Luna POV
"Are you sure this is the correct address?" I spoke to Mia, while getting out of the taxi. "this looks like a million bucks..... are you sure we can afford it?" my sarcastic whisper might have been a little too loud that people coming out of the building stared while I struggled to get my luggage out of the trunk.
"Don't be ridiculous Luna!" my best friend threw me a look that screamed 'keep your mouth shut'. Mia exhaled and walked towards me in a calm but predictable manner. She was so done with my complaining in the taxi for the past half hour. "Look... this place is comfortable and cheaper than any other place we ever looked. You know how difficult it is to get an affordable place nowadays. Stop whining or otherwise they might kick us out."
"Let them try!" my coarse voice echoed as I shook my head and ignored the disappointed look Mia was giving. I hate moving. I hate that I had to leave our house and move into this cramped up place in the city, but it was bound to happen. I shouldn't have raised my expectations. I loved the place. It was near the beach and every dawn I would go and walk along the shore, maybe jog if I was in the mood to. The backyard had a wonderful little garden with a swing set. I loved reading there, but all of that changed one frightful morning. It wasn't our house after all.
I was brought back to reality by the sound of cars honking. I could hear Mia shouting to hurry and I took the last of my suitcase from the trunk and followed her in. As we walked inside the building it was not as I had expected. Instead of the gloomy and bad paint job, the interior of the lobby had art displayed on its walls and a plant can be seen every now and then. We took our suitcases and got into the lift. "Fourth" was all Mia had to say as I pressed the number 4 and waited patiently for it to close.
With the ping sound the lift door opened to the fourth floor and I could see apartments 4A and 4B written on the doors. As we stepped out Mia took the keys from her jacket pocket and unlocked apartment 4B. As we stepped inside I knew Mia made the right choice by renting this place. Oh she knew me so well. It had just the right amount of space for a living room and a medium sized kitchen for the two of us to use without bumping into each other every five seconds. Mia kept staring at me as I scanned the place taking in every little detail into my brain. The kitchen had a counter for dining along with a coffee maker.
Past the kitchen, I walked along the corridor, and saw three doors. I looked at Mia and asked "so which ones mine?". "the righ......." I did not wait for her answer as I opened the door to my right and went in. It had a double bed with a tiny closet and a table at the corner. I was happy. I turned to face Mia and before she could say anything I crashed into her chest and gave her a long, tight hug. "Oh you know me so well. I'm so sorry for complaining earlier" I spoke in between sobs. "I love it here. This is just what we needed".
It is true. Even though we don't have the same blood running through our veins, she was like a sister to me. We have known each other for over 7 years and have lived together for the last 3. She felt more like family to me than my own parents. We are always there for each other, supporting and helping no matter what. She understood me better than anyone else. She acted the role of the one I needed. A mother at times, a sister and a friend.
" There there. Stop crying Luna" she spoke slowly while rubbing my back. "We have a lot to unpack so let's get started, shall we?" I moved away from her and smiled as she wiped my tears away. As we walked towards the living room, I peeked into Mia's room and saw that it was identical to mine. It was when I got into the living for the second time that day that I noticed all the boxes piled neatly in front of a large glass door. "That's the balcony" Mia spoke noticing my gaze.
I sat down to unpack a box with kitchen written on the side with my neat handwriting. I tied my peach blonde hair in a bun, knowing it was going to be a long day of unpacking and organizing. After 6 long hours of unpacking, I settled into the couch with a slice of pizza. As I looked around the apartment I felt content with what we have accomplished. All the appliances were in their places, furniture has been rearranged, the closets are full and the place looked newly polished. I went to bed that night and hoped that this fresh new beginning will be a good thing for the both of us. We needed this. We deserved this.
Little did I know of the storm that was going to unleash upon us soon.
