"Wake up," I whisper into his ear while stroking the back of my hand against his cheek.
After three seconds, his eyes begin to flutter until they open fully and he stares at me in a sleepy haze. "What..." he struggles to form his words. "What happened?"
I continue to trail my fingers along his jawline. "You fell asleep. Missed the entire film – and the Chinese food. I left a little bit for you, though."
Slowly, he eases himself upright and cradles his head. "Jeez, my head is killing me. I feel so lightheaded. I don't remember watching a film or ordering takeaway."
"Well, you were pretty out of it from start to finish so I'm not surprised. The film was good, by the way. If you were wondering."
He inhales a deep breath and shakes his head. "That's good, then."
I grip his hand and lean in to kiss his cheek. "Come on, I only woke you up so you didn't have to sleep on the sofa. Believe me, that is never a pleasant night."
As I start to pick myself up, he grabs my hand and stops me. "Wait," he demands. I do as he says. "I want to tell you something."
I look at Him, confused and hesitant to comply. "Okay..."
He takes another deep breath and looks down at the floor. "I don't remember my dream from just now, but there's one thing I took away from it." He lifts my hand to his lips and kisses them softly, and looking at me directly in the eye he says, "I love you, Avery."
My heart skips and the butterflies awake. I'm taken back by his words.
"When I saw you in the coffee shop, I was completely blown away by your presence, but I wasn't at all expecting to feel the way I feel. You're the most mesmerising woman I've ever met. You keep me on my toes, I never know what to expect. You're affectionate but you aren't too sensitive. And even though you haven't opened up to me completely, I know that I can love every part of you. I mean it. There is nothing you could say to me that would change how I feel. I love you."
I stare at Him, speechless. Frozen by his words. I can feel the adrenaline tingling up from arms and making my hands shake. Can he really mean that? Can he really love me no matter what? Despite my dark side?
"I..." I clear my throat and swallow the tears threatening to surge into my eyes. "I don't know what to say. No one's ever said that to me before."
He wraps one hand around my neck, pulls me into Him and presses his lips against mine. I fall into the kiss and throw my arms around Him, squeezing him so tight and I never want to let go. For this one moment, the rest of the world is gone. All my problems are gone. For this one moment, I am an ordinary girl, with an ordinary boy who loves me, who accepts me. I want to be here forever.
But forever has to end.
