Your memory in waking life is important to lucid dreaming. The reason for this is that, when you're dreaming, you often can't recall what got you to where your dream started. If you can think back through the events of the day every so often, you should be able to remember a few details from, say, that morning. For example, I can remember that I had muffins for breakfast. You don't have to remember everything, but if you can't remember anything, that's when it's time to do a reality check.
