perfection and polaroids.

third person's point of view

after coming home from a long day of work, mackenzie went straight to one thing that she could always count on, her bed.

she sighed after she grabbed the polaroid that laid facing down on her bedside table. after taking a quick glimpse of it, she recalled why she never wanted to see it again. it was a photo of her and her ex-boyfriend.

the photo was taken in mid-october and in it, they were seated on a couch, snuggling up close together. his arm was placed around her shoulders and her head rested comfortably on his chest as they smiled at one another. you were able to tell how genuinely happy they were.

tears pricked at mackenzie's eyes as she released yet another heavy sigh. despite the fact that she didn't want to admit it, she really missed him.

fortunately, they didn't end on bad terms. she was actually the one who ended the relationship. although it happened months ago, she remembers that day like it was yesterday...

"we need to talk" mackenzie said to the laptop screen in which her boyfriend was behind. his smile slowly began to fade.

the boy raised an eyebrow at her. "about us?"

mackenzie nodded. "i don't think i can do this long distance thing anymore"

"are you saying it's over?" his voice cracked as he spoke. he truly loved mackenzie and would do anything to make her happy. "i-i can make my way over to los angeles right now or find a way to change to my schedule to make more time for us."

mackenzie didn't want to hurt him. she only wanted to do what she thought was right without even considering how selfish of her that was. "there is no more us"

"please. i love you so much kenz", the boy attempted to hold back his tears but failed as a few began to roll down his cheeks.

"goodbye" mackenzie whispered before ending the facetime call. she couldn't bear to see him cry. the sad look on his face, was enough to bring mackenzie to tears. she rolled on her side and proceeded to let out heart-wretching sobs.

she finally knew how it felt to be so alone and unhappy...

thinking back on that day caused a few tears to slip from mackenzie's eyes, but she frantically wiped them off as soon as she heard her doorbell ring.

before answering the door, mackenzie went into her closet to grab a bat the was spiked with nails around it. her uncle steve had given it to her once she moved out of her parent's house.

"w-who is it?" she stuttered

"it's me". mackenzie could instantly tell that voice apart from anyone's. it was him.

she set the bat against the wall and slowly opened the door. "johnny?"

he embraced her into a hug and they stayed that way for a few moments. she missed the feeling of being in his arms, where she felt safe and protected.

"i missed you" he whispered into her ear.

"i missed you too" she said before she reluctantly pulled away from their hug. "but why are you here?" she closed the door and allowed him to follow her to her living room where they took a seat on her couch.

"happy valentine's day" he shyly handed her a bouquet of red roses, her favorites. mackenzie gasped. she had forgotten that it was valentine's day, the occasion as she used to call 'the best day in the world' solely because it was the day he had first asked her out, five years ago

"john i-i don't know what to say. thank you can't be enough" she took the flowers and placed them in an empty vase on the coffee table.

"don't worry i don't expect anything more other than just being here with you" he smiled at her as he intertwined their fingers.

"but johnny, we can't do this. remember?" she moved her hand away from his causing johnny to frown. "you live in toronto and i live in los angeles"

"and that is exactly why i'm moving to los angeles. both lauren and i" mackenzie remebered how much lauren meant to her. she meant just as much to mackenzie as johnny did. unfortunately, the break-up put a strain on their friendship.

"really?" johnny noticed that her eyes seemed to glimmer with hope.

"really." he placed his hand on top of hers and this time, she didn't remove it.

instead, she cuddled up close to him and they fell into the position that they were photographed in. his arm snaked around her shoulders as she leaned into his chest, listening to his heartbeat. they sat in comfortable silence before dozing off into a peaceful sleep.

her life was back to the way it was. the emptiness she had once felt was now gone. things were going to be perfect again.
