"Avery," my boss calls as I walk through the door after my lunch break. He approaches me. "Someone dropped a present off for you. I left it on your desk."

I frown at him. "Who was it?"

He shrugs. "It was just left by the door with a note saying 'I look forward to seeing you tonight'. I didn't see who it was. Hey, you didn't tell me it was your birthday."

"Didn't I? I must've forgot." I smile back at him while trying to subtly exit the conversation.

"Well, happy birthday anyway." He gives me a wide grin and then walks off in the other direction.

I skip over to my desk, excited to see what gift he left for me. I am meeting his friends tonight – I hope it's something to calm my nerves.

Ripping the champagne-coloured paper off the cardboard box, I make sure I'm not looking too enthusiastic over a birthday present at my age.

I lift the lid and as soon as the sun's rays reveal what's inside, I slam it shut again and my hands begin to shake. To my disappointment, it isn't from Him.

After scooping the box into my arms, I casually hurry out of the office and into the ladies' toilet. Once I am in a locked stall, I reopen the box.

There, in a bed of Happy Birthday confetti, is a knife. There doesn't seem to be anything too special about the knife – it's just a standard kitchen knife. However, the thing that scares me is that it is in a zip-lock plastic bag. With Southhurst Police Department in the top right-hand corner.

I rummage through the confetti and sure enough I find a letter at the very bottom.

Happy Birthday dear friend. I hope you enjoy my gift. I can't wait to see you later. I may be a little late to the celebration, but I'll be sure not to miss the cake.
