"Rose?" I shiver at the cold hand touching my back. "Rose. I'm hungry. Wake up." My sister's voice woke me up. I slowly get up rubbing my sleepy eyes and look at the cracked clock on the rough wall. Nine o'clock in the morning? Well, that's fair enough. Glancing again at my sister I see her holding her growling stomach.
"Come on. Get dressed and let's go." I gently rub her back kissing the top of her head. Moments later we open the door and step outside where the sun it's greeting us with its warmth, heading to work.
For years now I've been working at the Purple Moon bar. It's an old place full of middle aged people and also old people. A place where most of them come to drawn their own sorrow with a couple of drinks and the performances that we offer. Most of the times I feel sorry for the things that are happening in their lives, but then again, I wouldn't blame them cause I don't have a perfect life either.
As terrible as this place may sound, it's actually not that bad. I take it as a blessing being able to work here, since it's the only place I could find close to the apartment that my sister and I live in. A car would be in handy, but my pockets are just as empty as the fridge back home is.
As we are getting close to the building, I smile remembering the events from last night. It's so stupid now that I think about it but thats what makes it so funny.
"What's with with that smile?" My sister Emma, asks tagging at my side.
"Nothing." I assure her and she playfully roles her eyes at me, giving me one of those 'yeah-sure' faces.
"Well, good morning Rose." The usual happy voice rings in my ears as we enter the building and I walk up straight behind the counter to face Mrs. Robinson. We all call her 'big Momma'. Laugh all you want but, she truly is big momma, not only by her size but also by her title. She is the boss and the owner of this bar and ain't nobody, I mean Nobody messing with her. The sad part about this, is that big momma doesn't have a daddy yet. Of course she is still looking for him, but the way every man walks through that door, the same way they exit.
"Morning Big Momma." I smile and start cleaning up the place, preparing it for the costumes that are to come.
"Momma is big, but so is your ass that got in trouble last night." She says and the innocent smile comes on my face as I look at her.
"Well..." I feel the lump in my throat. "What happened was-"
"Listen hon. I don't give one crap about what happened last night. Just don't let it happen again, okay?" She cuts me off and places her hand on my shoulder.
I let a breath that I was holding in and smile. "I promise."
"Trust me, I don't enjoy having Mrs. Larissa talking to me about things that ain't nobody got time for." She says smacking those lips and moving those hands all over the place. I giggle.
Now you get why I love her so much.
Since it's really early in the morning there aren't so many but just a few people. I go grab our breakfast from the kitchen and come back with it sitting down next to my sister. One part of our agreements for me working here was that my sister and I could eat peacefully before I start work. Big Momma knows our situation and how we live, so she lets us have breakfast for free.
When people are fired for a new job, they usually have only one job such as being a waitress, or the mob person and so on. I have more than one job. I'm more of a 'all-in-one' type of person here. Most of the time when I get to the end of the day, I am exhausted and out of energy to even move my legs. The sad part behind all this is that the payment is not as high as the work I put into this job.
