Let's talk about Avery Blake. When confronted with the topic of serial killers, most people will instinctively say "there must be something wrong with them. They must be crazy." Well, for some cases this is true. Although there is no agreed upon definition for insanity, the one used in court is that the person is unaware of the illegality of their actions. Avery Blake does not fit this profile.

Most people are so sure that there is some twisted reason that a serial killer is a serial killer. Like Harry, we can understand why he killed those people. Because he thought he had to. But Avery? She's more difficult to understand. How can someone kill without a reason? Without a purpose? Well, why not? Just because it isn't something you don't do, doesn't mean it's not possible - and it doesn't mean they're crazy.

Everyone has their hobbies. Some people love horse-riding or parkour. Some people hate it. Some people love golf or snooker. Some people don't. So why can't killing be a hobby? Sure, it's not the norm, but it's possible and it does happen.

Now it doesn't mean that these people can't feel. Avery is not a psychopath - but she does have psychopathic tendencies. But guess what? Everyone does. It's actually an evolutionary advantage, since you are more able to be objective and decide what is the best way for you to survive. Plus, it's believed that most successful businessmen have strong psychopathic tendencies. Would you call businessmen crazy? Would you say businessmen are unable to feel, to love? Psychopaths do not have empathy. But this doesn't mean they don't feel. And if we all have psychopathic tendencies then is it not the normal?

The dictionary definition of insanity is being "in a state of mind that prevents normal perception." If this is true, surely we are "insane" when we are hungry. When we are tired. When we're in love. So if we're all insane at some point, then is anyone really insane? If anything, when Avery kills she is in the soundest state of mind she can be in.
