About 30 minutes after Jay left, Mia and her grandparents came back from the graveyard. I told her what happened with Jay and she expressed disappointment but said she understands if it was an emergency. As we all sat at the dinner table, I could not help but check my phone every few minutes to see if Jay has sent a text. I hoped he reached wherever he was going safely.
Mama Grace put her hand over mine and asked, "Is anything wrong Luna? You keep checking your phone."
"Ah no. it's nothing" I shrugged it off not wanting to worry her.
"Okay then will you go and get out the cake. It's almost time for dessert." I nodded, getting up and going into the kitchen. When I brought out the cake, I could not help but smile, watching Mia clap her hands excited like a 6 year old. She blew out the candles and we all enjoyed the cake. Everyone said the cake tasted good and I felt proud of my baking skills.
After dinner, we moved to the living room to open the presents. I started going up the stairs when Mia pulled me back, "Where do you think you are going woman?"
"Ah. My gift for you is back home Mia. Go spend some alone time with your family. Besides I am beat so gonna take a shower and glue myself to bed."
"Lunaaaa. You are a part of our family too." She hugged me after that.
"Ugh Mia, that's too sweet eww I feel like throwing up" I held her back at arm's length as she laughed at my words, "Now go on" I turned her around and pushed her forward before yelling a good night and climbing up the stairs.
As soon as I walked into Mia's room, I shut the door and took out my phone. I hesitated for a second before dialing Jay and bringing the phone to my ears. When he did not pick up I called again but this time it was switched off. I tried a couple of times more in vain.
Thoughts started pooling in my mind. Maybe he needed time to deal with whatever emergency it was. Maybe he wanted some space. Maybe he did not want to ..... nah that can't be it. He's just busy. He will text soon to let us know he's alive, when he gets time.
I decided to let him be because he clearly did not want anyone to disturb him. As I lay in bed that night I wondered why I was suddenly so anxious about someone else. I barely knew Jay. We have been friends for only a few weeks and yet why do I feel like this. I felt sad that he had not replied to me, that he had not picked up the phone.
Sleep was no friend to me as I tossed and turned on the bed. I closed my eyes and started wandering my mind, imagining of storylines that were impossible. It always gave me a euphoric sense that felt beyond this world. It helped me sleep.
I woke up the next morning feeling groggy from sleeping so late. We all had breakfast and we headed out to catch the next metro back home. Mama Grace gave us cookies and cakes to take back home. The atmosphere was really gloomy as we had to leave only after a day but the weekend was over. There was no way we could stay back. Mia has to go back to work the next morning.
When we reached home, Mia dropped her bags near the door and plopped onto the couch.
"Hey.... Take your things and go sleep in your bed" I told her as I made my way to my bedroom.
"CAN'T.. too tired from last night" Mia's voice came muffled as he face was buried into the couch cushion, "We stayed up playing board games and I slept for only an hour".
I spoke looking at my watch, "Well have lunch and then go to sleep"
"Leave me alone" Mia whined and turned her head away from me.
I let out a tiny chuckle before checking the fridge for any ingredients I can use to cook lunch. Unfortunately we were out of groceries.
"Mia. I am going to go to get groceries and get a sandwich on my way back. Do you want one?", I said grabbing my wallet.
"Ye whateverrr..." Mia must have been really tired.
As I opened the door I thought about Jay. He must be home by now. "Mia, do you think Jay is home? Would he want a sandwich since he likes them?....... Mia?" I turned around when she didn't answer the first time to see that she was totally passed out on the couch with her arm and leg dangling out. I shook my head before locking the apartment.
The walk to the store was short but it was so crowded. I knew I had to be strategic if I wanted to survive out of this in one piece. I adjusted my hoodie, took out my phone and changed it to my workout playlist. I moved my body side to side to see how muscles were. YES! I was ready. I charged my way along the aisles, dodging the pregnant lady with the 5-year old boy and made my way to the cereal section. I scanned the shelves looking for my favorite kind.
"Aha" I almost screamed as I saw one last box of it on the farthest shelf from left.
"You shall be mine" I must look like a crazy person mumbling to myself as I made my way and reached to grab the box. As I watched my hands moving towards it, out of the corner of my eyes I saw another hand reach for the same box. I turned to my left, wanting to see the person who was trying to steal my lifeline. My eyes flew wide open as I saw who it was.
