"reoccurring nightmares."

third person point of view.

there she was. standing in the middle of a road, in an abandoned city. kenzie looked around her, feeling lost. wind gusts biting her skin, her hair flying in all directions.

kenzie gripped the sides of her sweater. "hello?" she spoke aloud.

no answer.

"hello? is anyone here?" she whimpered this time. kenzie dared to start walking forward, passing abandoned cars with broken glass, shattered store fronts and trash everywhere.

"is anyone here?" she mumbled. tears were threatening to slip out any second. kenzie started feeling dizzy, seeing a blur. she started screaming and dropped to her knees.

...

kenzie jolted up from her soft bed, panting heavily. she turned on her bedside lamp. kenzie looked at her hands and tried to calm herself down.

"it was just a nightmare, it was just a nightmare." she whispered out of breath.

kenzie usually had these types of nightmares. it was common problem for her. she would usually go to her older sister in the middle of the night and tell her the nightmares that happened.

maddie, her older sister, usually never minded. they would stay awake for the rest of that night until dawn shone.

but tonight, it was just kenzie. her family went to maddie's competition in a different city.

she looked at the time, 3:27 am.

kenzie ran her fingers through her hair, brushing it backwards.

there was no way she was going back to sleep again after that. one of kenzie's biggest fears was isolation. she's always scared that people are going to leave her, leave her to face life on her own.

so, kenzie lets her last braincell take over and call johnny, one of her best friends. he's the only other person (besides her family) to know about the recurring nightmares.

a few beeps later, he picked up. "hello?" his groggily voice spoke from the other end. kenzie took a deep, shaky breath before whimpering into the phone.

"j-john? were you sleeping?" she asked softly. "kenz, it's 3:00 in the morning. what do you think?" he asked clearly annoyed and wanted nothing more to rest at this ungodly hour.

kenzie felt a bit guilty waking up johnny. it wasn't his problem she had these stupid nightmares. "um- i just had a nightmare again... and i cant sleep. i don't wanna be alone." she said in a hushed tone. kenzie swears she was about to go into cardiac arrest.

johnny's tiredness instantly went away. he sat up in his bed. "oh god. hold up, stay on the line okay? i'm coming to your house." johnny said getting out of his bed and pulling on sweats and a shirt.

"okay." she whispered into the phone, almost sure johnny didn't hear it. kenzie waited on her bed, anxiety kicking through her veins. she pulled the covers closer to her body, hoping it would protect her from everything.

...

johnny rushed to the ziegler household as fast as his legs could carry him. he knew about the nightmares kenzie would constantly have. he always wishes he could help in someway, and now here's his chance.

johnny approached at the door and quickly took the spare key under the mat. johnny's shaking hands unlocked the door. he ran into the house, and up the stairs into kenzies room.

he lightly knocked on the door before opening it. there kenzie was, shaking, staring into the abyss.

"kenzie? you okay?"johnny said closing the door behind him and walking over to the frightened girl.

kenzie looked up at him with begging eyes. eyes begging for mercy.

"oh kenzie." he said before sliding into the bed next to her. kenzie leaned into his warmth and nuzzled her head into the crook of johnny's neck.

johnny wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulders. he drew patterns with his finger on to her exposed arm, in hopes of making her feel better.

"thank you." kenzie breathed.

"don't worry about it, kenz." johnny kissed the top of kenzies head.

the two feel asleep, in the warmth of each other's touch.

kenzie think she finally found the cure for her nightmares, and it all had to do with a boy.
