(Okay, HERE'S the happy oneshot.)
Gene was afraid he wouldn't make it.
Every day that he wasn't adopted he got closer and closer to being put down. It was a cruel rule that the owners of these pet stores had. If a pet, whether it be animal or hybrid, wasn't adopted in a certain amount of time they would be put down. Gene was smart enough to know what "put down" meant, all the hybrids were smart enough to know that. Except the fish ones, they were idiots. "Put down" meant killed, either because they were sick or old, or because "no one wanted them", as the humans said.
Gene watched as his brother played with the chew toy that the humans had given them. He knew that Dante was the only reason he had kept his sanity this long, and why he had been allowed to live this long.
He glanced at the door to their shared cage, seeing one the human workers of the pet shop approaching them. They kneeled down and unlocked the cage, opening it and giving both of them a warm smile. They reached in and stroked Dante's head, making sure they didn't do anything to set Gene off.
"Today's your lucky day, you two." The worker said, lifting Dante up. "You're getting adopted!"
Gene growled lowly as they picked up Dante, but then realized what they had said. They were getting adopted? Or was that a way of sugarcoating the news of their death? Gene made his way over to the worker and his brother, picking up the chew toy Dante had dropped.
"Don't worry, you were both adopted by the same person." The worker promised them, leading them to their carriers.
Gene still had his suspicions, but he didn't say anything as he and his brother were put into carriers and loaded onto a vehicle. He didn't say anything at all.

"Gene...."
Gene looked behind him as his name was said, and saw his owner approaching him. He had been the pet of Zane Ro'Meave for two years now, and he had never been so respectfully treated before in his life. Zane treated him like he was a human being.
"Yeah Zane?" Gene used his master's real name, since Zane had insisted on it.
"You're always out here... is something bothering you?" Zane asked, sitting down next to him on the bench.
Gene said nothing, staring at the two other people in the backyard. His younger brother was always being hogged by Zane's younger brother, who was named Vylad. Right now they were playing with a soccer ball, and scaring the neighbor's cat with a cucumber. (I didn't watch that side story yet.)
"You miss spending time with him, don't you?" Zane asked, placing his hand on top of Gene's.
"Of course I do... he's my brother.. don't you ever miss spending time with your brothers?" Gene asked in return, blushing lightly.
"I was never close to them." He answered almost immediately, looking away. "I'm nothing like them."
"Zane.... that doesn't mean anything. I'm nothing like my brother but we get along just fine." He said, leaning back. "So what's the real reason?"
"Alright fine.... it's... it's because they're the reason I almost died, and because of that my parents don't let us hang out very much.." He admitted, crossing his arms.
"Oh.... I didn't know that..." He coughed, clearing his throat.
"You know, Gene.... I had to beg my parents to let me have you." He sighed, looking up at the sky. "They always insisted on my pets being cute and sweet, but when my mom heard that I wanted you.... she, well, almost flipped."
"Then what's my purpose?" He asked, his tail going down as he remembered the animal shelter.
"They agreed to letting me have you as long as you'd be a guard dog, but you... you're so much more to me..." He blushed, slowly facing him again.
"W-What....?" He stuttered, blushing like Zane was.
"I..... I love you!!" Zane cried, hugging him tightly.
"I.... I love you too...." Gene breathed, momentarily stunned by the words.
(Yeah, this was short.
I forgot my original idea.
And any idea that I tried didn't work right.
And I suck at writing happy stuff, you all know this.
So take it.
Take this Dog Hybrid Gene and this Gay Zane.)
