I personally always liked The Originals a little more than The Vampire Diaries. While TVD focused mainly on romance, the storyline to TO was always much darker and more twisted, and I liked that about it. You don't have to watch TVD to watch TO, but I recommend both.
My personal favorite characters from the main cast are Elijah Mikaelson, Freya Mikaelson, Marcel Gerard and Camille O'Connell.
