They are better today – they are feeling less guilty about it all. Harry is relieved by this, he really didn't want to lose them now.
"Hey, Karen," Harry says as he walks through the station doors. "Have we had any more contact from GR?"
Karen glances down, biting her lip. "No, I don't think so. I'll keep an eye on it, though."
"Okay." Harry returns and heads to James's office.
Karen smiles as he goes past. Since that Christian Grey paid a visit, she has gradually grown in confidence. Harry has noticed that she is holding her head higher now, rather than always looking down. She has more of a brightness to her face, as before she always seemed dull and low. Although he didn't go far to help the investigation, at least he did some good for Karen.
"Hey." Harry grabs James's attention as he approaches his office. "I just went to the evidence locker. The knife is gone."
That certainly does get James's attention. "What knife?"
"The one from the Sleeping Beauty murder. I can't find it anywhere."
James sighs, biting the inside of his cheek. "How strange. I checked Monday morning when I put the hair we found in there and everything seemed to be accounted for. Let me go have a look."
Once he has left the room, Harry approaches the board and studies its content. Since the beginning of this week, they have been looking back over the Goldilocks case and trying to see how it links in. They haven't gotten very far with it, though. They've looked for holes in the investigation, key points ignored, statements lost over the years...but they've come up with nothing. Everything seems to be in perfect order. That's no surprise, though, since James was one of the main detectives working on the case.
As for the son? James still thinks he is somewhere far away, living his life as well as he can, trying to move on from the tragedy. That's how Harry wants it to stay.
A few minutes later, James returns with a stern look on his face. "I can't find it either. It can't have just disappeared."
Harry shrugs. "Well, we found some of the prints on the knife, didn't we? Maybe GR is trying to cover their tracks."
James nods, but he doesn't seem convinced. "Hmm, if that's the case it's a bit late now, isn't it? We've already put the prints from the knife onto the system. He's escaped us for so long, he must know the system well enough to know that." He joins Harry, staring at the board. "None of this is adding up. The Goldilocks case...the drawings...the letter and call...now the knife has gone missing? None of this is making sense."
"Maybe when we get the street CCTV we can get a clearer picture," Harry suggests.
James doesn't reply. Both of them remain silent, pondering the scattered information, trying and failing to make sense of it all.
Harry agrees – none of it is adding up. But Harry doesn't think they are done taunting them, yet. Harry knows there is more to come.
