"voicemails."

"you have reached the voice mailbox of mackenzie please leave a message at the tone"
*beep*
johnny cleared his throat and began to speak. "h-hi mackenzie. it's me, johnny and i'm calling you once again to let you know how much i miss you. p-please call back when you get the chance."
it had been his 167th time calling her within a week and johnny was desperate to hear her voice once more. it had also been a month since they last spoke but johnny wasn't ready to give up on her just yet.
but mackenzie was indeed trying to get rid of him. she never had the heart to tell him that she already had a boyfriend.
but she could still remember it all. those endless nights of them having long conversations on the phone, picnics in the midst of the cherry blossom trees, the feeling of the sand underneath their feet as they relaxed on the beach, the smell of the roses he had always brought for her, but most importantly, the taste of his lips on hers.
"is everything okay babe?" mackenzie thoughts were wiped away as she turned her head to look at the face of the very concerned blonde, mark thomas.
"yeah, everything is fine. i-i just need to go to the bathroom" she told him before getting up from her seat on the couch
"i'll pause the movie for you", he called out to her and she nodded as if he could see her behind the bathroom door.
mackenzie sat on the toilet seat and pulled out her phone. there was a voicemail notification from johnny. she sighed as her finger shakily hovered over the delete button.
she hadn't listen to a single voicemail or read a single text from him. all she did was press delete without hesitation. she had thought about blocking his number maybe once or twice, but she never had the guts to do it.
but she couldn't do it. no, not again. she could not delete this voicemail.
as pressed the phone to her ear, she listened as he spoke. she never realized how much she missed his voice until that moment. and hearing his voice made her do the inevitable, she called him.
she waited as it rung three times before he picked up.
"hello?" johnny attempted to cover the excitement in his voice. he didn't want to sound desperate which was ironic since he had called her 167 times in a week.
mackenzie's voice was hitched in her throat. she didn't know what to say. after all, they hadn't spoke in a month. he didn't even know a thing about her and mark. needless to say, mackenzie was afraid.
she was afraid of rejection once she mustered up the courage to tell him the full story.
"kenzie?" he questioned after a moment of silence. mackenzie opened up her mouth to say something, but no words came out. and after deciding that it was for the best, johnny was the one to hang up.
"i'm sorry" she whispered before pulling her phone away from her ear and staring at the black screen that plastered the words 'call ended'.
maybe things between them weren't meant to be. after all, it was only a summer fling
meanwhile, johnny was ready for confrontation. after pulling on his jacket, he walked outside of his apartment and headed to his car.
as he drove, he thought about the summer he spent with her. he was hoping that things would go back to how they were during that time. but he couldn't always get what he wished for.
his nervousness increased as he pulled up to her apartment complex. as he walked up to her door, he began telling himself things such as everything would be okay and that he had nothing to worry about.
but as neared her apartment, the door swung open to reveal a boy he wasn't quite familiar with. the nameless boy's face was red with anger. johnny hid behind a wall as soon as mackenzie came into view. johnny watched as they yelled at one another.
"you cheated on me with her mark! how am i supposed to forgive you" mackenzie yelled
"i told you already babe, nadia means nothing to me" johnny thought it was ironic, he had dated a girl named nadia turner for three months before meeting mackenzie.
"don't call me babe. i made it clear that we're over!"
"whatever" mark scoffed. "don't think i don't know about that stupid boy who's been calling your phone for a goddamn month. you must've been sleeping with him all summer when i went away for vacation"
"bye!" mackenzie screamed as she slammed the door in mark's face. angrily, he walked past johnny without a clue who he was, and left.
the entire situation was now clear to johnny. mackenzie hadn't been answering his phone calls since summer ended since she had cheated on mark with him. johnny's body had been filled with anger now that he knew he had been played.
instead of leaving, johnny decided to give mackenzie a piece of his mind. he came out from hiding behind the wall and walked to her door. he knocked three times before she opened the door.
"mark i said-" mackenzie's sentence was cut short when she saw his face. "johnny? you saw what happen?" he nodded his head
johnny was prepared to scream at her and rant about how he felt before he took a look at the girl that stood in front of him. his face softened as tears continued to fall down her face. and without thinking twice, he pulled her into a hug.
"i'm sorry johnny. i should've told you. it-it's just mark's such an awful person and i just n-needed a distraction and w-what i d-did was horrible. i'm so sorry" she sobbed
"it's okay kenz, it's okay" he whispered to her.
and now that they had each other by their side, for good this time, it was going to be okay.
