Chapter 25
Cara
“Keith, slow down! We have all day!”
“I’m really not going that fast babe.”
“You’re going 90 on a 75 zone with your pregnant fiancé in the car!”
“Alright, fine. I don’t see what the big deal is.”
“There are people trying to follow us home you know. Have a little consideration.” I say. He rolls his eyes and starts to slow down. We were on our way to the house. We took the Porsche and Ava took the new car. It wasn’t a long drive, but, I was so hungry and I was really craving fries. Once we got on the exit, I told Keith to pull into KFC so we could get food for everyone. I texted Ava to let her know that Keith and I were making a quick stop. Right after I sent the message I get a call from my dad. I was reluctant to answer but Keith persuaded me to.
“Hi.”
“Hello Cara. How are you feeling?”
“Fine.” I answered sharply.
“I trust the shower went well?”
“You would know if you came.” I snapped. Keith shot me a look and I rolled my eyes.
“Isn’t it a women only thing?” He says mockingly.
“No necessarily. It depends on what the person who’s having the shower thinks. It’s not a bachelorette party Dad.” I say.
“Look, Lemon cake. I do love you, and I just want what’s best for you.”
“So you scheme up a plan to ship the whole family out to Arizona!? What did you think I would just agree and go? You might have thought I would, but I’m 18 now. I can leave. I can move out with Keith and start my family. And that’s exactly what I plan on doing.”
“I just hate that you’re pregnant at such a young age!”
“Well that’s just how it is now. Deal with it. You’d have to deal with it anyway if I’d agree with you in the first place. I’d still be pregnant in Arizona!”
“I don’t want you with that Kevin boy Cara, that’s all.”
“Kevin!? Who the hell is Kevin!? His name is Keith. And if I remember correctly, you two were getting along just great. Remember that fishing trip?”
“That was ages ago! It’s September now. And that was way before I found out he was the man who impregnated you!”
“That was in June!”
“In June you weren’t pregnant and having a baby! Now you’re having a baby!”
“Mom didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what? She’s been giving me the silent treatment ever since you told her ‘my plan’.
“I’m having twins.” The phone fell silent for a moment. I heard his breathing and looked at Keith. He was mumbling something incoherent.
“What?”
“I said, this is appalling!”
“You know what Dad? Keep it up! You just lost a chance to see your grandchildren’s birth and every other milestone in there lives. And if you think you’re walking me down the isle, forget it-”.
“Marriage? Is that what you’re saying?”
“Yes Dad. I’m engaged.” He hung up then. I threw my phone against the dashboard and yelled.
“Hey calm down! I’m driving here. We could get into a serious accident like that.” Keith whined. I sighed and threw my head back against the seat. We pulled up into the KFC parking space. Keith got out and opened my door. We walked into the restaurant and waited in line. A girl came in behind us and smiled at me. She continued to smile while she stared which was very annoying. I was already in a bad mood and didn’t need some random lady to teach me good morals. Then I realized she wasn’t staring at me, she was staring at Keith! And not the ‘trying to cover it up’ kind, but more like the really creepy, stalker-ish ‘have we met’ kind. Keith was so oblivious. He just continued to squint up at the menu and kept asking me what I wanted.
