of bone fragments in blood but that didn't stop him from during the bullet into the man's skull. The other asassin tried to run away but with one sharp quick blow Kara was able to kill him.

They all dropped their guns and got out of there. Luckily no one had been covered in blood but John still tried to not picture Conally's head exploding. Just like Dad, he didn't choke on tears when he thought.

He saw Caroline standing on top of a rock and Rory next to her. Caroline's face was pale when Rory was speaking. John knew what had happened. Conally had been shot in the head.

"We have to get to the hospital," Caroline told him quickly. They nodded and took off down the road.

They caught up to the limo when it screeched to a halt in front of the emergency parking. The door was halfway open. The time travelers stopped and saw a secret service agent pulling a shocked Jack Kennedy out of the car. He was unharmed, but still in shock.

Jackie's pink suit was not covered or soaked in blood. It was clean and pink but Mrs. Conally's dress was the one stained in blood.

Clint Hill's suit was soaked in blood as it had been in John's past life.

"We did it," Kara breathed out. John turned toward her. "We changed history!" She noticed that Johnson was rushed into the hospital. Her smile faded replaced by an angry, furious look.

John had stopped smiling too. He didn't look happy.

The time travelers and President Kennedy were urged into the Hospital. They checked all of them up. It turned out Caroline had brusied her shin while shooting at Oswald but other then that she was fine.

John watched his father wait for an update on Conally. A few minutes later a nurse came out. She had a sad look on her face.

"Mr. President," she began, "I'm sorry but he didn't make it."

John stared at his father. His suntan was now dull. "Thank you," he said hoarsely, "for the update."

President Kennedy turned around as the nurse left. His face was worn and haggard. John checked his watch. It was 1 pm.

It was a joke, John thought. Right now in another life, President Kenendy would be dead, lying lifeless on a hospital bed but in his place was John Conally, the leader of Texas. And instead of Jackie and the Kennedy clan mourning it was Mrs. Conally and her family and friends.

We failed, he thought bitterly, in some point of view, we failed. We didn't want anyone to die but look at what happened. John Conally is dead.

President Kennedy's voice made John jump. He looked at his father startled. The president looked keenly at him.

"Walk with me," he said quietly. John only did cause he didn't remember his father much.

"I know who was behind this," John blurted out. His father stopped in his tracks.

"Who?"

"Would you believe me?"

"It depends on who you think it is," the president said with a grim smile.

"He hates your brother," John corrected him. "He hates Uncle Bobby."

The blood drained from the president's face. John went on, "I'll give you three guesses."

"No!" President Kennedy looked deeply anguished. "It couldn't be Johnson!"

"He doesn't care who he kills," John told him. "Think about it." He walked into the room where the dead John Conally lay. Mrs. Conally was kissing his hand. She looked up as John approached. Her gaze hardened. She knew who he was and why he was here.

"Why did you let this happen?" She asked him hoarsely. Her voice was screechy from crying. "Why did you let him die?"

"Mrs. Conally," he began trying to find a way to fix the sentence. "It wasn't my fault."

She snorted and threw back her head. "Then whose fault was it? You had the power, the wish, to change history but you only made it worse!"

"The president is not dead," John tried to stay calm but his anger was bubbling to the top. "Therefore there will be no Vietnam War."

Mrs. Conally glared at him. Her expression showed anger and pain. She walked out the door.

John sat in her chair and stared at the limp figure of the Texan leader.

"I couldn't save you," John said softly. "I'm so sorry."
