Nanami felt her heart race when Aiyanna read out the names. It was her turn, and after the last one, she was eager to fight.
As she turned towards the steps, a hand grabbed her arm painfully and pulled her back.
"Nanami, drop out," Neji ordered.
His heart was racing. He was scared.
"In the immortal words of Aki," Aiyanna snapped, slapping his hand off her. "Ain't nobody talk to my girl Nanami like that."
"This has nothing to do with you," Neji snapped.
"Actually, it does," Aiyanna snapped back. Nanami touched her friend's arm calmly, and she sensed Tsukiko-sensei do the same.
"Brother, I don't intend to back down from this challenge," she answered. "I know you don't believe I can do this, but I can. Please. Trust me."
Neji was quiet, and she could sense his frustration. "If you lose this fight, you will withdraw from being a ninja permanently."
"The hell!?" Aiyanna cried, only for Nanami to silence her with one raised hand.
"It's alright, Aiyanna," Nanami said calmly, turning back to the stairs. "I don't plan on losing."
