Chapter 2

What would happen if history could be rewritten as casually as erasing a blackboard? Our past would be like the shifting sands at the seashore, constantly blown this way or that by the slightest breeze. History would be constantly changing every time someone spun the dial of a time machine and blundered his or her way into the past. History, as we know it, would be impossible. It would cease to exist.

The past was obdurate, Caroline liked to call it that.

They were standing on a cliff, staring down at the ground below. The cliff was steep and the sun shined above. It glittered and shined like a yellow burnt star. Caroline stared down at the steep hill.

"So..." She began slyly. "Where to first?"

Kathleen was daydreamimg in her own world, gazing down at the trees and the lush grass. She shook her head. She was the oldest, it was up to her. "The White House would be stupid," she admitted. "We can't go there till the time is right." She crumpled up the pair of dollar bills and stuffed them into her pocket. "We need to ask what day it is. The state. Hopefully we are in America. The time and most of all we need to rent an apartment."

Caroline kept her gaze on the ground. "There has to be someone around here." She turned her back on the cliff and walked into the woods. The cool air was welcoming and she cherished it.

"Wait," Kathleen stopped her. "It's dangerous if you go in there. Didn't your mom tell you it's dangerous in a forest?"

"We have to find help!" Caroline was agitated. "We can't be stranded here forever!"

"She has a point," John Jr added. He looked worried. "We find the people in there. If they tell us, we can find a place."

"Are you braindead?" Kathleen spluttered out, her eyes narrowed and her body tensing. "Uncle Teddy told us not to-"

She heard a wrinkle in the forest. Her eyes narrowed. Caroline and the others had stopped talking.

Caroline's blood ran cold as she felt a pair of eyes staring at her from the shadows. She pushed Kathleen gently. The 23 year old turned around to see the pair of icy blue eyes staring at them.

"Don't be alarmed," Max growled. "'Maybe it's-"

There was the crack of a bullet followed by a shierk. Caroline turned around when the figure clipped her by punching her right in the face. She yelled in pain as she felt warm blood dripping down her face. Kathleen bolted for the trees, Rory and the others on her trail. Caroline dashed after them, scared to death and the people were screaming behind.

Caroline turned her head for a brief moment and her heart shattered as she saw the white robes, the white masks and the white everything on the people's body. She tripped over a broken branch and it sent her sprawling. John helped her up and together they raced for the others.

Caroline and the others dashed out of the forest. She was breathing hard. Sweat was running down her face. They stared down at the cliff. Hyaniss Port Massachutes, Caroline thought.

"Well." Rory was standing over the edge. "At least we know where we are."

Kathleen was angry. "We led those strangers right to us!" She glared hard. Rory was confused.

"Hey!"

Rory turned her head. A woman wearing pure white clothing stood there with a gun, aiming it at their chests. Caroline froze, the blood draining from her tanned sunburnt face.

"You!" The woman screamed. "Civil Rights scum!" She rushed forward, reading to use it as a club. Caroline cringed, her stance turning low to protect Rory.

The woman was suddenly screaming in a pool of her own blood. Caroline opened her eyes and saw secret service agents standing there. One of them had a smoking gun in his hand.

The blood drained from Caroline's face. She knew him, the agent had protected them through times of crisis.

The agent was Clint Hill.
