Chapter 23

And then there was one

Two weeks go by.

Sadness plagues our every move.

"The sky's cloudy, be carefull..." I solemnly say as he walks to the door, opening it. Through the screen door one can see the sky is overcast. He looks back at me. Dry lightning cracks across the sky. "I'll be okay." He says reassuringly. He opens the screen door and steps onto the porch as the wood beneath him creaks with his steps. "Write to me, if you can." He nods, avoiding my gaze. "Hey, look at me." I command, stepping out into the cool air. His eyes are full of fear. "Oh, Sasori..." I embrace him. "I'm going to miss you." My words are muffled through his shoulder. "And I you."

His strong arms wrap around me. "What am I going to do?" I suddenly hear him sniff as he pulls me closer, his body racking with sobs. "I-I don't know..." I begin to foolishly cry as well. There's nothing we can do.

His kiss is as before.

Soft.

Sweet.

Desperate.

Passionate.

Loving.

Short.

"Please don't go."

"I have to."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

"Why?"

"I've been a fool."

"How so?"

"I don't know."

"Well don't become one. Stay strong for me."

"I will."

"Please come back."

"I will"

I watch him walk to the line of trees.

He stops, turns around.

He mouths, 'I love you'

I do, too.

'I love you, I will wait for you!"

He walks.
