Chapter 19
It
It. That word. The word we've been using for the mysterious being lurking in the shadows... I pant as I crawl further away from my attacker. The clearing I'm standing in tainted with blood, I sink to the ground in pain. Sasori doesn't even know I'm out here, goddamn it! Even if I've figured out what the strange beast is, I fear that it may never be of use. Am I destined to die here? All I had wanted was to fetch some water from the river, but it's the first time one of us has strayed far without the other.
I hear a crunching of twigs and leaves to my left as the trees part to reveal the bear. The bear that suddenly attacked. I'd foolishly brought no means of defense along with me... I snarls at me as I clutch my bleeding leg... The bear had bitten off half of my calf...
The pain is unbearable and I grunt in agony, my crimson blood staining the earth beneath me. Sasori will think I'm by the river, how will he know I'm all the way out here, half a mile in the opposite direction? Damn... The bear approaches further, and all I can do is shut my eyes tightly, willing it to all be over soon...
Then, I hear a yelp. And a scream of anger. Thump. I open my eyes to see Sasori, standing above the beast, holding his arms out, his chakra strings attached to some poisonous darts. Big darts. "S-Sasori..." I say, as he rushed over to me. "I-I wasn't prepared... I'm an idoit..." I hoss and he wraps his shirt around my leg. "Shhh... I heard you scream so I came running..." I wince again as he picks me up. "Well at least we've got him taken care of..." Sasori says as I wraps my arms around his neck, tears threatening to flow from the pain... "M-My leg... What are we-" "Shh... We'll deal with the long term later, right now you need to get cleaned up..." I nod, grimacing with every step he takes. "Okay..."
When we get back to our cabin, he changes my clothes and painfully tends to my leg. Luckily, in the akatsuki we were all trained for his kind of stuff, so he moves with surgical-like precise ness, cleaning and wrapping my leg. As I sit on the bed, my leg throbbing, Sasori finishes and sits down next to me. "S-Sasori..." "I know..." I sigh. This changes everything... I won't be as able bodied as I once was, I won't be able to do the things I used to... I can't train, I can't take those long walks we sometimes have in the forest, I can't stand beside him as an equal... I've become impaired by the hands of a beast, and there's nothing we can do.
"The healing process will take awhile... I'm..." He looks down. "I'm so damn sorry..." His voice is shaking. "I should've been able to protect you! I mean, it just seems like its one thing after another... It seems like we'll never be at peace for longer than a year..." I reach for his hand. "Listen to me." He looks down into my eyes. "Danna..." I give him a weak smile. "Yes, things will be different. Yes, it does seems as though we'll never be able to be at peace... But it is absolutely not your fault, baby..."
He scoots a little closer. "How do you feel?" He asks, caressing my face. "Well, my leg was just bit in half, so that part hurts like hell, but hey, I've had my arms blown and chopped off, so I think ilk manage." I smile for real this time, gaining more hope that things will be alright. "Yeah, but each time we had Kakuzu to sew your arm back on..." I sigh. "Nevertheless, I'll be alright... After all, I've got you."
